Overview

The Yorkshire Terrier is a lovely lap dog that much prefers to be held on their owner's lap all day. They have a dose of attitude combined with a bright and playful nature. The Yorkshire Terrier is a true and loyal companion.

Character

This dog is intelligent, lively, and fearless. They focus entirely on their owner and are extremely affectionate. It has been said that a Yorkshire Terrier requires more human companionship and attention than any other breed.

Temperament

The Yorkshire Terrier can be territorial and likes to have their space respected. They are tolerant of older children if treated with care. The Yorkshire Terrier can also be somewhat independent and assertive. They get along well with other pets.

Care

The Yorkshire Terrier's coat requires daily grooming. The hair on top of the head, if grown long, is usually secured with a band or bow. However, if the Yorkshire Terrier is not being used for show, then the coat may be clipped short. Ears and eyes must be cleaned daily. Dental hygiene is also important.

Coat

The Yorkshire Terrier's coat is not coarse, but is fine and silky to the touch. Unlike other breeds, which have fur, the Yorkshire has hair that is growing constantly. They have no undercoat and do not shed.

Training

This breed is quick to learn. However, they may become willful in which case training of any kind can become difficult. Training must have consistency and firmness. They do not like to be ignored, so lots of praise will bring out the best in their training.

Activity

The Yorkshire Terrier requires minimal exercise. They are suited for short walks and ideal for apartment living or homes with small yards. They love to chase shadows, lay in sunbeams, and tug of war. The more attention this breed receives the better.

The dog comes to us every day when they are at work, and so we got a yorkie puppy on Friday. He doesn't get along with our female yorkie puppy at all!! He pulls her on her tail, eats out of her food bowl as if it is his, not making space for her next to him, but another thing, her bowl is in the same place where his is when he is being "baby sit" at us. And it just is as if he wants to show her this is my family, and my house! On sunday I went to their place with the yorkie, same story there, keeps on biting her, although its softly, it definitely is not play! and then he even urined on her!!! pied!!! please tell us what we can do!!! I am so desperate. she was born 4 December 2011 and the male whippet 23 December 2011!!

QUESTION: I am thinking of getting a Yokie puppy as a companion for my small 9 yr old Chow mix- When she was young she raised a MinPin. They got along great until he hit puberty. He fell in love with her... wouldn"t leave her alone even after he was fixed. They still see eachother occassionally but he wears her out with the barking and pestering. QUESTION: can a yorkie puppy eat the same food as an irish setter puppy

Anonymous - 1/13/2012 7:35:49 PM

Respond to Question

No offense, but don't listen to the person who said feed them "Yorkie food" No such thing, the answer is yes unless the food for the Irish Settler says "Large Breed Puppy Food", If it does get food that says "Small breed puppy food" ..But if the food for the Irish Settler food doesn't say anything about Large Breed and it's just a regular size of kibble-bites, go ahead and feed them the same food, just make sure you don't feed them different age groups like don't feed a puppy "Senior Dog Food" 'cause that wouldn't be appropriate! Good Luck and hope I helped.

QUESTION: My wife and I are thinking of getting a Yorkie. We have two issues. First the dog will spend lots of time on a sailboat. Do they have issues with motion sickness. Second, can they be trained for a pad when out on the boat and to the door when at home?

Anonymous - 1/9/2012 8:53:47 PM

Respond to Question

Yorkie's are easy to train to the pad, but it will take work for them to know only to use it on the boat. It's easiest to train them to a pad when they are young, if they learn to only go outdoors at a young age it's hard for them to understand that the pad is okay. I would teach them to use the pad but keep it right by the door, any time you see the dog going to it take them outside. Then as it gets older you would be able to take the pad away at home. My puppies usually get a bit of motion sickness their first few trips, but if you start them young and get them used to it they will be fine.

QUESTION: I am a truck driver, and I make it home about every two weeks +/-. Is a Yorkie a good dog to take for company? If so, why is it so hard to find a gold and silver mixed colored one, or even just one that looks healthy?

Anonymous - 1/6/2012 10:15:57 AM

Respond to Question

All of my yorkies love riding and going places. A good long walk once or twice a day can more than meet their exercise requirements. Yorkie puppies are born black with a little tan, and the lighter colors come in with age. There are way too many poorly bred yorkies being produced. Many of them are sick and will become sick later. By finding a good breeder you can avoid these problems, but you do have to be willing to pay.

rollinhranch - 1/10/2012 12:41:35 PM

I would say no because the little yorkie angel we have is very very active and would be hard to handle in a truck for long periods of time

If you put a leash on your yorkie and every time he/she thinks about going to the bathroom, pull them outside, they will learn fast and treat them so they know that they did good.

My Vet said to take her outside, let her sniff and what ever. Then when she comes in count to 20 and take her back outside she will potty then.

QUESTION: I have a Yorkie she is like the ordinary terrier - loving, very good, and trained...we just brought a new German Shepherd puppy home(10 weeks) they haven't paid each other much attention..he tries to play with her a little, is mostly shy around her and she just ignores him kinda. When my Yorkie is on me and my German Shepherd comes up to me she shows her teeth them sometimes snaps at him..she does it also sometimes when he comes in her space..how do I break her from these actions? How do I get them to be comfortable with each other?

Respond to Question

Tap your yorkie and say no no no no no

Anonymous - 12/28/2011 11:44:25 PM

Your yorkie is showing dominance. Basically to her there is a new dog in her territory and add to the fact he is a puppy. She is showing him that she is in charge and that she is top dog. When the puppy reaches adolescence they will be a slight balancing act of who is top dog. Just reassure your yorkie that you still love her and encourage playtime together. Let her have her space as well and watch the signs.

