Overview

Also commonly referred to as the Canary Dog, the Presa Canario's are believed to be descended from the cross breeding of the extinct Bordino Majiro and imported English Mastiffs. This breed was developed in the 1800's specifically for dog fighting. During the 1940's dog fighting was outlawed and the Presa Canario nearly became extinct. This breed was revived during the 1970's by Dr. Carl Semencie, an American veterinarian.

Character

A powerfully constructed breed, the Presa Canario is robust with a large head and chest. They exude an imposing presence and have a severe expression. They are agile, courageous, and unique. The Presa Canario breed has a deep, serious bark, docile with its family, but absolutely fierce and aggressive with strangers.

Temperament

Presa Canario's require a very dominant owner and is not recommended for first time dog owners. The Presa Canario can be highly dangerous if placed with the wrong owner. However, with the right owner this breed is capable of being a loyal and devoted companion. They make excellent guard dogs as they are protective by nature of their family and territory and will not hesitate to attack anyone or anything it perceives as a threat. This breed is not suitable for homes with children or other pets.

Care

Presa Canario's regular brushing of the coat with a firm bristle brush will minimize loose and dead hair. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done when necessary. Health problems associated with this breed are hip dysplasia, demodex mange, a diminished immune system, and eyelid problems.

Coat

The Presa Canario has a short, flat, smooth single coat. The coat is coarse in texture, very fine, short on the ears, and slightly longer in length on the rear hindquarters and withers. This breed is an average shedder.

Training

Intense early socialization and obedience training is an absolute must. Presa Canario owners must be fair, consistent, assertive, and set firm limitations. Mutual respect is crucial.

Activity

The Presa Canario breed is not recommended for apartment dwelling. They do best with a securely fenced yard or rural home. They are very athletic and enjoy daily exercise. The Presa must be securely leashed and muzzled when in public.

In the right family, if properly introduced, and with proper leadership, kids within the family will be just fine with a Presa Canario. this is not a dog for first time dog owners and can even be dangerous with the wrong kind of owner. The kids MUST be in higher authority than the dog to be safe.

Anonymous - 1/10/2012 9:11:44 PM

Respond to Question

Presa Canario's are a very dominating breed. He/she is trying to display thier dominance over you. You need to establish you are the alpha dog and you are the dominate one immediatley ! This breed requiers very firm and assertive owners. I did this with mine and he is very obedient.

QUESTION: DO PRESA CANARIO's MAKE GOOD GUARD DOGS AND WATCH DOGS? ARE THEY GOOD WITH PRETEENS AND OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS?

Anonymous - 12/28/2011 10:20:27 AM

Respond to Question

Yes presa canario's make excellent guard dogs !!! They can decide if a person is a threat or not and treat them accordingly. Unlike breeds like the german shepherd and doberman whom are typically aggressive towards all strangers. They are generally great with everyone once they get to know them and establish if they are a threat or not. My presa is a big ham and loves most people, but I have a sister in law who is kind of a shady person and he hates her. Wont let her anywhere near the house.

QUESTION: do the presa canario poop a lot? How big is their poop? Are they good with other older dogs?

Anonymous - 11/30/2011 4:54:44 PM

Respond to Question

Presas are good living with dogs of the opposite sex. If you have two males or two females they will fight a lot. I have a male presa and german shepheard and they get into viciouse fights all the time. But whenever a female dog comes over he is very friendly....I also take him to the dog park and he loves playing with the other dogs.... only time there is ever a problem is if another dominate alpha personality male shows up.

Anonymous - 1/28/2012 1:28:50 PM

Yes, BIG! My presa canario is very good with other dogs, but should not be expected with all.

QUESTION: how long does it take for cropped ears to heal on a presa?

Anonymous - 8/14/2011 7:06:37 AM

Respond to Question

We got our Presas ears cropped at 7 weeks. The shorter the crop the faster they heal. Our puppy has the smallest ears the vet will do and roughly took 6-8 weeks to fully heal with posts and stiches removed. Be aware it is alot of work and they HAVE to be cared for properly... From experience Polysporin Original Ointment ( not cream) is by far the best and this must be done 4-6 times a day, to keep the scabs moist. Dry scabs will ruin the crop and cause ears to wrinkle and not stand up straight due to scar tissue build up. Puppy must besupervised at all times, Do Not Use Cones!!

QUESTION: What kind of food do you feed a presa canario?

Anonymous - 8/2/2011 7:55:55 PM

Respond to Question

I FEED MY 2 YR OLD PRESA AN ALL NATURAL DOG FOOD. I ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT THE FIRST INGREDIENT IS FISH AS I FOUND THAT HIS SKIN WAS ALWAYS DRY WHEN I FIRST GOT HIM. NOW HIS SKIN IS GREAT. I ALSO KEEP HIM AT A HEALTHY WEIGHT WITH THIS TYPE OF FOOD. I DO NOT FEED HIM A HIGH PROTIEN DIET AS I FOUND THAT HIS WEIGHT WOULD DRAMATICALLY INCREASE AND WE COULDN'T MANAGE HIM. HE CURRENTLY WEIGHS 90LBS AND IS HEALTHY AS CAN BE. WITH LOTS OF ENERGY. I ALSO HAVE FOUND THAT HE IS NOT HUNGRY ALL THE TIME WHILE ON THIS DIET AS WELL. WHEN I HAD HIM ON THE HIGH PROTIEN DIET HE WOULD EAT AND POOP AND THATS IT.

