It's all in the training! If you socialize them properly and teach them that you'll be returning they are fine with being left alone for longer periods. Start with 5 minutes, then 15, then an hour, then 3, etc and reward them when you return. It's also VERY useful to give them a command when you leave like "watch the house" so that they have a sense of responsibility and are rewarded when they did their job. I have stretches where I have to work late or am away quite a bit and my Boston will show typical signs of separation anxiety like digging in the garbage/plants etc but making sure that they are getting enough exercise everyday clears that right up. BUT, if you think you won't have enough time to spend with him in the evening you might want to reconsider if this is the best time to get a dog.
