pomeranians can but are less likely to get sick if they're from a reputable breeder and get all of their shots and vaccinations.

QUESTION: My second rescue pom was ignored for 3 of his 4 years. He marks up the furniture and occasionally it is a full pee. If we go visiting I have to put a belly band on him but he will even pee in that. My home is an open floorplan so I cannot confine him to a room and this is what happened to him before so he will bark constantly if he can't see me. tethering him to me isn't practical as I am up and down a lot. he gets a lot of praise when he pees outside but it is more the marking that is driving me crazy. Any ideas?
Anonymous - 5/15/2012 12:46:25 PM
Respond to Question
well, i usually put my pom in either her crate inside or kennel outside if i need to, both in places where she can't see me. she whines and she barks and she cries. but all you have to do is ignore it and let him learn barking doesn't let him out of the crate. it's not abuse and also, dogs are supposed to live by YOUR schedule, not his own unless you let him out to go potty when he needs to.

QUESTION: A friend has a Pom that is very small and has a teddy bear face and no pointy nose. Is this a special breed?
Anonymous - 5/7/2012 2:48:42 AM
Respond to Question
Majority of Poms as pups look like fluffy little teddy bears. They soon lose their puppy coat transitioning to their adult coat, that periods sometimes called the pom uglies. In general poms tend to have a foxy look. Some may, as an adult have a , kind of teddy bear or baby doll face. Some costs may have more fluff than others, can vary.

Anonymous - 5/1/2012 3:38:02 PM
Respond to Question
It is not recommended to shave a pomeranian. Just trimming of extra fur around paws to prevent slipping and debris getting caught under the paws, also for sanitary reasons trim fur around genital area and anus. Other than that, not necessary to shave a pom. If a pom is shaven you run the risk that the coat might not grow back properly or at all.
Anonymous - 5/8/2012 5:54:00 PM
As long as you can train them or it will be to late.

if introduced properly, they can be good with kids...anyone they can call their family, preety much.

QUESTION: i would love to adopt a pomsky! but i seem to be having trouble getting any info onb them! can you help me out??
Anonymous - 4/18/2012 7:35:38 PM
Respond to Question
They may not do well with children, more likely not unless raised with them...They can become aggressive if not handled with authority but if they are raised right, they are delightful pets and as loving a companion as you could want. They typically live around 15 years and have problems with joints and teeth. They shed quite a lot and require regular brushing. They are easily trained and eager to please...
Anonymous - 4/27/2012 10:36:33 AM
Pomeranians need a daily walk, don't treat it like a little dog, just treat it like a normal dog. They can live up to 15 years. Brush it's coat often. They are sweet companions and pets. Be aware of their health problems of dislocated kneecaps and heart problems. Make sure to display proper leadership and everything will be okay.

QUESTION: My husband and I found a Pomeranian running the streets, We posted ads on craigs list to no avail. We searched for flyers in the area we called local shelters.. no one is claiming this dog. i would like to keep him because his so pleasant to be around. He is aprx. 10 yrs old the vet said. This dog is peeing in my house and that is something I will not tolerate. How can i break this dog of peeing in my house? I put his nose in it and spank him and put him outside but he does not get it. HELP
Anonymous - 4/12/2012 2:14:26 PM
Respond to Question
never put his nose in it. that only confuses them and you are asking for a face infection. take him outside the same door to same place in yard. tell him go potty. give him just 5 minutes. if no potty back inside to crate or whatever. when he does potty, give a treat and let stay out of crate. just be patient.
charlyecc - 5/5/2012 11:38:48 PM
You aren't going to change him at this point. Poms really need to be trained very early. I have an 11 year old female that is paper and outside trained and a male that is trained for outside. Unless they are sick they NEVER mess up the house. If they do, accidentally, they go to their crates and pout because it really hurts their feeling when they do...If he won't use puppy pads or a potty patch, you are fighting a losing battle. DO NOT SPANK HIM!
Anonymous - 4/27/2012 10:33:26 AM
Where did you find this pomeranian? is he larger?
ive been missing mine since feb. 24, 2012.. is there a way you can post a picture or send to my email?
Anonymous - 4/19/2012 12:55:26 PM
Oh My! No, spanking will not work. Beside these little breeds should not be handled that way. I have had poms my entire life. If you can not tolerate it (and I do understand!)give him to a rescue no kill shelter. This may be why you found him - he is not trained. He is 10 yes old you said---that is old for a pom so he has bad habbits. Consider litter box instead. They have tiny bladders and at 10 start to loose bladder control. I have a 2ys old, currenlty buying another and last month had to put down our 15 yr old pom so I have exp w them.

