Overview

The Samoyed proves to be a friendly and gentle breed, warming up to almost anyone. Very easy going, sweet, and beautiful, this breed takes kindly to almost all people. This breed does not do well as a guard or watch dog, however is highly intelligent.

Character

This is a very peaceful breed that tends to be very active. Very loyal, the Samoyed usually favors his master but will be friendly to most people. A very sociable breed, he is not only beautiful but makes a wonderful companion.

Temperament

This dog has the tendency to bark quite a bit, and will alert you when someone is approaching. Does not do well with smaller and more passive animals, but can do well with cats and other dogs. The Samoyed is very friendly and does well with children.

Care

The Samoyed has a very thick coat, which requires much grooming. They shed heavily during warmer seasons and should be regularly brushed. The coat of this dog tends to trap dirt, but with regular brushing it should release easily.

Coat

The Samoyed has a long and thick double coat and requires a lot of grooming. The outercoat should be harsher than the undercoat, but still fairly soft. Undercoat should be short, thick, and should have wool like texture.

Training

This breed can be very willful and stubborn when it comes to obedience training but will do well with firm, consistent, and patient training techniques. Variety is best as Samoyeds can have a low attention span.

Activity

The Samoyed does best in cooler climates, but will do okay in warmer weather. Proper exercise is required as this breed can be lively, but proper water and rests must be given as this breed has a wooly coat.

QUESTION: How long does it take to housebreak a Samoyed puppy?

Anonymous - 1/16/2012 5:49:14 PM

Respond to Question

It took us about a month. Each week we would make our Samoyed hold it a little longer, but by the end of the month he was using house broken. We used a bell hanging from the door, so every time we would take him out to pee we would make him hit his nose to the bell. He picked up what to do pretty quickly.

QUESTION: My Samoyed had went to the groomers and they advised my to shave him because of the matting. His stomach and but were bad but not the rest of him and I told them specifically not to shave him down completely. Well of course they shaved him down completely and I feel horrible now. It is fall now, and I want him to have at least some hair for the winter. Does anyone know how long it takes to grow back? Is he going to be bald for winter? I'm so upset

Anonymous - 9/28/2011 11:26:16 PM

Respond to Question

Coat will grow back completely in about 3months. I just had the same experience with my Sammy.

Anonymous - 11/10/2011 9:11:42 PM

My Samoyed had to get shaved as well, but it is almost back to full length now and it has only been about three months or so. so it shouldn't take too too long.

Anonymous - 11/8/2011 9:04:32 AM

They did the same with my dog, and it was horrible. But good news is that it does grow back. By the 3rd month he'll be back to super fluffy. The second month his hair will be about an akita length which was nice.

QUESTION: Do Samoyed's shed hair??

Anonymous - 8/29/2011 5:38:03 PM

Respond to Question

My whippet sheds more than my samoyed. A quick daily brush and I rarely see his hair....except when he molts in the spring. I send him to the vet for grooming then. It's great to she the groomer covered head to toe in white fluff. But at least it's not me!

Anonymous - 10/20/2011 11:21:51 AM

Yes, a lot! When we got our Samoyed, we were told they only shed twice a year, when they blow their coats in the beginning of summer and winter. But she sheds all year round, and in the summer months it is constant and in large clumps. We need to vacuum daily. I read that if you let them have a litter before they are fixed, that should help though.

QUESTION: we got a 2 yr old samoyed from a shelter. we bought 2 different dog foods recommended at petsmart but she doesn't touch it. she ate leftover chicken but we have a hard time feeding her. we walked 2 miles 2x a day but she does not eat much. what should we feed her?

Anonymous - 7/31/2011 3:32:53 PM

Respond to Question

Samoyeds tend to regulate their own food intake. Mine was the same way. Didn't eat well the entire first year we brought him home from the shelter. Keep offering him food. Salmon oil squirted on top of kibble really helps! Also, combining wet food with dry food, and then slowly decreasing the amount of wet (Canned) food helps!

