Overview

The West Highland White Terrier is typically referred to as a Westie. They originated in Scotland in the middle of the 19th century to control the population of fox, otter, and other animals and rodents. The Westie is now primarily a companion pet.

Character

The West Highland White Terrier is hardy and compact, spirited and well adjusted. They have attained the status of being one of the most popular breeds. They are intelligent and usually display good manners. The Westie is playful but can also be quiet and determined.

Temperament

The Westie is energetic and spunky. They are devoted to their family, but are not very interested in being cuddled. They alert to danger by barking and are good watchdogs. The Westie is a wonderful family pet that prefers to be the only pet in the home. They get along with children over the age of ten who are well behaved. They can be demanding and assertive, and exhibit true terrier traits. They have a tendency to snap when irritated. The West Highland White Terrier is a social, fun loving breed that does best in an active and attentive household.

Care

The West Highland White Terrier 's double coat requires brushing twice weekly. They also require having their coat professionally stripped at least two times per year. They should only be bathed when necessary, as they are prone to dry skin. The Westie may be susceptible to deafness, patella luxation, and allergies.

Coat

The West Highland White Terrier is a double coat breed. The outer coat is straight, harsh and wiry. The under coat is close, fluffy, and soft. Their coat is brilliant white in color and lends to this breed an elegant look. They are moderate shedders.

Training

The West Highland White Terrier must be trained beginning at an early age especially in the area of socialization. They respond best to love and gentle guidance. As with most all Terrier breeds, harsh methods of training are met with stubbornness. The Westie is usually open to obedience training provided it is done fairly and consistently.

Activity

The West Highland White Terrier loves to run and explore. They are not suited for apartment living, as they are easily excitable. This high-energy breed needs at least an hour of exercise daily. The Westie must have ample yard space that is securely fenced as they have a propensity to dig. They love to engage in rough and tumble play with older children and have the stamina to do so for lengthy periods of time.

QUESTION: Hi I just have a few questions about westies :) do they regularly shed? Are they diggers( because if I were to buy one I would have to secure my fence)? How much do they cost? Are they good watch dogs? Can they settle into two different places? What are they like inside the house alone....are they well behaved and are they potty trained?? Thank you so much!!!!! (: this is a huge help!

Anonymous - 2/17/2012 6:33:22 PM

Respond to Question

Westie's are non shedding. Will dig if left alone outside. Cost range between 400 up to 3,000 depending on breeding. Good watch dog as far as letting you know when anyone comes around. If left alone you may want to kennel train. You would have to potty train. They are easy to potty train. They are well behaved but like to jump up on everyone.

QUESTION: I'm 13 years old and my parents are thinking about getting me a dog. I like the Westie and also the Border Terrier. I was wondering if the Westie will sleep with you, and also if won't bite or snap too much. Thank you!

Anonymous - 7/7/2011 3:24:53 PM

Respond to Question

My Westie Duncan (also!) sleeps in the bed with me but does not crave contact. If I touch him, he will move to another part of the bed! He has only snapped at me when I am too much in his face or make a growling noise while I'm playing. I think it's playful, but he has bit my lip.

Anonymous - 12/8/2011 3:26:39 PM

My Westie Duncan would sleep on my head or between my legs. He would not go to sleep without me. Westies that I have had (2) become so loyal to you that they normaly seem to bond to one person more than anyone. So if you play withyour westie and show them love. then they will be your best friend and yes they will love to sleep with you. Also they will sleep on heater vents or anywhere warm they can rest there bare belly on because they have no fur there. so thats also a reason they love to snuggle with people. With a westie you will not be dissapointed.

Anonymous - 8/20/2011 12:50:49 AM

Westies love to sleep with someone. I have never raised a westie that bites or snaps. I have had families allow the dogs to boss them around as puppies and they could become snappy, but its been very rarely, and always someone who has allowed the puppy to do what it wants when it wants from the begining. To have a terrier, any terrier (plus many other types of dogs too) you need to be the alpha, not the dog. Watch Cesar Milan "The Dog Wisperer" on TV. They are very easy to train, fun and very loving. They are smart enough to train you if your not careful. The Art of Raising a Puppy, by the Monks of New Skeet is an excellent book on training or any breed of dog.

I have two westies one is a year old and sleeps with the granddaughter. She is very lively and sleeps until the granddaughter gets up. Granddaughter is 14 and sleeps late. Our other westie is 8 mths and has been sick since we bought her. she's very different although sleeps with me she will snap and depending how she feels she is quiet. We had westies when we were kids and they all slept with us and their personalities were all very different. They are loyal but busy dogs.

