QUESTION: My 11 month old standard poodle used to be hungry all the time - she could hardly wait for meal time. Now she turns her nose up at her food. I have not changed the food. She just does not seem hungry. No other behavior changes. She does eat some just not ravenous like before. Any ideas?

QUESTION: My 3 yr old poodle who was groomed every 2 months, fed excellent dog food, exercised usually daily and has all the attention one can give, he is also in excellent health in almost every way. But he has lost most of his white coat, and the new hair that grew in is strangely dry, different texture and the color has now become dominantly red with white on head, legs sides and tail. Have been looking for reasons for this. Poodle was checked by vet, changed to raw dog food, vitamins, fish oil. He is very active eats everything. By far he the most respectful dog I have ever had personality plus, gentle soul. Anyone have any ideas.

QUESTION: My standard bred poodle only poops 1x a day is that normal?
Anonymous - 8/15/2011 10:04:39 AM
Respond to Question
Yes. Dogs usually "poop" as many times as they are fed. If you feed them twice a day, they usually go twice. If you feed them once a day, they usually go once. However, that is not a fast rule. Sometimes they will go once, even if fed twice.
Anonymous - 10/7/2011 12:17:41 AM
Poodles can sometimes have medium straight hair,on the head and mostly tight curly hair on the body. Texture and tightness of curl varies.

QUESTION: Hello! We had been searching for a standard poodle pup for about 6 months now and last week stumbled across a standard breeder who also owns and runs a grooming shop. She has been breeding for 9 years. She has RA which has gotten really bad. Her female managed to become pregnant by her male (all AKA registered and "experienced dog parents.") Due to her declining health she was wanting the pups to get thier new homes FAST dso she sold them for $100. The normal selling price in the past was always $1200. She did not offer the papers however for this price. I have a little male who is 6 weekso old. I have 2 questions. Can I feel comfortable as the new owner of this pup with the story I just shared? Also, at 6 weeks his measurements are 13 inches from chin to rear end and he is around 8 inches from ground to top of his back. Is this a normal sized 6 week old? I was able to meet the parents and they are normal looking standard poodles.

I have no question as to if my puppy is a full standard as he is a big boy now at 19 weeks! And to the person who responded with why are you asking questions AFTER we purchased him, I do realize how that sounded and I didn't mean to come across as someone who seemed fickle and irresponsible. I bought him knowing he was worth the doubts I had, I just was curious of others opinions.
Anonymous - 11/4/2011 10:46:25 AM
As the owner of three standard poodles my first thought when I read this was, why are you worried about this now AFTER you bought the puppy? If you were concerned you should have been concerned before the $100.00 purchase. I don't let my puppies go before 8 weeks and only after meeting and getting some history on the buyer. If she's selling them for $100.00 without papers, I would think they weren't full standards. Take him to the vet and see what they say. Sorry to sound like a broken record, but you paid $100.00 for a full bred Standard Poodle that (as you said) goes for $1200.00. Love him and give him a good home. Can't change what's already done.
Anonymous - 11/3/2011 8:55:10 PM
Are you sure that the poodle pup is only 6 weeks old? I have seen big 6 week old pups and they grow to be real big so do keep that in mind they call them Royals How big was the parents and were the parents health tested? Those are some questions that I would ask the breeder

QUESTION: Hi i have a standard poodle, and to me he is to thin. There is always food in his bowl. But he sure does not over eat. The vet told me at his last visit two weeks ago he does not have worms. And i feed him IAMS food. Can you tell me how to get some weight on him?
Anonymous - 7/4/2011 3:11:58 AM
Respond to Question
Try changing the food to something better with no animal by products. Which is not good for them. The pet stores are where to find this costs a bit more but its all natural stuff. I have a standard poodle who is 14 months. She dosent really eat in the am so I leave it there till 1 and she eats then by 7 she is really hungry. Also try our foods if you want to start this. They love chicken, liver, turkey. No bison and veal yet. Caution watch for food allergies too.
Anonymous - 12/25/2011 11:42:03 PM
Two of mine are on the larger side, while my female is on the tiny side. She's healthy so it's not a concern. I too feel IAMS is crap. I free feed Exclusive brand dog food. Make sure the first ingrediant is meat..chicken, beef, lamb etc. That's best for your dog. You want a decent amount of protein in his food. Exclusive has @ 26%. As long as your dog is healthy, his coat is shiny and the vet says he's ok, I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure he's a happy pet. ;)
Anonymous - 11/3/2011 9:05:34 PM
IAMS is not a premium food. If I were you I'd feed your poodle Taste of the Wild. It tasts GREAT according to my poodles and it's grain free and healthy for them. If your interested in learning more about dog food I recommend doing a search for dog food reviews or dog food ratings. :) IAMS is crap. Sorry.
Anonymous - 7/27/2011 4:21:25 AM
Poodles tend to be thin animals. And, consider that poodles do not mature until 2 - at which time they will fill out some... So before you put weight on him, be certain he really needs it. IF your vet or breeder or mentor feels that he does need weight, try "satin ball's. Just search the term on the internet and it should pop quite a few hits. Satin balls are wonderful for coat and skin also.
Good luck.