QUESTION: is there a lap dog size of samoyed

Anonymous - 7/11/2011 12:34:32 AM

Respond to Question

Try a Miniature American Eskimo or Toy American Eskimo Dog.... Wonderful dog! Looks very, very similar to a Samoyed.

Anonymous - 11/26/2011 10:58:02 PM

We all wish, but no. All samoyeds grown up to way 70+ pounds and are usually 20-30 inches tall. While many samoyeds think they can crawl up on your lap, they cant. If you have ever seen the Cesar dog food commercial where the big dog sits on the girls lap, its exactly like that. These dogs are also prone to hip displasia so the idea of them jumping up onto a lap is not common. Hope this helps :)

QUESTION: Is a Samoyed a good dog with other dogs? Is it ok to have a male with another male dog?

Anonymous - 7/2/2011 10:15:14 AM

Respond to Question

Samoyeds go very well with any other type of animal and will mostly lie there and let the other animal like your samoyed to death. But when it comes to two male dogs in the house hold things can get a bit tricky. With two or more dogs there is always the need for an alpha. If you have one dog that is atleast 2+ or more years older than the dog, you will be fine. If you get two puppies/ young dogs who are about the same age then there will be a tension and much fighting for who becomes alpha in the home. Hope this helps :)

QUESTION: Is it okay to cut a samoyeds hair durning the warmer seasons?

Anonymous - 6/22/2011 4:45:19 PM

Respond to Question

luckily, if shaving is necessary because of matting, they do have doggy sunscreen, so your dog getting a skin disease if you take proper precautions is highly unlikely.

Anonymous - 11/8/2011 9:07:39 AM

Yes, its is perfectly normal to trim, i repeat trim a coat during warmer seasons, but never shave a samoyed. My family shaved our samoyed's fur all off a few summers ago and he got a HORRIBLE skin disease because their skin isnt meant for direct sun exposure. Hope this helps :)

Anonymous - 7/14/2011 3:05:13 PM

It is not a good idea to cut a samoyeds coat. The best thing you can do for them is make sure they are clean and groomed. If they shed their undercoat you can brush it out. Their hair helps to keep them cooler in the warmer months.

QUESTION: My family and I are liking the sound of the Samoyed breed of dog and were wondering if they can stay on their own for 7 hours, as kids at school and adults at work? thanks

Anonymous - 6/14/2011 4:11:54 AM

Respond to Question

Yes, my samoyed stays home for many hrs a day and he is perfectly fine because he knows when we come home that he can jump all over us and we are there to play with him. The first couple of times we left him alone he got into the markers and colored his face orange, it was something else, and he would cry as we left. That didnt last long and he began finding things to entertain his time with. Doggy doors are a must!! If you know that you will leave your dog alone for many hrs a day then place that doggy door right away! Hope this helps :)

Anonymous - 7/14/2011 3:10:24 PM

My Samoyed does, just give him a good walk in the morning (20 minutes at least) and let him out to relieve himself right before you leave the house. Also, provide good chew toys for him to chew on while you're gone and the dog should be fine.

Anonymous - 6/19/2011 11:19:07 AM

further to my blog. Samoyed's also need about 2 hrs run a day, a lot of grooming and also a puppy of any breed needs 4 to 7 meals a day and when you need to be around also to house train. A young samoyed left alone too long could cause damage. I have had 3 sams and I am a member of the samoyed assn in the UK

Anonymous - 6/18/2011 10:01:00 AM

all dogs are pack animals and need company. you are out of the house far too long for any dog at all. they would suffer from loneliness and extreme stress. no dog should be left alone more than 4 hrs a day.

