Overview

The Yorktese, also called the Morkie, is created by the crossing of two breeds: Yorkshire Terrier and Maltese. They are commonly referred to as "designer dogs". The Yorktese is exceedingly popular.

Character

The ideal Yorktese is well-proportioned, sturdy, and hardy in appearance. They possess a lively and sweet expression.

Temperament

The Yorktese is not recommended for homes with small children. They are affectionate, loyal, devoted, and loving. They do well with dogs and non-canine pets they have been raised with. They bond closely to their family and do not do well if ignored or left alone for extended periods of time. Boredom and loneliness will lead to destructive behavior and incessant barking. The Yorktese is suspicious of strangers and will alert their family to strangers and out of the ordinary sounds.

Care

The Yorktese requires daily brushing to prevent matting and tangling. Bathing should be done when necessary using a mild shampoo. Dental hygiene is important to prevent early tooth loss. They may be prone to such health issues as digestive problems, sensitivity to anesthesia, slipped stifle, and skin problems.

Coat

The coat of the Yorktese is typically long, silky, straight, and fine in texture.

Training

Early socialization and obedience are recommended. The Yorktese may be stubborn and difficult to housebreak. They will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods. Training must be done with firmness, fairness, patience, and consistency.

Activity

Yorktese are well suited for apartment living provided they are sufficiently exercised and mentally stimulated. They are relatively active indoors and should have a variety of safe toys to keep them occupied. The Yorktese enjoys securely leashed walks, family play sessions, and off-lead play in a fenced yard.

QUESTION: We have a 1 year old Morkie and he is obsessive over our shih tzu. To the point that if any of our other dogs go around her he will start fighting them. So we have to leve him pined and that is not good for him. We need to know if any one knows what we can do to stop this behavior? we need help please.

QUESTION: How long does it take to determine what the color of a Morkie's fur will be? If when you bought him and it was a darker color like a yorkie, but was slowly changing to a lighter, does this mean he will get more colorings like the maltese? His father was a full bred maltese and his mom was a full bred yorkie. Just curious.

My Morkie does great with our very large Laberdoodle. She really doesn't know her size, she is always challanging (playfully) the larger dog and has the advantage of being faster and able to hide under the furniture. The two of them are so much fun to watch play.

We have a morkie that will go outdoors and indoors on her pad. She is 5 now and we still do both and she poops and pees both inside and outside. She knows to do both and I would think yours would do the same. We do give her a treat everytime she goes on her mat, maybe try that as well.

Yes, give a lot of love prior to leaving along with a treat, play toys, food, water, some place to use the potty and reward them for being good when you return morkies are great pets :-)

QUESTION: My morkie is a girl and barely 3 years old and she is only 5 pounds! Should I be worried, but I dont know if she is a teacup or not. She is also fixed, but tries to nip and growls at other dogs even if they are a LOT bigger than her. I use bubble and beads shampoo which seems to help with matting for any length of hair. Also if your morkie is going to be wearing clothes a lot think about a short haircut around back and tummy, leaving tail,face and legs long. It is a cute haircut and easy to maintain.

I think that it might be low blood sugar. I understand that a little honey under her tongue will balance it again. Also, I wouldn't let her go for long periods of time without eating.

Morkies come in different varieties. All depends on genetics really. I have a 9 week old Morkie now (ive had him for a week now) and he had "down" ears. Ive seen some others that have "up" ears. It just all depends how his parents looked.

My 4 month old Morkie has "up" ears! I was hoping for down... But at one point, we nearly had one up and one down! LOL! It was cute! The other ear stood up 2 weeks later. From what I hear, most of them have down ears.

Im not completely sure, but im pretty sure to show a dog it has to be AKC registered and morkies cannot be registered as a breed.

QUESTION: Just bought a 10 week old morkie. Is he considered a mutt or is it recognized as a breed and what are the major differences between a morkie and a shorkie besides the obvious. No,the Morkie is NOT acknowledged by the AKC (American Kennel Club). Mainly being the reason that is it not a pure breed dog.

Neither is a breed...they are mutts. If you want to learn about YOUR dog you need to spend time with your dog. You can also do a lot of research about yorkies and maltese (separately, NOT as a "Morkie") because it will have characteristics from both breeds.