QUESTION: We live in Margate, Fl. and I know nothing about breeders, etc. Friends say to stay away from puppy mills. Don't know what that is as to me it has to start somewhere. Please help my husband and I to locate "Ceasar" like on the purple dog food bag. He is all white, and we prefer a female, but that is ok if not. We want all white and very, very small. We plan to have him groomed regular and cut just like "Cesar." We are alone now and the company and love we have to offer is great. Many thanks!

Anonymous - 7/6/2011 10:25:52 PM

Respond to Question

I agree with the other response. Westies are normally 12 to 20 pounds, tiny is not right for a westie. If you cant visit the breeder in person ask for references from other people who have adopted a dog from them, and/or their vet. A puppy mill is someone who breeds dogs strickly for profit with no reguard to the care, health or wellfare of the dogs they have. Such as; tiny dirty cages, matted so bad the dogs cant see, illness or injury not treated by a vet, ect. They also often dont care about the quality of the dog as long as it has puppies they breed it.

lgrench - 7/17/2011 8:37:35 AM

"Ceasar" is a West Highland White Terrier, "Westie" for short. I have a Westie. Strong willed dogs. You need to get one from a reputable breeder for its health. I suggest-go online to the "West Highland White Terrier Club of America", read up. Get name of "Westie Rescue" person in area, call her/him. Ask questions, offer to babysit one a few days, see if this breed of dog is for you. Find out who is a good breeder in your area-- for a healthy, happy dog. Good luck. Westies are wonderful, they are not tiny, are very independent; do not like to sit on laps long. Are affectionate, but want their space. My Westie loves me so much she follows me around the house all day, but she wants her own bed.

Anonymous - 7/16/2011 8:23:52 PM

Very, very small is not a likely westie to start with. Breeding to the smaller dog can cause health problems. As far as puppy mills, you should be able to go to the breeders home, check on the cleanliness, care of the dogs, get a feel for the breeder. Are they knowledgeable about the breed, do they act like they care for the dogs or just want to get them sold. Do your homework, learn about the breed before you decide you want one. They are cute and wonderful little dogs, but can be stubborn to train if you aren't consistent; they need grooming regularly to stay healthy and happy; and they need time and attention to be the kind of dog in the commercial. As a breeder, I check on the homes they are going to, who they will live with, what kind of care they will be given, and how knowledgeable the buyer is to the best of my ability. Every one of the pups is part of my family from day one, and I want them to have a wonderful life with their new family.

QUESTION: We rescued a sick Westie puppy from a puppy mill pet shop. The vet has been treating her for pneumonia and what seems to be an immune deficiency since her response to antibiotics has been minimal - although after 4 months she is finally improving. She eats dry dog food and we can get her to eat some baby food. Other than that she will eat nothing else. Her weight is a concern she still only weighs 5lbs 9 oz. Any suggestions? Thankyou Susan

Anonymous - 7/5/2011 11:13:39 AM

Respond to Question

I dont know what kind of dry food you feed. Your Westie would benefit from an excellent quality brand like Holistic Select or one of the organic ones. Without a blood test there is no way to know what she is allergic too. It can be any meat, grain, tree, grass, ect, or nothing at all. The pneumonia may have damaged her lungs as a baby or she may have a genetic disorder/disease yet undiagnosed, or allergies adding to her problems. Her weight doesnt mean as much as her condition (if she feels boney or solid.) If shes thin a TBSP extra animal fat daily with quality dry food may help.

lgrench - 7/17/2011 8:24:55 AM

Try chicken , lamb or duck jerky. It wil have no allergens and may help your westie gain a little weight. Due to her conditions before you got her, she may never be full size.

QUESTION: We have three wonderful Westies--a mom age 12, a dad age 6, and their daughter age 5. Someone has offered to give us a chocolate lab puppy (still nursing at this time). All the lab owners say that Labs get along with all humans and beasts, especially when socialized as puppies. My concern is whether or not my pack will accept the lab puppy--especially when she outgrows them in a few months time. Does anyone have experience socializing multiple Westies with a larger breed of dog? Hope to hear that it has worked out fine!

Anonymous - 6/15/2011 7:37:16 PM

Respond to Question

We have several large breed pet dogs and westies. 2 Cane corsos, german shepherd, American bull dog, and daughter has a pit bull that visits. The westies that like to play with dogs love to play with the big dogs and all our westies adore the big dogs. Since the lab is a puppy it would be like introducing any other puppy to a group. They wont mind that it grows huge once they adjust to the "funny" color. My westies dont hardly notice a new westie but very much notice other colored/marked dogs.

lgrench - 7/17/2011 8:15:00 AM

westies love other animals just slowly associate the animals with each other and im sure they will do great and if your still un comfterable bringing in a lab ask if you can bring it hime for a week and see how it gets along with your little pack

QUESTION: Are their two different kind of coats for westies? (wire coat and smooth coat possibly?)

