QUESTION: I am having trouble trying to fit the right collar for my puggle. Even with a harness if he gets scared and pulls back he slips out of the collar. The main problem is the head is small and the body is big as comapre to most dogs so all he normal collars and harnesses do not work. Any suggestions?
Anonymous - 11/29/2011 12:56:57 PM
Respond to Question
I had this same problem with one of my puggles. I ended up getting one of the 2 lead leashes that are used to walk 2 dogs with one leash. I clip one lead to her harness and one lead to her collar, so if she slips off of one she is still attached and doesn't run through the neighborhood anymore.

Anonymous - 10/20/2011 6:12:31 PM
Respond to Question
My puggle was doing the same thing. I found a vet that said when she bites you, put your hand over her muzzle and then pop your hand. Dont hit her but make sure you firmly pop your hand while around her muzzle. This worked great with my girl and she would stop instantly and now she is five months and no longer tries to bite :)

QUESTION: how long can you leave a puggle alone
Anonymous - 8/10/2011 3:17:39 PM
Respond to Question
I leave my Puggle alone for a few hours everyday when I go to work/school. I never leave her for more than 5 hours though. She usually just sleeps while I am gone, however, she's still fairly young (14 mos.) so occasionally she gets into trouble. Whenever I leave her alone longer than average, I make sure I leave extra time for playing and walks :)

QUESTION: I am thinking of adopting a 9 mos. old puggle. the owner is moving and cannot take the dog. Do you think a 9 mos. old would be hard to train or break old bad habits ? The current owner tells me the dog nips at your hands but it is just playing. I don't like the way that sounds. Thanking you for any advice you can give.
Anonymous - 7/31/2011 4:10:45 PM
Respond to Question
I think it is a common behavior for puppies to nip, as it is their way of playing and interacting with you. This behavior should be acknowledged and stopped at an early age so the dog understands it's unacceptable. Puppy nips tend not to hurt. However, when the puppy grows up they will turn into dog nips/bites, which are not so pleasant. Don't let a little nipping turn you away from a Puggle, they are the best dogs ever! And nipping, along with other bad habits, can be corrected and preventing with the proper training.
Anonymous - 8/14/2011 3:23:40 PM
if you want your puggle to stop doing that tap him firmly on the nose and say NO with a firm voice and he should learn not to do that. if you dont want to tap him on the nose skip that part but still say no and ignore him for about 2-5 mins
Anonymous - 8/8/2011 5:25:08 PM
Is the puggle neutered ? I was told this type of nipping can be because a dog is not fixed.
Anonymous - 8/6/2011 4:33:40 PM
I am currently speaking with a lady that has a 9 mos old puggle in NJ and they told me the same habits. I'm wondering if it's the same dog. I believe they live in Mercer County

Anonymous - 6/12/2011 8:33:16 PM
Respond to Question
puggles are very sweet and loving dogs, they are protective of your family i have a puggle named princess and she loves kids and other animals,She is also very playfull they need lots off toys and stuff to chew on and you cant leave them alone for long periods of time or they will get stressed HOPE THIS HELPED :)
Anonymous - 1/18/2012 11:43:13 PM
I have the best puggle ever. She was extremely easy to house break. She has always been super gentle with our 4 kids (including a toddler who often got too rough). Her activity level is based on our family's activity. She is happy to sleep all day if we are spending a lazy day, but on the other hand she has the energy to spend a day playing at the park as well.
The biggest frustration we had was as a puppy, if our son left out plastic toys she would chew them up, but that behavior stopped.
Anonymous - 9/6/2011 2:25:31 PM
Puggles are not very loud, some do enjoy howling. They are GREAT with kids. Puggles are the most playful, loving, and cuddly breed of dogs i've had an experience with. Like any dog a firm stance and good training will ensure they Puggle behaves. It took only a short amount of time to house train my 2 puggles.

QUESTION: do puggles shed a lot?
Anonymous - 5/31/2011 3:57:20 PM
Respond to Question
To control shedding use zoom groom it gets off the fur and does not hurt the dogs skin. Unlike FURminator which hurts their skin so use a brush that works, and if you dont want hair on the coaches make sure you train them right away to not go on the coach's. avoid dark colors at all costs.
Anonymous - 9/10/2011 10:49:20 AM
My Puggle sheds ALOT!! Avoid dark colored couches because you will see the hair!! Or you could just train your puppy not to get on the couch. I got a giant pillow for my dog to lay on the floor in the living room but she doesn't always lay there. Buy a FURminator, it a great way to keep your puggle groomed. They are quite expensive ($40) but well worth it.

