Another question, I have a yard and its medium sized. The only thing is there's a gate to a wooden deck in my yard. After you go through the gate you'll be on a wooden deck and in front of you would be a lake. If I let the malamute run in the yard, would it try and go to the water ? Also if my yard isn't suitable then if I exercised it daily would that work ?

I am not sure if you mean your yard is securely fenced, but with this breed it is important that it is. Malamutes may roam and since most have high prey drive, they may chase and kill small animals including other peoples' pets (cats, small dogs, etc). Many may go into the water too, that would depend on the individual dog. I've had some that love water and some that don't so much. But I would never have kept one in anything less than a very securely fenced yard. Even if you have a fenced yard, a malamute will need more exercise than being alone in the yard. Walks, jogs and other activities will be necessary. Remember, these are working dogs and need physical and mental stimulation on a daily basis, or they may be very destructive.