Anonymous - 6/14/2011 9:31:31 PM

Respond to Question

Simple answer: only one coat, but some westies are smoother than others. If you clip the hair it will smooth out. If you hand strip it then it will have a wire coat. Breeders that breed for smooth coats breed for the wrong reasons!!!!

Anonymous - 2/12/2012 2:42:56 PM

Westies only come with one kind of coat choice but the quality of the coat varies greatly. Westies have a double coat, the outer hairs are suppose to be coarse and longer, with a soft undercoat that is shorter. Some poor quality dogs have so little coat they look like a scruffy wire coated dog and others are so soft or curly and they can matt. A normal coat is coarse to the touch and grows minimum 2 to 4 inches long.check AKC.org for the breed standard.how they are clipped or stripped will make them look totaly different. You may have seen one clipped really short, looks like a short coated dog.

lgrench - 7/17/2011 7:47:21 AM

Technically Westies should only have wire coats. But some breeders are trying to breed softer coats (why--I do not know). I have three Westies--a mom and dad and their daughter). The dad is the only one with a real Westie wire coat. The girls have softer coats, but two of the litter mates had rough coats--all three puppies from the soft-coated Mom and the wire-coated dad. Of course we love them all --it is the best breed !!

QUESTION: does a westie get along with cats because im trying to persuade my mum to get a westie but shes so attached to our cat like me but she wont have one if they dont get along

Anonymous - 5/31/2011 3:11:52 PM

Respond to Question

in my house there are 1 westie and .... 8 cats! Morning (my dog) as raised the kittens like her own babies and she is the babysitter for the older ones. Westies get along with other animals with no problem. Even when older you can introduce a baby cat or dog, of course it has to be done step by step, but they are great!

Anonymous - 4/21/2012 3:09:33 PM

We have lots of our westie puppies move into homes with cats, we also have cats. When they are raised around cats they do very well. If they are a pup with a strong hunting drive they may pester the cat so a more mellow westie puppy would be better. Training and proper socilization are always important.

QUESTION: It says to "professionally strip your westie atleast twice a year" I was wondering if this cost any money? Like do you just go to the vet and they'll strip it for you for free? I'm afraid it'll cost like $100 each time. x.x

hikurashi83 - 5/25/2011 5:31:26 PM

Respond to Question

Our westies have never had to be stripped. Both of our westies lived full and happy lives. From the time they were pups to adults we took them to petsmart every month for a clip sometimes every other month. If you keep them maintained they do not shed and have a beautiful coat. I would reccoment keeping there coat as a "puppy cut" and in the winter months buying a sweater for them. Mine loved his sweater and would take it off at night when we slept and would pick it up and bring it to me in the morning. I loved that dog. But If you keep there coat clean and beautiful you will have no problems.

Anonymous - 8/20/2011 12:56:39 AM

Westies do not have to be stripped, it would cost money to have it done and costs more then just clipping. They can be clipped instead of stripped if you dont show conformation. You can also learn to do the grooming yourself or some people even like the natural shaggy look. Even left long and natural westies are very easy to brush and comb out and rarely tangle.

QUESTION: i want to adopt a westie and i would like to know how much would a adopted westie cost and do westies perfer dry food or canned food?

Anonymous - 4/30/2011 12:51:38 PM

Respond to Question

Cost of a westie varies greatly, te saying "you get what you pay for" can apply for long term health of your westie. In general most dogs prefer good canned food, but dry is much better for their teeth and they like it just fine. Just like children may prefer to eat cake and ice cream but regular food is better for them.

Anonymous - 4/17/2011 9:02:05 AM

It depends where you buy it. When we got our westie, it cost $150.00, and we got it from the Humane Center in Jordan.

Anonymous - 5/23/2011 9:52:35 AM

Prices are listed on next day pets. Quality westies from a reputable breeder usually cost more then pet quality westies. They know the health, temperment, and quality of the bloodlines they have and the better ones also do health testing through OFA and CERF like we do.

QUESTION: I am torn between getting a Westie or a Yorkie poo. Does anyone have any advice as to which is healthier, smarter etc???

