without having gotten the dog from a breeder, it would be hard to completly tell the diff between a pit bull and an Am Staff. pits tend to be shorter than the Am Staff but with all the backyard breeding out here its hard to say, as well as u can double register your dog as either breed with certain kennel clubs. my best advice would be go to ur vet and ask if he thinks it looks like an Am Staff. Some insurance companies (state farm) will insure an am staff but not a pitbull.

Just for clarification a "pitbull" isn't really a breed. Its usually a mix of two or more terrier or bully breeds.

Why do you say a Staffordshire terrier or a pittbull is not really a breed?

The "pitbull" is a breed, somebody didn't do their research. To answer the question you'll be able to tell by looking at it, but if that doesn't work just do a picture comparison. In some cases though the Pitbull Breed may seem to look more like a hound to some people, these cases aren't usual and mostly just apply to game pitbulls which are other wise known as fighting pitbulls.

An american Staff-terrior is not usually taller than a American pitbull. American staff usually are short and stocky and american pitbulls are more taller even leaner at time like a grey hound.and by the way American pitbull Terrier, American staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire bull terrier are a breeds its been decided by the United Kingdom. Yes they did mix different types of bull dogs and terriors to get the right breed but last time I check that's how most dog breeds became to be. by breeding different breeds together to become a new breed.

An american pitbull terrier is an official breed recognized by the ukc. It is not akc recognized like the am staff. They are very similar in personality but the am staff does tend to be taller on average. Many of the "pitbulls" around are a mix of the two.

"PitBull" or "Pit Bull" is NOT a breed it is a genre' whereby most Bully breeds are described. The Bull Terrier is the only 'Pit Bull' genre banned in the UK, Norway and several other European countries - Staffy's, English Bulldogs, Bull Mastiffs etc etc are NOT banned , Dogo Argentina, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu and Presa Carnaris are banned.
