Overview

The Yorkshire Terrier is a lovely lap dog that much prefers to be held on their owner's lap all day. They have a dose of attitude combined with a bright and playful nature. The Yorkshire Terrier is a true and loyal companion.

Character

This dog is intelligent, lively, and fearless. They focus entirely on their owner and are extremely affectionate. It has been said that a Yorkshire Terrier requires more human companionship and attention than any other breed.

Temperament

The Yorkshire Terrier can be territorial and likes to have their space respected. They are tolerant of older children if treated with care. The Yorkshire Terrier can also be somewhat independent and assertive. They get along well with other pets.

Care

The Yorkshire Terrier's coat requires daily grooming. The hair on top of the head, if grown long, is usually secured with a band or bow. However, if the Yorkshire Terrier is not being used for show, then the coat may be clipped short. Ears and eyes must be cleaned daily. Dental hygiene is also important.

Coat

The Yorkshire Terrier's coat is not coarse, but is fine and silky to the touch. Unlike other breeds, which have fur, the Yorkshire has hair that is growing constantly. They have no undercoat and do not shed.

Training

This breed is quick to learn. However, they may become willful in which case training of any kind can become difficult. Training must have consistency and firmness. They do not like to be ignored, so lots of praise will bring out the best in their training.

Activity

The Yorkshire Terrier requires minimal exercise. They are suited for short walks and ideal for apartment living or homes with small yards. They love to chase shadows, lay in sunbeams, and tug of war. The more attention this breed receives the better.

QUESTION: Does it matter what size a male is to a female when they planning to breed them? I was told that a female Yorker Terrier needs to be the same size or larger than the male, is this true. By size does this mean in inches or weight? Thanks!

Anonymous - 5/5/2012 8:10:45 PM

Respond to Question

If your female is on the small side (under 5 pounds) or you've never bred before, or it's the female's first litter I would make sure the male was smaller, both in height and weight. I wouldn't go with a male more than a pound over the female's weight even if none of the above apply.

QUESTION: I have been offered a yorkie from my sister in-law and I am thinking of getting her, but I am 8-5 working person, can they be kept in crate until i come home to walk her?

Anonymous - 4/30/2012 4:20:52 PM

Respond to Question

If your yorkie is an adult it should be fine. If it's a puppy it will need to go more often than that. You can keep them in a bigger pen with the puppy pads for a puppy, until it gets big enough to hold it that long.

rollinhranch - 5/1/2012 11:30:29 AM

Yes they can, but they do not enjoy it , yorkies love attention so being left alone for a long period of time each day would brother your Yorkie

QUESTION: Has anyone heard of a standard sized Yorkie? My mother was given one. He weighs about 17 lbs., stands about 18 in. at the shoulder, with a silver body and gold head. I had never heard of a standard Yorkie, but the vet confirms it. Are they rare?

Anonymous - 4/28/2012 10:38:31 AM

Respond to Question

The breed standard for yorkie is 7 pounds and under. There are bigger yorkies out there, my very first one is 15 pounds. They aren't really that rare. Yorkies used to be a bigger breed of dog and were bred down in size, sometimes a bigger puppy will pop up. All of the names like teacup, miniature, standard, etc that are used to describe size aren't official terms.

QUESTION: I have a 3 yr old Yorkie and a 4 yr old Chihuahua-Terrier mix. We had our Chihuahua-Terrier mix for a year and half before we got our little yorkie. They played real well together at first and for about the past year and half our Yorkie wants to fight with our chihuahua-terrier mix and we don't understand why because they used to get along well. We have to keep our yorkie locked up away from the chihuahua-terrier because when she bites her she draws blood. But we have also found out that our Yorkie was abused before we got her, could this be a reason for her behavior and what can I do to stop this behavior? Please Help!

Respond to Question

Check to see if your yorkie does this around meal time or when there is food available. I have 2 yorkies that were raised together, but as they became adult dogs, one became protective of her food and would snap at the other. Hope this helps.

QUESTION: how do you potty train yorkie puppies?

Anonymous - 4/17/2012 6:07:45 PM

Respond to Question

Put your yorkie puppy on a schedule, if you can take them out every two hours that works great, keep them in a crate when you aren't able to watch them closely, don't let them wander around unsupervised, especialy if they haven't just been outside. If you aren't able to take them out that often I like using the exercise pens that are four feet by four feet and using puppy pads. Put a bed, food, and water on one end and the pad on the other. The biggest thing is to not let them have enough freedom to have accidents. You can start taking them outside every three hours and so on as they get older.