PUGGLES ARE PRONE TO KNEE PROBLEMS. THEY NEED SURGERY TO DEEPEN THE GROOVE IN THE BACK KNEES SO THE TENDON DOES NOT SLIP OFF.

QUESTION: Do puggles run away easiy?
Anonymous - 4/10/2011 9:24:50 AM

My 4 year old puggle girl is also an escape artist. She will stay in the yard if you are watching her, but as soon as you're not paying attention she will be gone. If I notice before she gets too far, a stern command will bring her home, otherwise I have to chase her.
Anonymous - 9/6/2011 2:09:58 PM
My puggle is 3 years old. He's gotten outside before but we trained him to be a "house dog". This is where he will go outside and walk around, but won't run away. This comes in handy with company because he can roam and mingle with the other relatives, but won't run away. Train him/her.
Anonymous - 7/10/2011 3:52:25 PM

QUESTION: Is it easy to train a puggle pup?
Anonymous - 4/10/2011 9:23:35 AM
Respond to Question
Yes, very easy- puggle's are one of the easiest dogs to train because they are SO motivated by food. My vet told me that since pugs and beagles are two breeds highly food motivated, to keep close watch on her weight. And a Stat cop told me they use beagles for drug dogs also because of their high food motivation. Oh, and my puggle is all about her nose, and smells.

QUESTION: What kind of brush should I use for my puggle?
Anonymous - 2/21/2011 2:34:21 PM
Respond to Question
Furminators damage skin and are painful. Try brushing your own skin with one, good groomers never use a furminator. I am a groomer and for short haired breeds that shed I use a good shampoo and conditioner for dogs and a zoom groom brush its a rubber brush found at petco or petsmart and it pulls out the undercoat and loose hair perfectly and painfree
Anonymous - 6/2/2011 7:22:16 PM
I use the 'furminator' on my puggle. It helps pull up the undercoat. I can't say he's a big fan, but it definately works.
Anonymous - 4/21/2011 7:41:16 PM
Curry brush. It's got little rubber nubs on it. Like you would use on a horse.

QUESTION: Do puggles get ugly when they get older or is that just some?
Anonymous - 2/2/2011 6:45:42 PM
Respond to Question
I think that's kind of like asking do people get ugly when they get older...as your puppy grows up, you will always be able to see the cute adorable puppy you first brought home so to you, your puggle (or whatever breed you end up with) is going to stay cute and adorable no matter what age it is.

QUESTION: Do Puggles like the country? do they do good with other dogs?
Anonymous - 11/24/2010 10:18:53 PM
Respond to Question
Both of our Puggles like the great outdoors. We have property in the mountains, and we turn them loose up there. Early on we were concerned about them running off and not coming back, as Beagles sometimes do, but ours do not go far from our acre and a half, and always come back to the trailer in 30 minutes or so. They love to run free!
Anonymous - 1/5/2012 12:16:49 AM
My puggle loves to run in an open feild, but she will run until her legs give out if I let her. She loves other dogs and cats. Puggles are not shy either!

QUESTION: do they really bark when no one is at home or destroy things?
Anonymous - 11/19/2010 10:03:23 PM
Respond to Question
We crate trained our puggle as a puppy for when we weren't home. If left out then she would chew up anything plastic she could get her teeth on. She is now 4 and we can leave her home alone all day with no problems. She has never been a barker unless someone comes into our yard after dark. Twice this has alerted us to thieves who would have stole our kids bikes and gas in our cars.
Anonymous - 9/6/2011 2:35:39 PM
My Puggle will chew on everything and anything. She thinks she runs the house. My advise is to keep everything very high because they can stand on there back legs for long periods of time so they can get things off counter tops also.
Anonymous - 5/23/2011 4:17:20 PM
Mine does neither. She is perfect!
Anonymous - 2/13/2011 11:27:53 PM
Sometimes our puggle barks for a little while right after we leave the house, but she is usually pretty quiet, and ours doesn't destroy things.
Anonymous - 1/22/2011 1:57:37 PM
Yes they do! They bark randomly and tear things up!
