Overview

The Rottweiler has origins that are unknown, however it probably descended from the Italian Mastiff. During the Middle Ages, the Rottweiller was commonly used as a herd dog. The Rottweiler became nearly extinct in the 1800's, but made a wonderful comeback in the early twentieth century by breeders in Stuttgart. The Rottweiler today is used for a variety of things such as tracking, herding, watch dogging, police work, obedience trails, as well as guarding which he does exceptionally well in.

Character

The Rottweiler can be a very fun loving dog, however he is very powerful and can be serious at times. Early obedience training and socialization is a must. This breed can be very territorial and protective of their family and their environment. Rottweilers can be very intimidating, still retaining an undeserving reputation as a vicious and/or mean dog, however they do extremely well in a family environment.

Temperament

The temperament of the Rottweiler can vary. Some can be very affectionate and somewhat of a clown, while others can be bullies. It is critical that this breed is socialized at an early age. Rottweilers can do well with children if raised around them, but should be supervised around small children due to their sheer size and power. The Rottweiler can do well around other dogs, however can be somewhat combative and can show aggression if not socialized properly as this is a very protective breed of both their family and their territory.

Care

The Rottweiler has a short and glossy coat that is relatively easy to groom. An average shedding breed, brushing with a firm bristle brush regularly should remove any excess hair or dead hairs. Bathing too often will remove the natural oils from the coat and/or skin. Dry shampooing is used by many Rottweiler owners as well as breeders so they are not to remove the essential oils in this breeds coat.

Coat

The Rottweiler has an outer coat that is short, straight, dense and of medium length. The coat should always be coarse to the touch. The undercoat should be present around the neck and thighs. Coat should never be wavy or curly. The Rottweiler has one of the most noticeable coats with the distinct black and bright rust coloring along their legs, underbelly and muzzle.

Training

Rottweilers are very eager to earn and will excel if given the opportunity. Obedience training is a must as this breed can become destructive without enough stimulation. A firm and dominant hand must be used when training this powerful breed. The Rottweiler is extremely intelligent and does well in many different sports and trials, but can also be stubborn. Obedience classes are recommended, but not always required.

Activity

The Rottweiler should have at least a large sized yard. They aren't really active indoors, so they need plenty of exercise outdoors, off lead preferably. This breed loves long walks and should have at least two long walks per day totaling at least two hours of exercise per day.

He hates them. I'm now scared to let him run free because I don't know if he will hurt them, play with them, or get hurt by them. What should I do? Thanks

QUESTION: I've got a pretty chill 3-year old Basset Hound (female), and my hubby and I were considering getting another dog. But I've been told that we shouldn't get a Rottweiler if we have any other pets. If we got a Rottweiler puppy and trained it properly it should be fine with our Basset and our other pets (bird cage & sand boa) right?

I rehomed a rotti that was just under 1 and i already had a staffi x of the same age. After 13 years together My rotti died due to cancer and i really missed him and so did my staffi x. I now have a 9 month rotti that has fitted into family life and even walks around with the staffi x like they have been together all the time. I think it all depends on the dogs and most of all the owner, if your willing to do the work then its worth the results. Hope this helps and good luck with what ever you decide to do

QUESTION: We are getting a Rottweiler. I have young kids - does it matter boy or girl?

Anonymous - 1/10/2012 9:01:40 PM

Respond to Question

I personally prefer dog rottis. Females tend to lean more to the men in the family and can be a tad narky when shes in heat. Hope this helps

Anonymous - 2/1/2012 8:12:49 AM

For the kid or the dog? My female was possessive as she got older. We had to continuously emphasize the dogs role in the pack. The Rottweiler Breed is very intelligent and will dominate whomever will allow it.

Anonymous - 1/16/2012 8:32:59 PM

Female Rottweilers are more docile.

QUESTION: How do i train my rott to be a very good guard dog.

Anonymous - 1/3/2012 10:33:03 PM

Respond to Question

My rotti was a family pet and still was a very good gaurd dog. Im a believer that a dog is a pet there fore it should be showed love and affection not locked out side in all weathers and treated as a burglar alarm

Anonymous - 2/1/2012 8:15:49 AM

You should keep your Rott from mingling with every one for example keep it in a pen or tie it in the back and let it out at night only. When it reaches 6 months let it out when you are around also do not let others pet or feed it. Training is also a great idea. I have one she was playful up to 6 months then she changed, but I constantly work with her

Anonymous - 1/27/2012 11:22:38 AM

Rotts do not have to be taught to be guard dogs. It is already in them. You need one key word that makes your dog cease what it is doing and return to you.Rotts are the top 10 dogs whenit comes to inteligence. What you need to do is figure out how to work the remote.

