We are planning to adopt a border terrier and are deciding between a male and a female. My husband would like to run with the dog and we have children. Is there a big difference in a male or female's ability to run or temperments?

I don't think there would be a big difference in relation to sex as long as it was neutered. It would be more of a general temperament issue. All BTs have their own individual character but being a terrier bred for hunting many of them cannot be trusted off lead unless the area is secure. I will only let my 14 month old off in a field in the middle of nowhere! Otherwise he is walked on a long-line. They have a high chase instinct and many would think nothing of darting across a busy road after something small and furry!! All of the above could be null and void if you plan to run with the dog on the lead. But just to be aware a BT will have to be trained not to get over-excited and grab at their lead whilst running. Personally my BT will lunge after joggers and cyclists because the movement sets off his hunting instinct! This can take a lot of work to overcome...trust me!! Haha!
