I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE afghans. I took 3 breed match quizes, and each one 5 times and all but one of the 1 times(out of one of the 5 tries on one test) gave me the Affy :)YAY! Lucky me! But, papa says they are morons of the dog world :/ I think, and HIGHLY agree that they are just "strong willed" and "independent thinkers". Who is right?: Me or papa? I'd appretiate any help :)

Afghans aren't stupid, but I read that they have the lowest intelligence level of the dog world, meaning they can be harder to train and don't figure out problems quite as easily. They are trainable, but not trained easily.

Afghan's are hard to train, but loyal.

Afghan hounds are extremely intelligent. They are very smart and consider each command and situation carefully and decide if it is something they are interested in doing. This independent thinking and mindset can make for very difficult training. They also do not usually respond well to harsh training. But more positive reinforcement. If someone screams at my Affy, she will try to run away or will not obey the command. If you talk to her in calm tones she will be more likely to obey. My affy was a rescue she came from her original home directly to mine - I have little information of her home life other than one of 4 dogs and 3 small children. Her responses could be a source of her original upbringing.

The hound I had was very smart, I put a CD obedience degree on him, started on the CDX. They were developed to hunt on their own (or with another Afghan) so they do not come when called but after they caught their prey. He taught me how to play mine games. If you want a easy dog get a working dog, not a sight hound.