Anonymous - 4/15/2011 2:47:06 PM

Respond to Question

I believe that no matter what kind of dog you get, you have to be mentally prepared and do some research on the breed before getiing one. Westies are all I have had for the past 20 years and I will have more if anything happens to Buddy or Beauregard. Yes, they have a mind of their own but you have to be stern and be the "Alpha Dog" from the very beginning. They are wonderful pets and 1 of mine definitely is a lap dog. You must be prepared for a non forgetting, persistent, loving, animal when you get a Westie.

Anonymous - 7/8/2011 5:01:11 PM

Westies are great dogs.I have had a male for seven years and he is a wonderful dog.the person that saya thy are hard to train is eight but disagree with them being impossible to Tarin.my dog name is general and I walk him everywhere I go without a leach.thy are very strong head dogs and you hbe to be very stern with them.once u so that and so is consistently u will have little problems.yes thy do have a very huge ego with their little bodies but are great dogs and I would trade him for no other.u constantly get compliments on his behavior when we are walking because he listen so well.

Anonymous - 5/17/2011 11:28:40 AM

Westies are difficult when pups. They are strong-willed and stubborn and training is almost non-existent. I've known many people who have given up on a Westie pup because they had a lap dog in mind and instead got a little terror. Be aware that these dogs, albeit cute as a button, are not lap dogs by any stretch of the imagination. Westies have an ego as big as all outdoors but owners who love these dogs and understand them wouldn't have it any other way- true Westie lovers anyway. Have patience and your dog will grow to be a fine little tough companion.

Anonymous - 4/29/2011 1:10:22 PM

A Westie is a lot smarter, but it depends on what type of dog you want-Westies love to play more than snuggle, and Yorkies are the opposite. Nice choice of terriers, though. They are all wonderful. If it were me, I'd choose a Westie.

Anonymous - 4/26/2011 6:40:05 PM

QUESTION: At what age will my Westie get his double coat?

Anonymous - 3/15/2011 2:16:37 PM

Respond to Question

Westies have double coats as babies before their eyes even open, it can be hard to see. The coarse outer gaurd hairs stick out and are longer, when you blow in the coat, or rub it backwards you will see many softer, shorter hairs between all the outer hairs. They do not get a full mature coat until 2 to 3 years of age, so the coat on some may seem short for awhile. Some pet quality westies may have a very skimpy or nonexsistant undercoat, or never develope the long full outer coat.

QUESTION: I am getting a Westie... female or male... which is better in temperament?... and I also have a Cockatiel...that I have had for 10 years.... what about that? I don't want to get rid of my Cockatiel of course!!

Anonymous - 3/2/2011 1:03:05 PM

Respond to Question

I have both a male and a female Westie (3 years old). The female is more aggressive (she is the Alpha dog) and is much more interested in chasing birds, squirrels and rabbits than the male, although he will participate if he sees her doing it. The only way I would recommend having a cockatiel with a Westie is if you introduce the dog to the bird when the dog is young and teach the dog not to hurt the bird, and to make sure that if the bird is ever out of the cage, you are there to supervise and watch out for it. I had a cockatiel that got out of its cage while we were out running errands and the dogs killed it. I don't blame the Westies for doing something that is instinctual, but you need to be aware that Westies were bred to hunt and they don't know the difference between a wild bird and a pet bird.

Anonymous - 10/16/2011 1:14:51 PM

It depends on the individual dog. Many people who have had both males and females , in westies, prefer the males temperment. They are often more tollerant of being accidently hurt then the females (such as by small children). I think they are also easier to train. We have chickens and the dogs learn not to bother the chickens, also has to do with individual dog. Some are intense hunters and some are very laid back. Raised with the cockatiel with proper training, a more laid back westies should be good. An intense hunter personality who has not been properly introduced and trained may kill the bird, but that is true for any hunting or guarding type breed.

lgrench - 4/20/2011 10:53:50 AM

Females tend to have the better temperament, especially if you have children. I have a ten year old Westie and 2 Cockatiels. She has never bothered my Cockatiels, in fact she is a little scared of them. They can be walking around on the floor, and my Westie leaves them completely alone.

QUESTION: How much should a male westie weigh at three and a half months?

Anonymous - 2/27/2011 6:24:58 PM

Respond to Question

It varies with how large the puppy will be as an adult, how many were in the litter, and if the puppy has had proper care, including but not limited to; parasites, type of food, temperature and proper vet care. 4 pounds for a pup who is going to be a small adult sized westie, has had poor care, or from a very large litter and up to 8 pounds for one who is from a small litter, growing very fast, or is going to be large. The question is more is he in good condition? cant feel his hip bones, spine is smoth, ribs feel pretty smooth, tummy round but not bloated.