QUESTION: Are poodles hard to potty train? Also do they require much grooming?
Anonymous - 7/3/2011 6:30:39 PM
Respond to Question
POTTY TRAINING:
Poodles are incredibly smart. If you aren't careful, they will train you! Be consistent and firm. Poodles do not require a heavy hand, they very much want to please. I know poodles who ring bells and press buzzers to go outside.
Remember: Poodle = SMART If (when!) they do something bad...even if it's very funny - and at times it can be - don't let them know you found it funny! Like a bad child they will do it again just because you laughed.
GROOMING:
Poodles can have amazing, hair everywhere, continental haircuts (think show dog!) or they can be clippered all over with a 10 blade in a hunting cut.
They DO require regular grooming a- at least every 8 weeks - the style you choose will dicate the amount of upkeep. Poodles - as advertised - do not shed. As great as that is, it means that YOU must take care of their coats.

You can also try some powder that goes in food that is sold for that issue. Farm stores or stores like farm and home such as Orschelens have it. Also vets have some as well.

Put pinneapples in your poodles food during meal time because it tastes bad in waste. Also clean it up after it uses the bathroom, so it will not be there to eat.

QUESTION: Hi. My poodle Val is coughing and sneezing and my mom wont take him to the vet. I think he might have Kennel Cough. How cruel is that?! Hes had it for months and my mom says hes fine but I know hes not. What can I do and what could he have? Thanks. :(
Anonymous - 4/30/2011 1:42:22 PM
Respond to Question
You are correct, it is very cruel. Tell your mother that poodle is not "just a dog" it is a life. You don't say if your mom can afford treatment or not but the first step is to take him to the vet for an examination. If she still refuses to do so, tell her it is a form of animal abuse, just like not feeding the dog. If you can, I suggeset that you take the dog to the vet. I recently lost my standard & am looking for another. I will be more than happy to take her dog off her hands. PS - Does the dog sleep in the house or outside?
Anonymous - 10/22/2011 1:11:15 PM
I think that it is wonderful that you are so concerned about your poodle's health. I have been a poodle breeder for many years. I am also the Mom of 6 kids.(The kids & I breed poodle pups together- we currently have a litter of 4!) Perhaps if you just talked with your Mom sharing your concern and ask her permission to take the poodle to the vet- offer to pay for it yourself- that will get her attention, helping her to realize how concerned you are and how important it is to you. Best Wishes Kelly Tucker

No poodles do not she, but they do require grooming. They are also considered hypoallregenic, because they have hair closer in type to a human.

My standard poodle is 11 years old, today he ran full steam ahead through the house with one of his toys. I was told he would mellow out at 2 years. At 4 years I had him neutered, he still kept that puppy personality. Within the past year he has had trouble standing for long periods of time, his groomer keeps him all day and just gives him rest breaks. Otherwise he is fine and the love of my life.

QUESTION: I just inherited a 13 yr old male small poodle(9-13lbs). It was my grandmother's, then my moms and now mine. He has extreme separation anxiety and always wants on my lap. He was potty trained on a throw rug. Also, he thinks he should sleep on the bed... I can't trust him because he will urinate on the carpet if he gets down. He is also a finiky (sp) eater. He was fed from the table and I don't even do that with my dog. I work all day and have had to crate him because he is destructive. I promised my mom I would take him but I can't keep cleaning up and fixing things. He truly needs to be with a retired person who stays home. suggestions?