QUESTION: My Pomeranian is 1 yr and 3 months he has pancreites and the vet gave me some meds and said he sould be better in a few days he had the runns and vomiting since the vet has seem him he has only stopped the runns and vomiting but is still not eating and drinking like he should or like he use to . Vets are very expensive is there a better place to take him to have him rechecked and not cost me so much money.
Anonymous - 3/19/2012 5:09:07 PM
Respond to Question
If your Pomeranian has pancreatitis it will need a special bland diet for the rest of it's life like trice and tuna with the proper vitamins and no fatty foods or treats. Pancreatitis is very painful and can be deadly. Take it to your vet. I am afraid that if you cannot afford to properly vet your pet, you might want to look into finding another home for it.
Anonymous - 5/15/2012 12:32:44 PM
Just know that Pancreatitis is deadly if left untreated. If you love the dog, take it back to the vet.

Respond to Question
It would have been best to neuter them both as soon as they were old enough. That being said, now that they are marking is it less likely they will ever stop now. But neutering at this point would still prevent unwanted breedings and calm them both down. You might want to invest in some male wraps at this point to save your carpet and furniture.

Respond to Question
You can start weaning puppies at around 5 weeks. You might want to try a very small kibble brand of dog food like Nutrisource chicken n rice or Diamond naturals chicken n rice puppy. Mix it with warm water to soften it, I dont recommend canned food at all. If puppies need more for firm stool, Id feed a little canned pumpkin. You may start worming at 2, 4, 6 weeks.

QUESTION: Are poms good when children are around?
Anonymous - 3/4/2012 5:09:21 PM
Respond to Question
Poms are lovely little dogs. Kids can be intimidating and too rough. Think of any small dog as fine china. Is the child capable of handling fine china without breaking it? Sorry. I just don't think any small dog and young child should be together.
Anonymous - 5/15/2012 12:35:00 PM
I think it depends on whether they are raised from a puppy with kids around. I have a three year old and an 18 month old and our Pomeranian loves them and they love him! I have heard a lot of people say that Poms are to high strung for kids but that has not been the case for me. He was kid socialized from the time he was a puppy, don't know if this helps.

QUESTION: do pomeranians shed
Anonymous - 2/9/2012 5:42:00 PM
Respond to Question
Yes, fairly continuously and fairly heavily. Mine stay brushed but my "fur"niture is still difficult to keep free of hair...If you are not okay with shedding, a Pom is NOT the dog for you. Get a Bichon instead.
Anonymous - 4/27/2012 10:28:05 AM
poms do shed, they shed twice a year
Anonymous - 2/26/2012 9:58:30 AM
Yes, pomeranians shed quite a bit. You need to follow the recommended brushing schedule to help reduce the shedding. It won't stop it however. If you don't brush regularly and don't brush the undercoat they will get many mats in the undercoat. Be gentle when brushing, especially when working on small mats, or your dog will learn to hate the brushing routine. I obtained my pom from my daughter who had it for a year and she did not brush regularly and when she did I fear she pulled a lot. He did not like being brushed in certain areas because of this. It took some time of persistence and gentleness while brushing to gain his trust. I have found that pin brushes work best for my dog.

