Basset Hounds are not protection dogs. If you want a family dog that will also be a watch dog - ie: alert family to people or animals on the property - then the Basset Hound works for what you want. But if you want a dog to physically protect your family through barking/biting/charging, ect; the Basset Hound is not the dog for you. Contact your local Personal Protection Trainer that can give you some idea's on what you want. On average, unless you train the dog yourself or pay someone to train your dog, most Personal Protection Dogs are German Shepherds, King Shepherds, Shilo Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, or Dutch Shepherds.

Basset hounds are the best with children, Our bassets BARK at anyone they don't know that come or pass the house. In that way I would say they are protective. A Basset hound is a stubborn breed This is not the breed to rush go potty and come in on a rainy day, They will take there sweet time. Basset hounds have a really good nose and really takes after there name hound. They get on a sent of a rabbit, they don't think they just go. So a fenced in yard is a must!! However Basset hounds, tap into you and your families feelings, and if they are sad he/she will do whatever it takes to cheer them up. They are one of the best breeds for a family with young children. its a fairly healthy breed as well.. I absolutely love them..