We adopted two standard poodles as pups and it did take some time to re orient them to our schedules and they do want to do what is expected. There is a trainer here that we have heard of that took a dog that had bad behavior for one whole month before returning it to it's owner for doggy boot camp. My suggestion is to find a local pet shop who has knowledge about retraining. Believe me, the poodles are very smart and we are amazed how much our two "kids" can understand. Any age can be re oriented to your lifestyle and will live up to around 18 years if in good health. Ours are almost two years old now and have learned to respond to many one word commands or phrases - we take them running beside us while on a bike, gets their anxiety levels down. Take a good walk in the morning then when you get off of work. We do this and can leave them in a crate for 4=6 hrs no issues and they prefer crate as it is like their cave.

I'm sorry but beneful is not the best dog food. If your trying to save money I get it. I have 7 poodles and poodle hybrids and I feed them Premium edge skin in coat which contains fish.. salmon to be exact. You might also want to consider a grain free dog food and Taste of the Wild has a product that is also a salmon feed but is much more expensive. Have you looked in your yellow pages for a local feed store? That is where your going to find dog food for MUCH less and they should carry all the brands...except for the brands you find at the grocery stores and Petco which is all garbage in my opinion. Do some research on Dog Food Rating and you will find just how great beneful is. Good Luck!
Anonymous - 7/27/2011 4:27:49 AM
This will not apply to your 6-week old poodle but it shoud help in the future. My dog, Venus, a std. poodle, had the same issue. The vet. said poodles have food allergies & need dog food which contains fish. To save mondy, we found one very similar in content the vet. recommended but half the price at Wal-Mart. It's Beneful by Purina (buy the one with real salon). Venus' bowel movements are much more healthy. She also does not get ear infecions. The groomer pts two cotton balls in each ear to keep the water out. I believe when people say they bark too much that it is the owner not training the dog proerly. Venus is sch a wonderful and smart dog. Poodles don't shed and smell like other dogs. I have family over who have allergies to other dogs but are fine around poodles. Go through the work to house train your dog when they are puppies and read how to kennel train them. My daughter dresses her up all the time in costumes. She is the most patient and kind dog I hae ever seen.

QUESTION: What is the easiest way to get a standard poodle? Private breeder?
Anonymous - 2/18/2011 10:18:49 AM
Respond to Question
A private standard poodle breeder is good. You want to get someone that is very reputable. A good way to find a reputable breeder is by going on the AKC website. Read the reviews about the breeders. Go & visit 5/6 different breeders before you make your choice of who you buy from. Make sure you know what you are looking for as well. By looking & watching the dam & sire(if available) you can tell how big the puppy could be. Also make sure & ask about bad traits in lineage so you know what might come in future w/your dog. A rescue is another good option, where you would be saving an animals life,& giving the dog a forever home that it might not have before shelter. They can make great pets for family & w/children. BUT if the dog was mistreated before coming to shelter by children. The dog might be leery of children,& if treated proper by children it will be a great guard dog.

QUESTION: Hi, we rescued a Standard Poodle from the streets, he is great, very intellignet, fast learning, very sociable, I have no complains about him. Thats why I want to give him the best life he can have, he seems to be very greatfull with us, the only thing that can bother me is the smell fact. I allready change the food form a standar to a premium, and seems to work better, but he stinks at the 4th o 5th day after his bath. Beacuse he is a indoor dog we use to shower him every week, but the groomer says that we can afect their natural skin oils, that we need to do it every 3 weeks. So this is my question, how often we can shower him?
Anonymous - 2/17/2011 2:19:09 PM
Respond to Question
The best for standards is about 10 days, with a through brushing couple times in between. Other wise it can cause skin irritation and really matted hair which would be a discomfort to the dog. One thing about the S.Poodle is they have almost a wool coat like sheep, and can get matted w/grass and mud even. A good brushing can get the grass out but if he gets to muddy you definitely want to give him a bath b/c mud can dry out their skin as well. My family had one for 18+ yrs he had to be put down about 2yrs ago due to old age, but we actually just kept him with a puff ball on top of his head and tip of his tail; beside winter time.. about end of Sept. let it grow out and brush it about once a day until about mid-march and that way he stays warm and cool during the times he needs to be. Another option is a doggie sweater, but not outside for long periods in the cold with just a sweater; not a substantial amount of warmth for a dog in say less then 40F.