QUESTION: Are Pomeranians good with kids, what's their average life span, were they destructive and do they tear up furniture oh and last but not least are they super friendly and cuddly?
Anonymous - 2/8/2012 10:09:04 PM
Respond to Question
My poms were raised with my grandchildren but have never been good with them...Typically, they don't do well with especially small children. They are better with the boys now that they are teenagers but are still leery of them...They were a little destructive as puppies but would choose a toy first if readily available. Yes they are friendly and cuddly if raised right...Mine are in my lap more than not...
Anonymous - 4/27/2012 10:26:28 AM
My pomeranians have grown up with 4 children of all ages. If you teach your children to handle poms with care they make good pets for children too.
jasonwilburn98 - 2/20/2012 5:08:41 AM
Not little kids - if a Pomeranian is dropped, jerked around, stepped on, pulled on, shoved, etc they will bite. About 14yrs, no mine do not tear up stuff - give them bones and toys to chew on, friendlish like mainly their family and one person more than other, they like to play and cuddle

QUESTION: I have rescue a pom a year ago. Neighbors found it running around in their neighborhood and my daughter in law told me about this dog. He has been doing well with the exception that my husband who is handicap and is in the w/ch has a therapist coimg to the house. My pom goes after him barking and almost attacking him.The other day my husbands friend came over and he attacked him as well. He is very aggressive around strangers. I am at work all day and my husband is not very good at positive training and I dont want him to be disapline in a negative way to make him more aggressive or mean. I am almost thinking of getting a muzzle for him. Any other suggestions any one have or have you experienced any type of this behavior in poms?
Anonymous - 1/29/2012 10:22:06 AM
Respond to Question
When the person who found this little guy he had a full body harness on him. His hair grew all around it and after 3 days of the pom getting used to him the pom let him take the harness off. He had pressure marks on his body. He took the dog all around the neighborhood and no one never saw the dog. His hair was matted and so that told him that the dog was not taken care of properly. He found the dog in Feb. covered with mud and frozen snow on the pom. He is very afraid of going down the basement stairs to almost like rigid and shaking. So that is an indication to me of abuse. He backs away from me when I try to pick him up to even carry him to the back yard. He is just fine when going down the front porch of the house. Under the circumstances if I knew that he was properly groom and wasnt afraid of people I would have try to find the owner.
Anonymous - 4/28/2012 3:34:42 PM
Yes, Poms are frequently aggressive as you stated. They typically don't bite but will if provoked. My little female is 11 years old and she always acts that way. I can stop her but if I don't, she will chase guests, barking and growling and trying to nip their heels. If they turn around though, she will run...Have to have a firm hand with Poms but ALWAYS use positive training. They respond very badly to negative training. My 2 are delightful pets and well behaved as long as I do keep them controlled...

My 4 yr old male Pom came up missing from his home in Pine Bluff, Ar. on 11/09/2011 and I am still searching everyday. I would bet someone is looking for the one you have. You get so attached to this breed, it's like losing a child.
Anonymous - 4/8/2012 3:52:53 PM
try keeping your pom on a leash around strangers and having them calmly approach the dog and giving him a treat or praising him. Please put signs up or something for the pom your because it could have just got out & someone is missing there pomy. I doubt that there was a purebred pom that was a stray. I would want to know that my dog was ok and being taken care of. some people look for years for their lost pets

Get him to a vet. Test for diabetes and Cushing's
Anonymous - 5/15/2012 12:41:24 PM
Poms are also problematic with Cushings. Have him tested. Medication can help this. My 11 year old female is beginning to show signs and it is typically older dogs that have issues with it but it doesn't have to be a senior issue. Just discuss the possibilities with your vet.
Anonymous - 4/27/2012 10:22:36 AM
If your Pomeranian is drinking and urinating excessively it could be an indicator of diabetes or liver problems. If this is a new issue I'd seek out a vet. But if not, I always put my dogs water up about 8pm and put it back down around 6am. I think it really helps with housetraining and cuts down night time peeing.

QUESTION: At what age will a Pomeranian stop growing?
Anonymous - 1/20/2012 9:38:17 PM
Respond to Question
Poms are usually full grown by 8 or 9 months. Their hair continues to grow and thicken and even change color for up to 4 years. They may fill out just a little between 1 and 2 years but shouldn't get any taller after 10 months.
Anonymous - 4/27/2012 10:11:58 AM
Poms usually stop growing at age1. They say you can take their size at 6mos and double it to get their adult size. Though I dont quite believe it. Mine usually dont grow much more after the 7or8 mo mark.