QUESTION: how much grooming do Samoyeds need? how much do they shed? all year round or twice a year? thanx :P

Anonymous - 5/20/2011 7:38:47 PM

Respond to Question

I recommend brushing your samoyed atleast twice a week and investing in a dustpan :) These dogs shed and shed but it does clump and sticks to things so you can easily lint roll it off. Lint rollers are a must with samoyeds and you should buy them in bulk! Shedding is an all yr thing, but they shed twice as much right before summer so that they dont overheat. Hope this helps :)

Anonymous - 7/14/2011 3:13:30 PM

Shedding isn't so bad with the Samoyed breed because the fur clumps together unlike shorthaired dogs.

Anonymous - 6/27/2011 3:14:11 PM

It takes daily brushing and I noticed Samoyeds shed everyday but you don't want to wear black clothes because it will show. You won't have have too much shedding as long the dog gets groomed everyday

QUESTION: Why does a Samoyed do well with cats and not smaller dogs?

Anonymous - 5/19/2011 5:09:47 PM

Respond to Question

My samoyed had no problem with our small dog and I had my samoyed before I got my small dog, so they didn't grow up together. Samoyed can do well with a dog any size.

Anonymous - 6/11/2011 6:07:19 PM

QUESTION: how healthy are Samoyeds? what are the diseases this dog can have?

Anonymous - 4/30/2011 5:34:58 PM

Respond to Question

The samoyed breed is closest to a human because they can get pretty much any disease a human can. They cant get the common cold or the flu like a hamster can but they can be lactose intolerrant, DONT FEED THEM CHEESE, and some can get down syndrome. Most samoyeds can get hip dysplasia and arthrites (i dont think those are spelt right) and this can make walks less frequent and shorter distances. my dog has many of these problems but he is the sweetest most loving dog i have ever owned. Hope this helps :)

Anonymous - 7/14/2011 3:18:06 PM

Also glaucoma, watch their eyes closely. Any irritation, redness, swollen, discharge, cloudiness to the eyes-bring them to your vet immediately! Loss of vision can happen rapidly with glaucoma.

Anonymous - 6/19/2011 11:14:34 AM

Samoyeds are prone to diabetes, allergies.....so dont give sugar and salt

Anonymous - 5/15/2011 1:37:24 PM

QUESTION: Is it true you can not shave the Samoyed breed

Anonymous - 4/27/2011 6:13:34 PM

Respond to Question

Do not shave the Samoyed. It will ruin his coat (it will not grow back right) and it protects their skin from sunburn. It actually works as an insulator in the summer and helps to keep him cool. He should be de-shedded for the hot months but not shaved.

Anonymous - 6/19/2011 11:23:08 AM

You should never shave a Samoyed, except for minor trimming. Due to their thick fur, the skin is extremely sensitive, and should not even be touched with your fingers. Shaving down to the skin would allow all sorts of irritations causing the animal pain, make sunburn a serious health problem, and make them targets for insects that generally are unable to get through the fur. 10,000 hairs per square inch! That's a lot of protection. -Doc Caldwell

Anonymous - 5/22/2011 1:22:49 AM

Absolutely not. For the summer its best if you shave Samoyeds down so they dont get heat stroke. You can also shave them down if you dont want to deal with brushing them everyday.

QUESTION: What food should I give my Samoyed?

Anonymous - 4/25/2011 7:14:26 AM

Respond to Question

My samoyed eats everything, literally everything. The best thing that has worked for him are crutons (like the kind for salads) when we train him and as a snack he looooooves bread!! Veggies and cheese tho make him gassy and it isnt pleasent. Hope this helps :)

QUESTION: Would it be okay to get a Samoyed if I live in Texas?

Anonymous - 3/12/2011 1:24:00 AM

Respond to Question

Yes, it's okay to have a Samoyed if you live in Texas. We've had samoyeds here in south Texas for 25+ years and they do fine. They do need to be brushed regularly, especially in spring, to get the winter coat out so they don't overheat. Our last samoyed stayed mostly in the house with us, but he did fine outside, too.

Anonymous - 1/25/2012 10:28:56 AM

We live in Ga. and our Samoyed does just fine in the summer months. He is not an outdoor dog, so he doesn't stay out there all of the time, but we still take him on his evening walk and play outside.

