Overview

The Rat Terrier was originally named by none other than Teddy Roosevelt. The Rat Terriers were developed in Great Britain from a cross between the Smooth Fox Terriers and the Manchester Terriers in 1820. They were brought into the United States in the 1890's, where they became more popular. American breeders crossed this breed yet again with the Smooth Fox Terrier, the Beagle, and the Whippet. Breeders wanted to retain the hunting instincts of the Beagle along with the red color and the bulkiness, while the Whippet provided to speed and agility with the blue and brindle colors.

Character

The Rat Terrier can be stubborn and willful at times, and are sometimes reserved around strangers but warm up very quickly. Even with his small size, this breed is fearless and shows the true colors of a terrier. This breed makes an excellent companion for a single person home. The Rat Terrier is not recommended for the average family as he has the tendency to become destructive without proper stimulation, and also loves to roam and wander providing much stress.

Temperament

Spunky, energetic, lively, and alert, this breed makes a good watchdog. The Rat Terrier makes a great companion to the right family, but should be trained properly as they have the tendency to snap if frightened. This breed can do well around other pets, but should be socialized at puppy hood to prevent difficulties. Smaller animals should not be placed around this breed if they are not properly socialized around them or raised around them.

Care

Rat Terriers do not require much in the grooming area. Brushing with a firm bristle or rubber brush occasionally will remove any loose or dead hair. Baths are only necessary approximately once every six months. Bathing too often will remove the natural oils from the coat, which can cause skin problems that this breed is prone to having. The Rat Terrier should be protected from cold weather via sweaters as this breed has a very short coat and gets cold very easily.

Coat

The Rat Terrier has a very short coat lying close to the body of the dog. Grooming is not a large task, however this breed should be protected from the cold via sweaters. The coat should be firm, and harsh to the touch while still remaining glossy.

Training

The Rat Terrier being so lively can be very stubborn and sometimes difficult to train. This breed requires a firm and experienced handler. Consistency is a must, as this breed tends to lose interest very quickly. A variety of techniques should be exercised to keep this dogs attention. Obedience classes at an early age are recommended by many breeds and Rat Terrier owners, however it is not required. Training can be a definite task for this alert and willful breed.

Activity

A small yard should be sufficient for this small yet energetic breed. They love regular romps free, however are escape artists and should always be kept on lead or in a fenced area. This breed should be trained not to pull on lead, and does very well on long walks or jogs. Rat Terriers should have at least 40 minutes of exercise per day to avoid overeating and/or laziness, which this breed is prone to.

QUESTION: We have a 10 1/2 week old female Rat Terrier. She is doing very well, eating well and sleeping all night in her crate. She is very, very active. She is constantly wanting to chew on everything she comes in contact with, including ourselves. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Respond to Question

I found that with my 2 year old rat terrier, who still chews like crazy, that nylabones have kept him busy enough to get a little while of peace. We also have liked to use on of those laser pointers that you get in the pet section of the grocery store to help wear him out. Another suggestion is get the nylabone brand of toys (they have a lot of different toys (: ) and get a lot of (real in my case at least) tennis balls. I have found that both of my terriers, even though they are different breeds, love these things and it keeps them busy/gives them exercise without wearing yourself out :)

QUESTION: We got a rat terrier from a rescue group. We figure he is about 4 yrs old. The day after we got him I had to take him to the vet due to him coughing and running fever. Two months later he started coughing again, took him to the vet. Now here it is two months later and he is sick again. Why is he getting sick so much? I really can't afford to take him to the vet this time. Is there anything over the counter I can give him?

Anonymous - 1/9/2012 1:41:13 PM

Respond to Question

I would suggest 1/2 cc of long lasting penicillon every few days until he is better. I grew up on a ranch in Dakota and it is not rocket science to treat many illnesses and a lot of vets are crooks, as far as I'm concerned, preying on small pet owners. You can get antibiotics at farm supply stores - you have to ask, usually, as they are kept refrigerated. I have treated many dogs this way, and I always have the medicine on hand.

