My Shipoo loves kids and yes when she plays she bites but does not hurt. She is so playful.
Anonymous - 1/12/2012 6:44:49 PM
The black shihpoo that is pictured above looks exactly like mine. She will be three months tomorrow. She only bites if she is in play mode, and it doesnt hurt, it just seems like it will. Puppies do that, and it means they are just playing. It is totally normal. My brother is 7 and he gets along just fine with her, and none of us ever complain about her bite hurting us
Anonymous - 12/29/2011 7:37:25 PM
your shih poo will bite or scratch if you play or pet him roughly. a little puppy is going to nibble but it won't hurt. they are teething.

Also you can wait 28 days and bring her to the vet for an ultrasound and if she's pregnant make a date to get her fixed and it takes care of the lab puppy problem. Hope this helps.

QUESTION: My shihpoo puppy is about 9 weeks old and a few minutes ago when he woke up from his nap he looked dizzy. His head was moving slightly like he was dizzy. Does anyone know what this is? He has been very playful and fun. A little out of character for him.
Anonymous - 10/11/2011 8:17:33 PM
Respond to Question
make sure your shih poo is hydrated and not hot. Maybe you have too many blankets. You can pull up at the nape of the neck. If the skin retracts back like a rubberband than the dog is hydrated. If the skin takes time retracting back than it could be dehydrated. Put ice cubes in the water bowl. The dog will think it's a treat or put one on the floor to see if the pup will lick at it.
Anonymous - 12/28/2011 8:05:51 PM
You may need to start force feeding your shihpoo pup Pedia-lyte and make sure you get the second set of shots. It save our dogs life.

Anonymous - 9/26/2011 5:38:22 PM
Respond to Question
Our Shihpoo was a real chewer as a puppy, but we gave it lots of toys. She loves toys with noise makers and still plays with them. Our grown children complain that she has more toys then they ever did and I tend to agree with the kids. But she doesn't chew on anything she isn't allowed to chew now.
Anonymous - 1/20/2012 2:40:52 PM
The key to training any dog is repetition. And you must discipline after right away. If you wait more than a minute the dog will not remember what he did wrong. Dog's have very short attention spans and memory. Tap the tip of the pup's nose (this is a sensitive spot and pup may sneeze) when you see the pup biting or chewing he is not supposed to, then replace with a dog toy. Change your voice. Stern when discipline and soft when rewarding. Never say a dog's name when disciplining otherwise they will associate with doing something bad everytime you say their name.
Anonymous - 12/28/2011 8:11:01 PM
every time our shih poo chews something she's not supposed to i take it away and replace it with her toy. i don't confuse her with letting her chew my old socks vs disciplining her for chewing my new socks. no socks, period. i keep her toys in her basket and get hand her that every single time. it took a lot of patience and repetition, but it works :-)
Anonymous - 12/11/2011 7:06:25 PM
I have a shihpoo & she loves to chew everything. Here's what we did when she was a baby: first fill an empty soda can with coins, then when he chews or bites something you don't want him to, shake the can loudly and say "no biting." And then give him a toy or something he IS allowed to chew.

Anonymous - 9/22/2011 1:48:19 PM
Respond to Question
I would change the food - sprays just cover the problem - get to the source.
Anonymous - 1/12/2012 7:37:23 PM
You should bathe a dog every 2-3 weeks to avoid dry skin. This will make a dog scratch like crazy. It could be the flavor of food or treats you are giving him. You can use the dog spray found at petsmart so long the dog doesn't have allergies. Shih poos are very sensitive as pups to perfumes, certain foods (chicken allergies), plush toys. They should grow out of it in their adult years.
Anonymous - 12/28/2011 8:14:24 PM
My shihpoo's hair is fairly long, and she loves to play in the dirt. Since she sleeps with us in bed I bathe her regularly every Sunday in our bathtub followed by a good brush. She also has fragrance pet hair spray we use for in the mean time, which can be found at petsmart

QUESTION: I have a 3.5 year old white shihpoo that I rescued. He was raised with cats and was very much like a cat when I got him. He survived on cat food and garbage. He likes to pee on things in the house! how do i stop hime
Anonymous - 9/1/2011 3:17:20 PM
Respond to Question
FIX your shih poo. Males pee on things to mark their turf. He will not stop unless you neuter him asap.
dbart7755 - 1/23/2012 1:15:32 PM
Every time your shihpoo pees or poops, gently pick him up, take him outsite - right away and put him down in the garden and say his name and go pee or go poop! I did that with mine. Never hit or scare him - do it all gently and with a firm voice. Mine is afraid of loud noises so we talk with her and tell her what is going on. if we are going out we tell her and reassure her that we will be back soon. They are such loving gentle souls. And so clever! We also used the crate. I put a kong toy in with almond butter and put her in. 1st nite she went wild - leave them be. Second nite a little less - by the end of the week she got it. Never liked the kennel so we put it away and she wanders to where she wants whenever. Be patient! It is worth it!

QUESTION: Hi I am thinking about getting a shih poo and I was just wondering could it stay in the house for about 8 hrs a day on it's own?
Anonymous - 9/1/2011 4:16:05 AM
Respond to Question
our 9 month old shih poo is in the house 8am-5pm every day and no accidents. it took until she was about 6months old before this could happen, but they're tiny bladders have to grow first before they can figure it out. we crated her for the first few months with puppy pads as it's understandable at a young age they can't hold it that long. the vet said about an hour for every month old they are.

QUESTION: I have recently bought a shih poo puppy... He is now 10 weeks old, but he likes to chew... ON EVERYTHING ! He also hates going pee on the grass outside !!!! Is that normal?!?!?!?
Thanks!
Anonymous - 8/28/2011 1:53:19 PM
Respond to Question
I just got a two-year old rescue shih-poo and mine hates peeing in the grass too! I think it's hilarious, although a little inconvenient when it's really early/late. The best thing I've found is to put him in the grass and turn my back. My dog loves affectionate attention and will pee when he's not distracted by me. I reward him afterward with praises and pats.

QUESTION: I bought a tri colored shihpoo puppy when he was 9 weeks old. When he was about 4.5 months old I took him to get groomed because it was sooo hot out and he didn't like the heat. After a couple weeks when his hair started growing back he was completely white. Is it normal that tri colored shih poo dogs lose all their color? My boyfriend and I have this fear that he was switched. Please let me know if this is normal!
Anonymous - 8/20/2011 8:21:27 PM
Respond to Question
Hi
Our shihpoo was pitch black when we got her. Within the first year she turned grey. I think it's the poodle part that changes color. She's still awfully cute. I don't think they switched your dog. The haircut just shows the new growth hair and its new color.
Anonymous - 8/30/2011 9:16:34 PM
We have had two tri color shih poos and the same thing happened to us. We thought they gave us the wrong dog at the groomer. So I'm sure its normal.