Anonymous - 12/28/2011 5:18:05 PM

Nothing, breed specific happens from hundreds of years of making dogs to fit needs. The best way to describe a Rott is a bionic border collie. It doesnt get any better than that.

QUESTION: how old should a female rott be to breed

Anonymous - 12/28/2011 12:25:45 PM

Respond to Question

1 year old

Anonymous - 1/21/2012 5:23:21 PM

They say 2 years but that is yet to be proven for any dog. A good mom is a good mom. No matter when she has the kids. As for health reasons,Some moms can start at one year and go on and on. then you have some that one litter and she looks like it almost killed her. only a good vet can answer that when examining your dog.

renesrotties - 1/16/2012 7:32:46 PM

Well around 2 years is a really good age however some breeders go for a year and half

QUESTION: What gave Rottweilers their name and how big is a rottweilers regular size?

Anonymous - 12/1/2011 9:38:13 AM

Respond to Question

AKC standards 90 to 119lbs for Female and 110 to 130 for male. If you want a big scary dog go for the high end. If you stay at the low end of the scale agility is awesome and health problems are less when you keep them in the low end of scale.

HossVonSouthDakota - 1/16/2012 8:01:38 PM

Rottweil Germany. The Rottweiler dog is named after this town; it used to be a butcher's dog in the region. 80-120 pounds

My female Rottie gets along great with other dogs, cats, and kids. She even "stole" one of my cats kittens and raised it as her own. They were in-separable. I guess it was because I never let her have pups. She is 13 years old now and is still the best dog I have ever owned.

I found my rottweiler and he was 5 months old. I have a Pug and a Yorkie Terrier and they love each other so much. As long as they grow up together they will be fine. Sometimes the little dogs snap at him cause all he wants to do is play while they are sleeping....

QUESTION: Are rotts good with cats? If I get one when its a puppy could I trust it with my cats when it gets bigger?

Anonymous - 10/21/2011 11:41:18 PM

Respond to Question

I have a 2 year old Rotti and about a year ago someone abandoned a kitten at our house. Bristol and Henry are now the best of buds! They run through the house playing and they sleep together. Just this past year we had 2 more kittens left at our doorstep and again she 'adopted' Fiona and Lil' Joe as well. She gets along great with them all.

Anonymous - 11/14/2011 1:24:35 PM

My rottweiler loves cats. She plays with them, eats with them, sleeps with them, and cleans them. She weighs 100 lbs. so sometimes she accidentally steps on one but they let her know about it. lol They all get along great.

Anonymous - 11/10/2011 12:20:29 AM

My rott is wonderful with my meows. I have 6 cats and he loves them all, but only 1 of the meows loves him back. She will roll on her back next to his face and then pat-pat his face with her paws. She also tries to clean his ears occasionally. He tends to annoy them because he has a butt sniffing fixation which they really don't appreciate, but he has never shown any violence towards them. Rottweilers are not very "delicate" and so he'll occassionally step on a tail or accidentally roll onto one of them.

It is not well documented, but rotts are believed to be descendants of dogs used by the Roman Empire to drive cattle. The modern breed is probably from Rottweil, Germany.

QUESTION: What kind of shampoo should i use for my Rottweiler?

Anonymous - 10/17/2011 9:04:43 AM

Respond to Question

For my rottie male I used an Ol'Roy flea and tick shampoo because of his love to explore the woods. But Mane and Tail works very well as a shampoo as well. Rottweilers are easier to bathe due to the coarse and short hair, as long as they don't hop out of the tub of course!

Anonymous - 10/16/2011 11:56:10 AM

Respond to Question

Do you leave for extended periods of time? If so it could be seperation anxiety even if it just like an hour or two. It could also be because he has assumed the alpha position in your home and he has claimed the washing machine and dryer as his own there arew multiple ways to fix this but too long to type so just go to www.dogbreedinfo.com.

Anonymous - 12/8/2011 10:41:24 AM

My female rottie went through that for a while. I think it is because she became bored and needed more attention. I fixed that problem with spending more time with her (and extra 10-15 two or three times a day/evening) and buying rawhide chews and stuffed animals for her to play with. She has done so much better. Hope this helps.
