I have had my Akita for 12 years, now going into his 13 year. 3 days ago I forget to secure him before retiring and he has never ever left home before.but he is gone without a trace. we have searched repeatedly in our desert area within a 5 mile radius and because of his age we do not believe he would have gone far. Could he have wandered off to die?

I believe it is highly unlikely that your akita of 12 years just wandered away. Unless you recall any unusual behaviors, such as distant, loss of appetite, etc. If I were you I would look closely in your neighborhood. He may be in someone else's home.

somebody could have taken him, but its probably not the case. more likely he wandered off.

I've had 2 different akitas get loose once each. They eventually showed up on the front porch.