Any suggestions to increase her interest. She has never been a dog that wants to be held or loved. Think she was taken from her mother too soon. Also she seems to be experiencing a sudden collapsed shoulder at times when on walks. We love her but at wits end.

QUESTION: how old does a male yorkie have to be to get a female pregnant? My male is 5 moths old and my female was in heat and daughter left him out with her when we were not home and she said they locked together - im worried because she weighs 3 pounds and he weighs 8 can he get her pregnant?

Anonymous - 4/14/2012 2:58:10 PM

Respond to Question

Also if you don't have her spayed I would talk to the vet about just having a planned c-section if she's pregnant. They can do an ultrasound or blood test about 30-40 days after breeding so you know for sure. X-Rays at about day 55 can help to know how big the puppies are if she's pregnant.

rollinhranch - 4/16/2012 11:34:59 AM

He's a little young, but it's possible, especially since the bigger yorkies seem to develop faster than the smaller ones. For her safety you should really take her and get her spayed, it would be risky to let a girl that size have puppies even with a male her size.

QUESTION: I have a 10 week old yorkie male, I have been feeding him a Purina puppy dry food. Is there a specific dry food for yorkies and is there a time when you can mix a soft food with the dry for them?

Anonymous - 3/3/2012 2:42:20 PM

Respond to Question

My yorkie is 10 weeks old and I have her on a brand called Royal Canine. It is made for yorkie puppies that are up to 10 months old and then they have one for them that's 10 months and older. It is usually sold at Petco or Petsmart. She loves it.

Anonymous - 5/22/2012 2:01:52 AM

I have a 1 yr 3month old yorkie poo, "Buddy". I got him at 8wks and my mother, a vet tech, bought him Performatrin, which i have kept him on since then....except the one time i was kinda broke so i bought him purina puppy chow. yes, he LOVED it, but i found he pooped at least twice as much, if not 3 times! When i got my paycheck, lol, i put him back on the performatrin. At pet valu where you can find that brand, i happened to say in passing that he pooped too much on the purina and was told that it was because the cheaper but more common brands pass right thru them, they are not absorbing the nutrients from the food as well as on the pet store brand. makes sense right? Now i save the rest of the purina for a treat or for back up if i run low on his regular food. Buddy is 11 pounds, and goes thru a $20 bag of food (8lb bag, 3.63kgs) approx every two months. I recommend a small breed dog food from your local pet store, recommended by someone with knowledge on the subject.

Anonymous - 3/17/2012 3:40:51 PM

Check out dogfoodadvisor.com Purina isn't the best choice. A yorkie eats so little food it's really not much more expensive to feed them a good food, and it can prevent health problems down the road. Dry food is better for their teeth, and if you give too much canned food they can get picky and not want to eat the dry.

QUESTION: If a mother yorkie is only 4 lbs and the dad is 10lbs, how big do you think my male will get? and when do they stop growing?

Anonymous - 2/24/2012 8:35:39 PM

Respond to Question

A yorkie puppy could be the size of the mom, the size of the dad, or even bigger or smaller than the parents. They are usually pretty close to their adult size at 6 months, and will fill out and gain more weight until 8-12 months.

rollinhranch - 2/28/2012 9:40:48 AM

The size of the parents don't have as much to do with the adult size of the puppy as people think. The size of the grandparents and great grandparents also effects the puppy size. You can triple the weight at 8 weeks, and double the weight at 12 weeks for a rough idea.

QUESTION: my yorkie has lots of black on her will she get lighter as she gets older, she is 8 weeks now?

Anonymous - 2/15/2012 12:11:19 AM

Respond to Question

my yorkie was also his lighter colors came in, as he got older..

Anonymous - 4/10/2012 12:51:30 AM

What color are her parents? They will usually get lighter, and according to the yorkie breed standard they should. Some will stay black. If one of the parents is black it adds to the chance, but two of the blue/gold yorkies can have a puppy that stays black. The black coats are usually cottony feeling instead of the silky coat.

QUESTION: I really want a female Yorkie, but I am leaning more towards the male because I have heard horror stories about menstral (for lack of a better word) in female dogs.I have heard they wear diapers and all other things, please help clear things up for me......thanks

Anonymous - 2/6/2012 10:29:44 PM

Respond to Question

keep in mind that male Yorkies, like all male dogs, lift their leg to pee. Because of that their heir always smells of pee... unless of course you tie the hair in a bow lol

Anonymous - 2/10/2012 3:14:13 PM

If you get the female fixed you won't have any of those problems. Unfixed males can pee to mark their territory in the house, I've never had one who doesn't. So as long as either gender is fixed you will be fine.
