QUESTION: My Mal Shi is flea and mite free he is bathed weekly and groomed daily however he scrathes alot like he has pest. Someone mentioned a skin bacteia that causes him discomfort. Are there shampoos or medications to help him?
Anonymous - 1/26/2012 1:04:22 PM
Respond to Question
I believe you are bathing your mal shi too much, back off to every two weeks not weekly. Also switch to an oatmeal shampoo, it is better for their skin. I think by doing you should be all set. If the itching continues there might be an allergy. Try to avoid wheat in their food. Lamb and rice would be a good choice.

QUESTION: I have a 3 month old malshi. I love him so very much. He is the dog I have always wanted. I noticed the other day though that he has a lot of hair loss on his tail. Is this normal? Will it grow back? I know that when babies are born they loose hair. I was wondering if it was the same with a malshi. Thank you

Anonymous - 1/9/2012 5:03:44 PM
Respond to Question
8 weeks is very young for your puppy. Crate them when you are away, and at night time. Not sure why this helps, but is stopped my first dog EVER in about 8 days. Take outside immediately when you wake up, feed, and take outside again before you leave the house. I never took mine out at night, she just learned to sleep all night (1st time dog owner, I just didn't know). They LOVE doing things for Treats, so you could offer something special for peeing outside. It is true that they do not do well with harsh words, but they get the voice inflection!! Very smart. I recommend attending dog training courses as soon as the Vet deems necessary. Good luck, hope this helped!

Use the bell method of training it to go outside. Ours was 10 weeks old and learned to ring the bell 95% of the time within a week. They like praise. Kennel train it for feeding and sleeping. It gives them that safe secure place to be. It also gives them a place to be put when you're tired, because they have a lot of energy.

My Vet recommended their "By Prescription only" brand puppy canned food. The food you are feeding may be too rich for your puppy. I, too, experienced this same episode (hence an ER visit to the Vet, $120.00 later) He was weening and couldn't digest the food, so I now puree it in the blender. Hope this helps.
Anonymous - 1/24/2012 2:11:19 AM
NO, there is nothing wrong with her. For a while just keep giving her the food. I know it seems like alot, but in time she will adjust.

Anonymous - 8/1/2011 12:09:26 AM
Respond to Question
Malshi's will be, if they are raised with them through their lives. Just like normal dogs. There isn't much difference. They should not be trouble, they are pretty playful as long as you keep them happy. Common price depends.

My Malshi loves everyone but doesnt seem to like when kids go to grab him or try and pick him up, i think this is mostly just because he doesnt feel secure but he is the sweetest pup and always greats you with a kiss (some kids may not like how loving they can be though).

QUESTION: I purchased 2 Mal-Shi this past March. They are both males and from the same litter. They just turned 1 on June 14. They have been neutered since March at the age of about 9 months. We are still trying to pottytrain them as well. However, lately we have been seeing them becoming increasingly aggressive with one another, fighting and not letting go of the other dog, owner getting injured trying to breakup the fight. My girls love them so much as do my husband and I. Does anyone have any advice on how to rectify this problem? They are always together. Sleep, eat, walk, etc.
raynae2000 - 6/16/2011 9:49:29 AM
Respond to Question
I would strongly recommend watching episodes of the Dog Whisperer or purchasing videos (Cesar Milan) especially dealing with aggression between dogs that live together. I wish that we had had this knowledge when our dogs were younger. After the youngest one reached two years old we had to keep them separated by baby gates. We attempted reconcilliation several times but the last contact was severe so the separation for the rest of their lives! good luck. it is possible to solve the problem.

QUESTION: My malshi is very stubborn about potty training. He is 5 months old and still makes accidents on the carpet. In a month i will be leaving him home alone and don't know how to train him. is it too late for potty training for a 5 month?
Anonymous - 5/26/2011 8:34:04 PM
Respond to Question
Be proactive in taking him outside. Praise your malshi with treats when he goes. While most people say they are hard to potty trian, ours was not. We used the bell method. Teaching him to ring the bell when he has to go outside and then praising him when we goes with a treat. The bell method worked for us at least 90% of the time when ours was 10 weeks old. After a few short weeks later, we have not had any "accidents".
Anonymous - 1/5/2012 4:43:43 PM
These small breeds are very slow to housebreak, BUT malshi's can be housebroken and once they are, they're terrific - don't be surprised if it takes smaller a year or longer. However, if you are concerned, check with your vet to be sure that the pup doesn't have bladder infection, etc.
Keep at it, watch him closely and reward when he goes where you want.

QUESTION: We just bought a Mal-shi from a girl here in my town.. He's 5 months old and absolutely a lover. Thing is.. he is sooo lazy and sleeps.. a lot. Is that okay? I thought they were supposed to be alert and energetic???
Anonymous - 3/3/2011 8:46:01 PM
Respond to Question
you have to get your mal-shi used to being more active. that might lead to being over weight
Anonymous - 5/31/2011 7:06:47 PM
I do not think this is a problem. Five months is still young, and your Mal-shi might be getting her "puppy rest". I,too, have a 3 month mal-shi, and although she can be energetic, sleeps a lot. If she does not grow out of this habit, maybe she is just not an energetic dog. Shih tzus are more laid back and this dog may be more Shih tzu than Maltese. However, your pet might be sick, so you should check for other signs (ex: coughing, sneezing) Hope this helps! Have fun with her.

QUESTION: I got a Mal shi for Christmas and he's great! But he seemed to be more puppy pad trained when I got him! For the most part, he is not home alone, but when he is, he uses the puppy pads to pee, but when we are home, he seems to be using the carpet more. How do I break him of this? Anytime I see him sniffing around, I take him over to his puppy pad and if he has an accident, I put the "accident" on the pad, but this does not seem effective.
I am also having problems getting the brown stain from his eyes. I bought some cleaning pads at the pet store, but they do absolutley nothing! I heard distilled water helps for drinking water as tap water has alot of iron in it, but I don't know if this is a myth?