Anonymous - 1/21/2012 1:18:31 PM

I had a Samoyed growing up in Phoenix,Arizona. The dog was always happy and smiley even in the summer. We took him everywhere with us and never shaved his fur. He lived outdoors most of the time but enjoyed being in the shade most often during the sunny parts of the day. He never suffered from heat stroke, I think most animals will ajust to their surroundings pretty well. He was a very happy family dog.

Anonymous - 6/30/2011 4:19:24 PM

If you are going to have a Samoyed in texas you will probably want to shave them down in the summer because if you dont they will become very overheated and that could be a problem

QUESTION: I am just about to get a Samoyed dog who is one year old. I took her from a friend who was moving and was not allowed dogs in the new place. I also have a dog myself, cross between a pom and a jack russell. Is there any way I can make them get along?? How often must the samoyed be walked, hour max every day?? thanks

Anonymous - 2/21/2011 8:23:31 AM

Respond to Question

My sammy gets along very very well with other animals large and small (including our cat who he adores) as well as small children who flock to him b/c he looks like a polar bear cub. He gets along naturally with everyone its a pretty typical breed trait. for the benefit of your dog though it is good to introduce them on NEUTRAL territory, Not in your home. That will help your dog better accept the interloper. They like excercise we probably don't give ours enough. An hour walk a day would be more than enough though. 20-30 minutes of phyisical play and walking is fair. Our's definiely has less behavioral issues on days when we "wear him out". and give him a good amount of excercise, we use doggie play dates, take him to open fields where he can run free and a back pack with water bottles in it (to wear him our more on regular walk).

Anonymous - 3/16/2011 3:45:40 PM

My Samoyed dog runs on a treadmill at least 15 20 mins and will run up hill everyday for 2 miles.... they will destroy your yard.... because they love to burrow little caves and will destroy anything in thier path that they can chew.... REALLY .... This is the first dog I have ever crated... I thought that was cruel at first but it is not ...she has a dog door I put the crate up to and took off the end door of the crate so she can go out in the dog run... they are very lovng dogs!... But High Maintance!

Anonymous - 3/14/2011 5:21:11 PM

I have a samoyed and a puggle..they get along great so I would introduce them outside..say a dog park like we did because it was a very friendly environment. Samoyeds would be fine with 3, 10 minute walks a day. My samyoyed gets lazy and tired if we try to take him on more than that.

Anonymous - 1/25/2011 6:22:40 PM

Respond to Question

People, people, people. My family has had show samoyeds, samoyeds as pets, and many samoyed puppies and please whatever you do, DONT shave your dog. Trim the fur but never shave. We made that horrible mistake once and vowed to never again. His beautiful fur grew in ugly and patchy and the only way to fix it were costly shots and pills. They have the most amazing coat when taken care of and their skin is not meant for direct sunlight. Please dont shave! Hope this helps :)

Anonymous - 7/14/2011 3:26:58 PM

Actually the last sentence to the last response is false. Never shave the samoyed. It will ruin his coat and make him prone to sunburn. We get ours groomed and she told us that they should not be shaved. Their coats act like insulators and helps to keep the hot air out. That doesn't mean you can leave them outside in hot weather. Always watch any dog in heat above 80 degrees and monitor their time outdoors.

Anonymous - 6/19/2011 11:31:31 AM

I suggust going to youtube and typing in the search bar ' dogs 101 samoyed '. PS the last sentence in the last comment is FALSE. Its best to shave them in the summer so they dont get heat stroke.

