Can you leave a Berner home alone for 7-8 hrs. while working or will they become destructive & unhappy? I will be home for the next year then plan to work while the kids are in school, so the dog would be home alone. We live in Fl.and wondered if they can do ok here.

Berner's are very sensitive to heat & are more likely than any other breed to suffer from heat stroke. They are typically very well behaved & can be left alone during an average work day, however, just like any dog, training and consistency are extremely important. Also get ready to vacuum like never before! Their health & personalities are very sensitive, but they're very sweet dogs, just know they are very high maintenance!

Berners are fine to leave home, just make sure it has plenty of water and food,*lots of shade.Ours LOVES the cold, since berners are from Switzerland. But,over here, the summers are 78-84 degrees, and ours is just fine, because she sits under the porch all day!

I had a Berner for 14 years growing up. She stayed indoor for the work day and liked to lay out on the porch after work. She never destroyed the house or anything like that. We kept her clipped short so there was little hair to vaccum and she looked really cute too. She did have some dry skin issues and never had any heath problems. Perfect doggy!

I've never had our Berner tear up anything. But, beware if food is out on the counter it may be too big a temptation!
