I am interested in getting a Boston terrier but my wife and I work all day. Are the boston terrier's pack animals? Can they deal with only evening and weekend companion?

If it's any help.. My wife and I have had a Boston terrier for 2 years now. When we lived in new york we both worked long hours during the day at our respective offices. At first he seemed fine, but eventually when he grew more attached to us he started going crazy when we left him. He learned to unlock and open our front door for example. He's not much of a barker but he would also bark for hours after we left. Just from personal experience and what our vet told us, this breed can have severe separation anxiety. He's alright now but still doesn't seem to like being left alone.

It's all in the training! If you socialize them properly and teach them that you'll be returning they are fine with being left alone for longer periods. Start with 5 minutes, then 15, then an hour, then 3, etc and reward them when you return. It's also VERY useful to give them a command when you leave like "watch the house" so that they have a sense of responsibility and are rewarded when they did their job. I have stretches where I have to work late or am away quite a bit and my Boston will show typical signs of separation anxiety like digging in the garbage/plants etc but making sure that they are getting enough exercise everyday clears that right up. BUT, if you think you won't have enough time to spend with him in the evening you might want to reconsider if this is the best time to get a dog.

Yes, but another good idea so they aren't bored. If you have a gate you can put them outside and let them run around. Boston Terriers are great dogs.