Anonymous - 5/20/2011 4:54:45 PM

Guard dog hardly LOL read any reputable publication on the samoyed breed and they will specifically point out they are lousy guard dogs. Way too friendly. They are OK watchdogs, they will usually bark if someone comes to the door. They won''t bark though at strangers you encounter on a walk or when they are not on their home turf. They will want to say Hi though they are intensely curious about other people. They are a wonderful breed very very loving sweet temperament. They take a fair amount of grooming effort. If you brush them early in life though they tend to like it. Surprisingly they don't get very dirty, their coats repel dirt and they stay white without bathing. If they get muddy let it dry then brush anything left out (very little effort). They do not have that doggy smell which is nice. They do not do well in hot climates. Never shave them.

QUESTION: What do you do if the 10 week old Samoyed puppy is nippy with 3 to 5 year old kids? Cause/solution?

Anonymous - 1/13/2011 3:15:46 PM

Respond to Question

ha. my samoyed is still a puppy and nippy too. i would suggest a rawhide bone or some such chew toy to keep him/her occupied so that he/she doesn't chew on fingers so much.

Anonymous - 11/8/2011 9:15:02 AM

if your dog is ten weeks old then she is still a puppy and puppies tend to chew fingers and even furniture because their new teeth are coming in. Give your Samoyed puppy chew toys to chew so she hopefully won`t be biting kids

QUESTION: Do samoyeds chew up couches?

Anonymous - 12/3/2010 2:15:02 PM

Respond to Question

My samoyed at two couches and the bindings off of many books. But only when he was left alone inside someone else's house. Guess he was nervous. If he was left outside or kenneled when he was away from home, he was never a problem.

Anonymous - 10/20/2011 11:29:23 AM

Our Samoyed didn't chew any furniture except the legs on our Maple dining room table. She makes herself comfortable on the couche's and chairs at will but has never chewed them up. The only reason they chew is out of boredom while you are at work, they will pick random items left in there reach that smell like you and chew them to pieces as pups (under 3yro). They do this because the item smells like you and they miss you or they are bored. They are the biggest lap dog you'll ever have,so if you enjoy the snuggling, please remember they are chewing for the same reason they are on your lap...they Love and miss you! Please do not scould them as it will not work with this breed.

Anonymous - 12/9/2010 1:01:37 AM

QUESTION: Is it possible to shave a samoyeds coat? or is it discouraged? I've heard that with some breeds you should avoid an all over shave and just stick to clipping. Like my Australian Shepherd for instance.

Anonymous - 12/1/2010 1:25:58 PM

Respond to Question

i don't know about the fur not growing back correctly, but i do know that a samoyed's skin is very sensitive and, when shaved, is very prone to getting sunburned. a samoyed's skin is almost too sensitive to even be touched when it is bare. Plus, the dog generally gets embarassed and sometimes scared and sometimes so ashamed that its almost depressed when it doesn't have its thick coat protecting it. the samoyed is a very proud breed.

Anonymous - 11/8/2011 9:20:29 AM

I can actually answer that question because I had my samoyed 'clipped' very short one v hot summer. To see a coatless Sammy was really strange, she just looked odd - even my dad didn't recognise her! But I would never do it again because it just doesn't grow back normally. For two years she had a huge chunk of her coat missing on the side of her body and she developed some strange dandruff which just made it fall it. Eventually she did return to normal, but, as I said, it was years, not months. By all means have the hair trimmed, but don't go for a Number 4 all over. BTW I was told after I'd had her 'shaved' that you should never shave a Sammy - I guess for the above reasons.

Anonymous - 5/27/2011 11:01:48 AM

NO it is strongly discouraged. In fact samoyeds should rarely be bathed. They are naturally dirt repellent. Dirt brushes out really easily. They don't smell "doggy". Because of the dense coat baths can cause hotspots and skin irritations when because water can get trapped. They are hard to dry. We periodically take ours to the groomer for a complete clean and brush him very frequently.

Anonymous - 3/16/2011 4:09:11 PM

The problem shaving down the samoyed, is that it is a very good possibility the hair will not grow in correctly. It is more important that you bath and brush your dog properly to control shedding, matting, packing, this is also a great way to bond with your pet and keep a eye on the skin, hair, and to see it they have unwanted vistors.
