Overview

The Pekepoo, also called the Peke-A-Poo, is created by the crossing of two breeds: Pekingese and Poodle. They are commonly referred to as "designer dogs" and are one of the more popular crosses.

Character

The ideal Pekepoo should be well-built, sturdy, and hardy in appearance. They should possess a lively and keen expression.

Temperament

Devoted, loyal, and affectionate, the Pekepoo is cheerful and loving. They are sensitive, family oriented, and do not do well if ignored or left alone for extended periods of time. Boredom and loneliness will lead to destructive behavior and incessant barking. They do best in a home with older, well-mannered children. They do well with dogs and non-canine pets they have been raised with. Pekepoo's are wary of strangers and will quickly alert their family to visitors and out of the ordinary sounds.

Care

Depending on coat type, the Pekepoo requires daily brushing to prevent matting and tangling or professional clipping. Bathing should be done when necessary using a mild shampoo. Dental hygiene is important to prevent early tooth loss. The Pekepoo may be prone to such health issues as PRA, skin problems, diabetes, anemia, ear infections, and heart disease.

Coat

The Pekepoo may have a double coat that consists of a long, straight outer coat with a short, dense under coat. They may also have a very curly coat or a combination of both.

Training

Early socialization and obedience are recommended. The Pekepoo may be stubborn and difficult to housebreak. The crate training method works best. They will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods. Training must be done with firmness, fairness, patience, and consistency.

Activity

The Pekepoo is well suited for apartment living. They are relatively active indoors and should be given a variety of safe toys to keep them occupied. Pekepoo's enjoy family play sessions, securely leashed walks, and off-lead play time in a fenced yard.

QUESTION: how much do you feed a pekeapoo puppy

Anonymous - 12/19/2011 8:34:53 AM

Respond to Question

About 1/2 TBS of wet food daily or just put down dry puppy food for on-demand feeding. I have two adult peke-a-poos and it takes them about 4 days together to go through 2 Cups of dry food.

QUESTION: Insofar as peekapoo parentage, what is the difference between a puppy whose mother is a purebred peke and the father is a purebred poodle VS. a puppy whose mother is a purebred poodle and the father is a purebred peke? What are the distinguishing characteristics of puppies of these different parentages?

Anonymous - 12/7/2011 10:48:36 PM

Respond to Question

There isn't any difference between which parent is which. Be careful though if one parent is an actual peke-a-poo. Some breeders try to breed out the "peke" part by breeding a peke-a-poo with a pure bred poodle. Others will try to breed out the "poo" by breeding a peke-a-poo with a pur bred Peke. Poodles have a tendency to be hyper with a curly coat. Pekes can be a bit more tempermental but have a silky, glossy coat. The best temperment is when you have an equal mix of both breeds.

QUESTION: Hello I just received a peke-chi as a gift for my son. She seems very timid and sweet. I was an owner for 14 years to THE BEST cocker spaniel and I am clueless about this dog breed. So any info you can give me on this cross breed would be great. Will she be a major shedder? Will she do well with my son who is 4 months now? Will she be difficult to train? Is she a dog that will constantly be sick? Is there something I should look out for? How is her life span? Thanks again -Kelly-

QUESTION: My sister is allergic to our peekapoo, but she had a golden retriever, and wasn't bothered as much, even when our dog is not in the house. Our Peanut is groomed prof. every month and we brush her often. Why the reaction?

Anonymous - 9/28/2011 8:13:23 AM

Respond to Question

Pekeapoos are actually known as "hypoallergenic" dogs and are actually recommended for people with allergies. Check with your groomer. My guess is that the actual reaction is to a shampoo that they are using.

QUESTION: I have a friend that wants to find out health information before breeding her 5 and a half year old peekepoo, boston terrier mix with a thoroughbred peekepoo. She does not want to risk it if there is any high risks of health issues by doing this. I would be very greatful to anyone who could answer this for me. Shyla is her baby, but someone has told my friend that it is more healthy for Shyla to have atleast 1 litter of puppies.

Respond to Question

I'd check with your vet. The pure Pekeapoo will most likely be smaller than your pke/boston terrier so the size of the pups shouldn't be an issue. However, I had a peke-a-poo who turned out to have a serious heart murmer. They didn't catch it until she was 12 and if I had tried to breed her it would have killed her. Have your vet specifically check for that.

QUESTION: Is a pekepoo hypoallergenic?

Anonymous - 1/31/2011 12:00:14 AM

Respond to Question

There is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog, however, a Peek a poo most certainly is a dog that can be tollerated more easily (if not entirely) by allergy sufferers. This is a trait that they inherit from the Poodle. The only way to completely know if this dog would not bother a person with allergies is to spend some time in the dogs presense and see if there is any kind of allergy reaction. But chances are good that there won't be. A Schnoodle might be a better choice (1/2 poodle & 1/2 schnauzer) because both the poodle and the schnauzer are breeds that are considered to be great for allergy sufferers (with Peekapoos it's only the Poodle). http://www.dogsdiscovered.com

QUESTION: Do pekepoo's shed alot?

Anonymous - 1/6/2011 6:52:54 PM

Respond to Question

Almost no shedding at all. In winter, when a pekepoo's coats are longer they may leave a few little "tufs" similar to cotton balls in their bedding but that's it.

Abbiley - 1/25/2012 9:42:00 PM

Peekapoo's do not shed much at all and have to be kept well brushed or their fur matts up quickly.

QUESTION: i HAVE A Pekepoo, 2 YRS OLD, BUT SHE ALWAYS HAD A VERY SENSITIVE STOMACH. DO THESE BREEDS OFTEN HAVE SENSITIVE STOMACHS? PLEASE CAN U ANSWER THIS QUESTION REPLY

Anonymous - 10/25/2010 6:23:49 PM

Respond to Question

I am on my 3rd and 4th pekeapoo right now. Two have had sensitive stomachs and two haven't. The first one found an old bone in the yard and later developed an infection that I believe led to the life-long sensitive stomach. The other one is on the nervous side. They can eat anything, just be sure to keep it consistent. Don't mix brands if you can avoid it and limit or eliminate table feeding.

Abbiley - 1/25/2012 9:44:06 PM

I have a Pekepoo too, I have found that it had to do with the fiber content. If I stayed at 3% or lower fiber on the package she did well no the vomiting and straining stopped. We use Hills Science Diet Bite Size for Toy Dogs. I am nervous because I will soon switch to for seniors in this brand so hope it will work as well.

I had a Pekepoo when I was growing up. Back then they were just mutts. He was probably the best dog we ever had; intelligent, protective, and quite hardy. We never pampered our dogs and we never had a problem with him eating anything. They are a GREAT breed!
