My family is looking at airedales as a family pet and guard dog, I am seeing different ideas about their guard abilities. Also, it appears they would be fine around smaller livestock such as chickens and goats. Can anyone comment on these issues?

they would be if the airedale were raised with these animals as a puppy so that it learns not to harm them. otherwise, yes, they do make fine guard dogs.

While Airedales are used as Police Canines they are better suited as a snetry who would alert you of something amiss.

Airedale's are an awesome family pet that requires a disciplined owner. Once the ground rules are established, well, it's almost like having another child! My Airedale got along with anyone but if he sensed ill will at the door that person was not getting any where near my family. I have a Wheaton terrier now but would get another Airedale again and a Wheaton. A little more guard dog in the Airedale.