Anonymous - 1/30/2012 9:21:10 PM

People who cannot afford a pet should not own one. The initial sickness was probably from the pound or rescue where you got him. He seems to not have gotten over it. Maybe he didn't get the right medicine or enough of it.

QUESTION: Are Rat Terries clean?

Anonymous - 1/1/2012 8:38:08 PM

Respond to Question

My rat terrier is also very easy to bathe when he does get dirty. The trick is to not force them and to treat them during the bathing process so he/she learns that bathing is like anything else. Do a good job and you get a treat. Eventually you will have a willing dog that will do it because he trusts you and not because he wants a treat.

Respond to Question

I do know my rat terriers previous owner. I'm not sure if he was beat or anything. But I do believe he was mistreated to some degree. He was very timid when he came to me. Cowered when he thought was in trouble, so I've spent a yr letting him know he is safe. There has been a signifigant change in him and I believe in my heart he is being the dog he was meant to be. But the last few days have just have me worried about him

Anonymous - 11/15/2011 9:38:18 PM

Hi :) I have 2 rat terriers myself, a 7-year-old female and a 3-month-old male. Do you know the previous owners of your rat terrier? It sounds to me like he was mistreated and starved for attention. But you say you've had him for over a year, so you'd think he'd be well-adjusted by now... My advice to you is to take him to a vet, he may also have problems with his bladder.

QUESTION: what would a rat terrier and a fox terrier look like. I have a terrier of some kind but he has both fox and rat terrier features.

Anonymous - 10/20/2011 1:37:00 PM

Respond to Question

Well, it's kind of hard to say. Fox terriers and rat terriers really do look a lot alike. I have 2 rat terriers myself. I saw a lady in PetSmart just the other day with a little dog, and I thought it was a rat terrier. When I asked her what kind of dog it was, she told me fox terrier... Google pics of fox terriers and rat terriers. Generally fox terriers have longer faces, but some are very hard to distinguish from rat terriers. Either way, they will make very cute puppies! :)

Anonymous - 10/3/2011 11:56:59 AM

Respond to Question

Our male rat terrier was about 8 months old when we adopted him. He is now 5 years old and still doesn't like little boys. He doesn't try and bite them, but will growl. He doesn't do this to little girls which makes us believe he was treated badly by a little boy. We know this about our dog and if we have company, we usually put him in the bedroom.

Anonymous - 10/25/2011 10:42:50 AM

Well, have you had your rat terrirer since birth or not? It depends on when you got him. If you got him from somewhere, he may not have been in a home with children. It sounds like he is fearful of children. Just get him acquainted with children in a controlled environment and he will do just fine.

QUESTION: My little female (20 pounds) is now 9 months old. We rescued her at 3 months and were told she was a Jack Russell mix but sure looks more like a rat terrier. She does her business outside. She lets us know by scratching on the carpeting. She gets bored easily and if I am out of the room for 5 minutes she scratches the carpeting in the center of the room. 3 spots right down to carpet backing. Any ideas? She was crate trained but in the last 2 weeks it is a battle to get her into the crate at night. She wants to sleep with me and I have let her. She now whines and sometimes barks when I have to leave the house and put her in the crate. She can't be trusted to have the run of house. Ideas on this scenario? Thanks.

Anonymous - 9/30/2011 8:59:08 PM

Respond to Question

First, give her LOTS of toys to play with while you are gone. Pratice leaving for 5 min a day and everyday go up by 5's and see how she acts. If she is entertained, that's great. If she continues, she has separation anxiety. Second, at night, leave a light on. Bring her upstairs where you sleep and put her next to the bed. Do that for 1 week. Then put her where you want her to sleep. She and you will be fine!

I wouldn't recommend you getting a rat terrier. I have one of my own and although I love him to death he can be very aggressive. This happens mostly towards children and men who are wearing ball caps. I have had him for two years and cannot seem to break him of this habit. They are very good dogs though if you can socialize them as a puppy.