QUESTION: OUR 10 YEAR OLD YORKIE HAS TO BE BATHED EVERY OTHER DAY, SHE GETS FLAKEY SKIN AND RED SKIN ALSO AN ODOR ABOUT HER, NO ONE SO FAR CAN TELL US WHAT THE PROBLEM IS- NOT EVEN THE VET

Anonymous - 12/17/2011 12:49:21 PM

Respond to Question

My Yorkie had the same flaky problem. After lots of different shampoo and changing the diet I found a tip that has worked after just two baths (7 to 10 days apart). You use Dial clear antibacterial hand soap, mix with equal parts of white vinegar. Bathe and dry. You should see a difference after the first bath. Keep it up and you will be amazed with the drastic results. I bathe all my dog with this mixture now and I think they smell better for longer periods of time. Good luck!

Anonymous - 1/8/2012 11:26:42 PM

I worked as a groomer and I saw this alot sometimes this is something that they just get its like their bodies are rejecting their skin. I would give her a fish oil pill every day. That helps with the shine. Dont bathe as much even though you think you are helping that is actually hurting her more. Have her hair cut short on her body and use a medicated shampoo with tar in it. Let it set on her for about 10 mins and only bathe her 1 time a week it will take a little bit but it should work and watch what food you are feeding her. Feed her Blue(dark blue bag) it does wonders for their skin it will take about 3 months but you should see a new dog. Good luck

QUESTION: Can someone tell me the difference between a yorkie and a Silky??

Anonymous - 12/12/2011 2:12:57 PM

Respond to Question

A pet quaity Yorkie does resemble a Silky Terrier.

leemct - 12/21/2011 12:20:16 PM

A silky is a different breed, they are colored similiar but silkies are usually bigger. You can go to the AKC web page and look at the breed standards for both of them. A yorkie should have a coat of hair that will grow to drag the ground, one bred correctly should have lots of hair.

rollinhranch - 12/21/2011 10:50:37 AM

Silky has more long hair most yorkies have a minumum of hair

Your yorkie probably needs something to chew on. You could try chew toys or rawhide bones although rawhide bones can block up his stomach. There are healthier alternatives to rawhide that you can find in the pet store.

QUESTION: We just got a 2yr old yorkie who has been shuffled back and forth to like 3 homes she is very hyper and we already have a 90lb dog and 30lb dog is this gonna wok or not? They are refusing to play w her and they just aren't meshing together what should we do? How do we calm her down?

Anonymous - 11/26/2011 12:49:04 PM

Respond to Question

We had a Yorkie for twelve years. Most often large dogs, from our experience, do not play with little dogs. I think the constant barking does get on their nerves and you really have a "terrible twos" age thing going on. Either get another little one to play with your Yorkie, or don't worry about it. They usually entertain themselves. Good luck.

Anonymous - 12/7/2011 5:07:39 PM

The most important thing to do is to have patience and give your yorkie some time to adjust. She might just be "acting out" like a child would do in the same situation. Ask your vet if there is a certain kind of dog food that will help difuse the hyper activity. With the other dogs... make sure you are giving them plenty of attention so they won't feel "replaced" by the new addition.

QUESTION: I have a question, I really what to get a baby girl yorkie but I have a Cocker Spaniel and he is very jealous, so what should I do?!?! Oh and I really want to know how do you know when your baby yorkie is purebred?!

Anonymous - 11/22/2011 6:36:44 PM

Respond to Question

A purebred Yorkie should be registered. AKC is the most well known. Also, UKC and CKC are notable kennel clubs. As far as another dog is concerned: time and patience. Also, don't leave them together without supervision until they get to know each other. Your Cocker Spaniel might threatened by the new puppy and could accidentally harm her.

QUESTION: i have an 11 week old yorkie and she wont eat. i set her food out and she refuses it. I feel like i have to hand feed her so she will eat. i have tried to drizzle alpo gravy over it and mixed in turkey/gravy baby food but still doesnt eat much at all. i am going off of 3/4 cup per day and she doesnt even eat half that. any suggestions?

Anonymous - 11/19/2011 7:21:27 PM

Respond to Question

I have a 2yr old yorkie, 6 lbs. They really don't eat a ton of food. My Zoe eats about a 1/2 cup a day. My vet says that's fine, they will eat when they get hungry, as long as their health checks out ok.

Anonymous - 1/18/2012 8:50:33 PM

Dont feed your dog off the table.. a quality dog food with a protein listed as a number one ingredient is a must. Yorkies are prone to liver shunt, & liver stones. Small dogs can develop pancreatic problems which cause poor digestion due to failure to secret digestive enzymes. Feed your dog only quality food.. to prevent health problems down the road. Eventually she will get hungry enough to eat.

Anonymous - 1/4/2012 5:16:01 PM

I have a 3yr old yorkie..they really don't eat much...I give a handful in the morning and maybe in evening will give another if it's gone...but she loves Mcdonald's VERY small pieces or she'll choke...I only feed her "blue" or royal canine...a bag last us 5+months...good luck

Anonymous - 11/30/2011 11:23:23 PM

How big is your yorkie? 3/4 a cup is probably more than most of mine eat at that age. She needs to be gaining weight and if she doesn't eat she can get hypoglycemia, so make sure that you watch her closely. Some puppies just like to eat a few bites, then come back and eat a few more.
