Please help!!! Does anyone know how to get an american eskimo to like another dog. We have had a black lab puppy for about 3 months now. My eskimo (Holly) is almost 3. She hates the lab! Growls at her ferocioiusly! We have to keep them seperated. Its horrible and I have about had it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks L.

We had an American Eskimo cross and she hated all other dogs she met. Is this a trait in this breed?

Eskis often like to be in charge of the other dogs in their environment. The lab is probably too big for your eski to feel comfortable and you're concern or intervention is probably also causing problems. Two things you should be aware of: 1. The lab will submit and the Eski will accept it. 2. It may not be something you would care to watch. I would leave them to work it out with minor intervention correcting the Eski for biting. Eventually, the Eski won't feel put out about the lab and the lab will end up with some very clean ears. At least that is how it works here. Both of my 15lb Eskis run the 100lb lab and the male frequently wrestles with him. They are noisy, but there is no real animosity or biting.

I would also make sure that you give the Eskie her food first, if the Eskie comes over for attention, have one hand available for the Eskie. I made sure that my other dog knew that the Eskie got everything first and that really seemed to help.

My Eskie always felt uncomfortable around other dogs, and would frequently growl at them. He did much better with larger dogs though.
