Overview

The Schnoodle is created by the crossing of two breeds: Schnauzer and Poodle. They are commonly referred to as "designer dogs" and are one of the most popular companion crosses.

Character

The ideal Schnoodle should be well-proportioned, squarely-built, and possess a sturdy athletic appearance. They should have a keen, bold, and lively expression.

Temperament

The Schnoodle is affectionate, loving, and devoted. They do best in a home with older, considerate children or children they have been raised with. They do well with dogs or non-canine pets they have been with since puppyhood. Schnoodle's may not tolerate dogs or children they do not know. They do not do well if ignored or left alone for extended periods of time. Boredom or loneliness will lead to destructive behavior and incessant barking. They are highly suspicious of strangers and make excellent watchdogs.

Care

The Schnoodle requires frequent brushing to prevent matting and tangling and may also require professional clipping. Bathing should be done when necessary. It is important to keep the ears clean to prevent infection. They may be prone to such health issues as PRA, skin disorders, Von Willebrand's Disease, diabetes, ear infection, epilepsy, and heart disease.

Coat

The coat of the Schnoodle may be wiry and coarse, curly, or a combination of both.

Training

Early socialization and obedience are a must. The Schnoodle may be stubborn and difficult to housebreak. The crate training method works best. They will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods. Training must be done with firmness, fairness, patience, and consistency.

Activity

The Schnoodle is highly energetic but will do okay in an apartment provided they are sufficiently exercised and mentally stimulated. Schnoodle's are adept at learning tricks and enjoy agility, securely leashed walks, and off-lead play in a fenced yard.

QUESTION: I just got a Schnoodle three days ago and she is very sweet but every time I walk away or don't pay her attention all she does is whine or cry. I can't walk away, talk to someone, use the bathroom or change clothes without her whining. Is this just a "puppy" thing and if so how do I get her to calm down?

Respond to Question

this is a puppy thing, and she should grow out of it soon. schnoodles need a lot of mental stimulation, so consider getting her some dog puzzle games.

QUESTION: When we are home and not aware, why is it our schnoodle is occasionally wetting or defecating in the house? Is this a personality issue? We've had him 6 months and he is 3 yrs. old.

Respond to Question

My schnoodle likes a lot of attention maybe he needs more attention and place him on a regular schedule. Also he might prefer to be walked, my schnoodle holds his poop until he is walked up the street.

Anonymous - 1/21/2012 11:18:17 AM

I obtained my schnoodle when she was six weeks old and it took her 3 months to fully house train. What I found helpful was taking her out every couple of hours and right after she would eat. When I would leave to work I would leave potty training pads and every time she should use them I would give her positive reinforcement. Since seem to work for me to train. A thing with the schnoodle because it does like being with the family it might choose not to let you know it needs to go outside because it doesn't want to be left outside too long. So as soon as you know it has used the restroom let him back in and that way it learns that he won't be left there.

You might try treats to get your schnoodle to go, also encouragement. Also it might be hawks, they love small animals. Dogs see alot of things we do not.

Same here! Our schnoodle potty's in the house. And we have trouble getting him to go outside

QUESTION: Schnoodle's spend so much digging with their noses to the ground. why?

Anonymous - 9/27/2010 5:09:55 PM

Respond to Question

Truffles??? Lol! Schnauzers were bred as ratters. From what I've read, they still retain the ability. I would imagine this would have something to do with them trying to sniff things out. Mine do the same.

Anonymous - 8/3/2011 10:28:49 AM

My Schnoodle does that too it is soooo weird!!!!

Anonymous - 5/5/2011 3:05:00 PM

The schnauzer part of a Schnoodle is trained to sniff out truffles, or underground mushroom, so they do that.
