I am considering adopting an 8 year old Beagle from the Humane Society. I've taken him on several walks there and while all of the other dogs seem to bark at distractions and other dogs, this dog doesn't. For me this is a plus since I live in an apartment. He seems healthy and alert, but not particularly energetic, but I have been reading that Beagles generally are energetic. I don't mind (in fact prefer) the low energy, but I am wondering if his quietness and low energy are things I should be concerned about or just something that comes with being an 8 year old.?

Don't worry your beagle is ok. I have one too, he's quiet and he's fine he is 7 years old.

My experience with house beagles is that they are full of energy until about 5-6 years of age. They tend to "mellow out" when they get older. If they are actively working as hunting dogs they usually have the energetic nature much longer. It sounds normal to me for an 8 year old beagle to have lower energy.