Try Angeleyes! Works awesome on my maltese.
Anonymous - 1/13/2012 1:00:30 AM
My buff colored malshi's eyes would get a red stain. Nothing I tried worked well. Wellness "Five" dry dog food for puppies was recommended. It is more expensive, but the red is completely gone. At first we mixed it with the food he had been eating until it was gone. Now he only eats Wellness brand. I highly recommend it.
Anonymous - 3/13/2011 1:00:52 PM
Its true - distilled water helps. Also keep your Mal shi's face as dry as possible.
Anonymous - 2/20/2011 3:15:12 PM
Have you tried angel eyes at petedge.com?
Now if the peeing becomes a big problem get a long lead put it around your arm or waist. This may seem mean but it only takes 1-3 days to teach your dog to let you know when he/she wants out. Dogs do not like to pee in their area so the pup will tug on the lead if he/she need to go pee. Good luck a groomer
Anonymous - 1/25/2011 8:22:55 PM
As for the peeing, mal-shis like to pee privately. That is the reason he pees on his puppy pad when your not home. So move your pee pad to somwhere closed or private. BUT when u do this, make sure ur puppy knows where the pad is! Put him on the pad and let him sniff it! As for the brown stains, i have been having the same problems with my dog. Here's a site i found that might be effective?

QUESTION: Do Malshi dogs shed a lot.
Anonymous - 1/23/2011 6:48:26 PM
Respond to Question
Anonymous - 6/9/2011 11:37:22 AM
I have a mal-shi and she does not shed at all. Everyone I have asked says this dog is little to no shedding. My family is allergic, so we could only bring home a no-shedding dog, and a mal-shi is perfect because both the Maltese and Shitzu are little to no shedding (which usually means none). So if your looking for a low-shedding, lovable and playful family dog, the Malshi is the way to go.
Anonymous - 4/15/2011 6:26:29 PM
Every dog sheds. Short haird dogs shed year around. Malshi dogs will shed 2 times a year. to grow a winter coat, and to grow a summer coat. that itchy sage is its shedding period.
Anonymous - 3/8/2011 11:07:32 PM
Yes Malshis do. I have 2 black and white females. the most loving dogs I have ever had..they are sweet as sugar..one looks like a shih tzu and the other is Maltese. They have totally different personalities but get along so well together, and with the Pekingese I have too. Maggie has the long thick hair, and Chloe has thin semi-long hair, beautiful but they do shed...not all year around but when they do it's because they tend to go through an itchy state for some reason..I have had test done and every year is the same..but it doesn't really show on them, just the floor and it's not fleas... it looks like tumble weeds around here..BUT they are worth it a hundred times over. this is a great breed mix...if your thinking of getting one then you won't be disappointed...

QUESTION: I am getting a mal-shi and mum has to go to work. I have to go to school. Would we come home and see the furniture ruined? We dont wont to go and lock him in a room
Anonymous - 1/8/2011 5:32:11 AM
Respond to Question
Mal-Shi's appreciate routine. My Mal-Shi ceased peeing on the carpet with the "nose-in-the-poop" a couple of times and she stopped. I also crated her when I was gone and this was the key to her understanding her "zone" and "space" in the house. Once she figured her crate was a safe place and peeing outside brought treats and praise, she pretty much settled into the routine and has not peed in the house since (that was 4 years ago). Good Luck!

Respond to Question
I just got a new Malshi and I love her so much! No, they will not rip up your furniture if you provide chewing toys for them. This is true for all dogs because their teeth are falling out and need something hard to chew on (I reccomend Flossies). They are a great family dog and everyone in my family loves her and she loves them. We have another dog as well, who is very territorial, and they get along fine. I would reccomend socialization from birth, as this helps with all breeds. My Malshi is extremely easy to potty train and after a couple of weeks she is almost accident-free. They eat as puppies 1/4 cup (well atleast with my dog). She is part minature (her maltese mom was a mini), and will only get to 6lbs full grown. Hope this helps! Good luck!
Anonymous - 4/15/2011 6:30:05 PM
My malshi does like to eat shoes and would probably like to tear up furniture. She is bad to take socks/paper and tear them up, but only to be playful.

MKal-Shi's are good with other dogs, cats and children. Very very loving dog. Ours eats dry and can mix about two cups a day and she stays fit easy to potty trian needs grooming

QUESTION: We just bought a well kept malshi about a week ago from large pet store and she is 11 weeks old and kicking. We are training her well and she is such a good dog but I had a question about her well being...She is in good health but sometimes randomly(maybe after playing) she starts breathing, and panting really heavily and ryhmic through her nose. Almost like strong exhales. I was just curious is that normal? And what is it exactly and why does she do it?
Anonymous - 11/20/2010 12:05:11 AM

It could be your malshis trachea collapsing. It's common in small dogs. Normally this occurs more in pure bred dogs that have been overbred.

QUESTION: Do all Malshi puppies have their dew claws removed and their tails docked? Do they cost more if they do?
Anonymous - 11/14/2010 12:01:19 PM
Respond to Question
it depend on who you get the dog from. Some people prefer it, some dont. Some Malshi's actually have problems with their dew claws. My dog doesnt have his tail docked (ive never seen 1 with its tail docked) but his dew claws are removed. I would guess it costs more becuse it costs money to have them removed, but im not 100% sure on that.
Anonymous - 3/8/2011 11:24:32 PM
No Malshi's dont!!! It's inhumane. It's totally unnecessary to dock any dogs tail and all of the Malshi's I know have kept their tails and their dew claws. Same with Cats and declawing... leave them alone.