QUESTION: is a presa canario hard to train in comparison to other breeds

Anonymous - 6/23/2011 7:13:08 PM

Respond to Question

If you are a very firm and very dominate type owner presa canario's are not hard to train. They require a firm hand because they are very dominate dogs but also love to please you. My presa cant stand for me to be mad at him. So he was pretty simple to train, not as easy as a german shepheard but not hard either. Treats are a great way to start training them and slowly moving off to just verbal.

Anonymous - 10/8/2011 4:07:09 PM

Thats a good question. That all depends on what you are training your presa canario dog to do. For obedience training no. Just like any breed presa canario's posses the strong urge to please their master. If you want the dog to be "less aggressive" it is printed in their dna. Some people will say its all in the way you raise the dog but those are the people that really dont know the breed. My last presa was a 140lbs male and he seemed to love everyone until one day my 8 month old niece was crawling by him , she is now missing her left arm the attack was completely unprovoked. Dont get me wrong i love the breed and im still very passionate about them but i just cannot bring myself to have another and risk the accident and possibly losing both a child and another dog.

QUESTION: I have an 18 month old Presa Canario and he is lazy lazy lazy. He is stubborn as all hell. Is this usual?

Anonymous - 3/12/2011 6:30:02 PM

Respond to Question

Yes but that is where it is your responsibility to stimulate your dog's mind. Laziness in a presa canario comes from laziness in the training, consistency, consistency, consistency, a heavy hand is also needed, also alot of affection will have you presa begging to work for you.

QUESTION: How do Presa Canario's do around kids? Also I was planning on getting a cane corso around the same time I get a presa canario...how would those 2 breeds do around each other?

Anonymous - 2/19/2011 8:00:25 PM

Respond to Question

Both dogs will do fine together but they have to be the opposite sex, one male one female. Or else you will have problems. As for a Presa being around children. I have Four kids, ages 4,6,8 and 10 They have been raised with her, she is 8. there was never one time that she was rough with the kids. She is the best dog ever and we are getting another one.

Anonymous - 8/30/2011 9:39:29 AM

I had a presa canario around my 4 year old and my 1 year old, he was the best dog I have ever seen in my life. But we were very firm with him in training him to accept who we accept. Not good with the cats though.

Anonymous - 4/5/2011 12:47:38 AM

I HAVE A CANE CORSO AND A PRESA THAT ARE BOTH FEMALES AND THEY ARE NOW ABOUT 4 YEARS OLD AND THEY PLAYED AND GOT ALONG WITH EACH OTHER, UNTIL THEY GOT ABOUT 2 AND THEY HAVE BEEN FIGHTING EVER SINCE!

QUESTION: How much should I feed a 8 week old presa male? He's 17.3 lbs now & when do I take him off puppy food?

Anonymous - 11/8/2010 9:23:46 PM

Respond to Question

I am appauled at this answer. My family has been breeding presas for over 25 years and the first 6 months it was always a high protein diet with anywhere from 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup and stepping up 1/4 cup every three months until 18 months depending on activity no more than 3 cups twice per day. As for you, you need to get your food at a pet supply center is a load of crap the feed store in my area carries this stuff called intimidator it is a high protein food. but you should actually be asking your vet during the next exam what and how much because aside from you no one knows your pet better.

Anonymous - 8/3/2011 10:27:14 AM

ALSO I FORGOT TO TELL YOU THAT YOU SHOULD FEED HIM PUPPY FOOD FOR THE FIRST YEAR . NOT FOOD FROM PLACES LIKE WALMART BUT A FOOD FOUND AT PLACES LIKE PET CO. OR SUPERPETS, PET SMART .ECT. THEY CARRY A BETTER QUALITY OF FOOD THAN THAT THAT GETS SENT TO WALMART STORES AND FEED AND FARM STORES.

QUESTION: Does the Presa Canario drool?

Anonymous - 10/21/2010 9:51:34 AM

Respond to Question

No. Presa Canario's dont drool all the time. Usually at the times they eat or drink or are begging for something you have in front of them. Dogs that usually drool that are mixed with this breed are the mastiffs and probably your dog has the more of this gene that both of the parents carry which im saying that its more directly linked to the mastiff side than the presa side. Someone could have possibly bred a mastiff into the presa on either side of the blood line very recently and used papers on another dog. Not saying this happened but do some checking with the dame and sire and if you can ask for a dna. If you have a lot of money in your dog and its supposed to be full blooded then do some checking. Ive seen this before and you have to be careful of who you get your dog from not every one tells the truth

Anonymous - 1/27/2011 8:01:55 PM

Yes, but not as bad as other mastiff breeds.
