I have an akita and everything i read said be careful be careful but honestly its all crap, as long as you take the time to socialize and train your akita you will be fine. We got the breed as a guard dog my husband is in the military and often gone but my dog is so sweet tempered he loves little kids and other dogs. I did put a lot of effort in to training him though. Akitas are such a great breed he's so lovable and sweet. they just take training because they are very protective as a breed.

I wouldn't worry about it. My family has had akitas since I was born, and the ones we've had were/are quite docile. Our first one used to sleep under my crib, for example. :)

Every breed of dog is "tested" to decide if they will be good family pets. Most of it is crap. Dogs should not be compared to the "breed standard" when it comes to temperament or personality. They should be treated as individuals because every dogs personality is going to be different no matter what breed it is. My female Akita was very scared of new people when I first got her. Obedience class helped her alot. It used to be she'd see a stranger like a block down from her and she'd still turn and run the other way. Now she will actually walk up to a stranger and it only takes her a few minutes to become friends with them. And I can trust her completely to never bite anyone. And she loves kids. If you want to make sure that it will be good with small kids it's almost always better to get a younger dog that way it can grow up with the kids.
