Overview

The Welsh Terrier is very friendly, intelligent, energetic, and outgoing making him a wonderful companion. This breed is not as energetic at most terriers, however is lively and makes a great catch companion.

Character

The Welsh Terrier has a great sense of humor and makes a good child's companion, given the child knows how to properly handle a dog with this level of energy. Long legged, this breed is an excellent jumper/hopper and will be sure to give everyone a good laugh.

Temperament

Intelligent, sweet, lively, and eager to please, the Welsh Terrier does well in a family environment. He is generally good around children providing the children to not overly pester, and does well with other animals. This breed should always be properly socialized at an early age.

Care

The Welsh Terrier should have at least weekly brushing to remove loose or dead hair. Regular bathing is not necessary, however a wipe down with a damp or dry washcloth should remove most dirt, if any. The beard of this breed should be cleaned regularly.

Coat

The Welsh Terrier has a very short coat. Resembling the coat of the Airedale Terrier, it is short, dense, hard, and wiry. The coat should always be close and abundant on this breed.

Training

Being a terrier and of high energy, this breed should always have a variety of training methods. A firm yet gentle hand is a must, and the handler should always remain consistent. Given the proper training, this breed does very well in obedience, agility, and flyball.

Activity

The Welsh Terrier is a very energetic breed, however he does do well in a home environment. A small yard is best as this breed loves to play catch and would do well in a fenced in yard. However, he can do well without a yard if given sufficient exercise.

QUESTION: At what age should you start hand stripping the coat on a welsh terrier in order to keep it in good condition?

QUESTION: Do the welsh terrior's bark a lot? a few sites say they may be yippy?

Anonymous - 10/1/2011 8:40:55 PM

Respond to Question

My Welshie is definitely a barker, but her bark is not likely to wake the neighbors. She sounds like a dog with laryngitis. We happen to live in an area roamed by coyotes and skunks in the dead of night, so my solution is to close off the "Doggie-Door" at midnight, and shut her in my room. She is very much aware that I am the Alpha Human in the House, so when she starts huffing, and I sternly say, "STOP IT NOW!" (in my best Darth Vadar Voice) she generally obeys, (after "huffing" a few times!) She is nowhere near as "yappy" as the mini-doxie in my House.

QUESTION: Are Welch Terriers diggers? How would a Welch Terrier and Wheaten Terrier get along? Both males? Male and female? We have a swimming pool. Would either breed be inclided to jump in?

Anonymous - 3/20/2011 6:44:28 PM

Respond to Question

My Welshie LOVES water, but she loves it in motion. I put in a Koi Pond this year, and she LOVES stalking the fish in the pond and fell in more than once, but her favorite thing to do is "Bite" at water flowing out of the hose when I try to water the plants, or hose off the patio furniture, or refill the pond. She is absolutely NUTS about water! I suspect your Welshie would be inclined to jump in, but after trying it out, would likely be "done" with it. A swimming pool would be BORING. Water out of a HOSE, on the other hand, would be invigorating!

we have a welch and a wheaten. the welsh gives the wheaten a good run for his money... the Welsh LOVES to swim.. the wheaton.. not so much...

QUESTION: Do Welsh Terriers shed at all?

Anonymous - 2/15/2011 7:22:06 PM

Respond to Question

Saying Welsh Terriers "don't shed" is misleading. They have curly, wiry hair. When they shed, it gets caught up and twisted in their curls. That's why they require brushing and grooming. I prefer grooming because brushing curly-haired tangles is not a pleasant experience for the Welshie or the owner!

MizzMinNM - 11/12/2011 11:37:33 PM

No Welsh Terriers are a hypoallergenic breed.
