Overview

The Pekingese is commonly referred to as "The Peke". They originated in China over 2000 years ago as a favored and revered Imperial pet. For centuries, only members of the Chinese Imperial Palace could own them. They were considered by the Chinese to be a guardian spirit because of their resemblance to Chinese lions.

Character

The Pekingese is a small, well-balanced breed. They display dignity, a haughty demeanor, and bravery befitting their Chinese origin. They are independent and fearless. The Pekingese is the ultimate aristocrat who expects and demands to be a pampered companion.

Temperament

The Pekingese is sensitive, loving, and extremely affectionate when they choose to be. They are also stubborn and opinionated. They are generally a one-person pet who is deeply devoted to their master. They make excellent watchdogs, as they will give alarm to any unusual noise. They are wary and suspicious of strangers. The Peke does best with older, well-behaved children. They typically do not get along with other pets. They may display jealousy and attempt to show dominance over their master.

Care

The Pekingese requires diligent daily brushing to prevent tangles, knots, and mats. They need to be dry shampooed regularly. Their faces and eyes must be cleaned daily with a damp, soft cloth. They do not tolerate warm or damp climates, and become over-heated or chilled quite quickly. The Peke is prone to breathing problems, eye problems, herniated disc, and dislocated kneecaps. Special care must be given to not overfeed as they gain weight easily.

Coat

The Pekingese is a double-coat breed. The outer-coat is extravagant, long, and straight flowing with profuse feathering. The under-coat is soft and plush in texture. The lavish Pekingese coat is this breeds crowning glory. They come in a wide variety of colors and markings, including parti-color. They are average shedders.

Training

The Pekingese may be difficult to train due to their stoic nature. The crate method is recommended for housebreaking. They will not respond to a harsh, loud, or overly bossy master. They respond best to gentle, consistent, and patient guidance. The Peke requires short sessions of basic obedience and socialization.

Activity

The Pekingese is able to have the majority of their exercise needs met indoors with play sessions. They benefit from, and greatly enjoy short walks a few times per day. They make excellent apartment or condominium dwellers.

QUESTION: Do Pekingese shed?

Anonymous - 11/20/2011 9:54:17 AM

Respond to Question

Yes, but if you brush your Pekingese a lot it will rarely shed.

Anonymous - 1/18/2012 7:32:16 PM

I have six Pekingese and yes mine do, but if you use baby shampoo and brush them about once a week they do not shed bad.

Anonymous - 12/11/2011 2:07:42 PM

Yes, Pekes shed. The simplest way to deal with this (and keep loose hair from taking over your furniture) is to make it a ritual to spend about 1 hour each week (minimum...if you can do it 2-3 times a week, even better) using a fine-toothed brush (like a pin brush) and thoroughly brushing the dog out, making sure you get under the armpits, around the tail area, and in the groin area. Alternatively, you can keep the dog in a modified short cut, which means a brush out every couple of weeks...but most of us with pekes LOVE the long hair (it's just part of being owned by pekes), so we do the other.

QUESTION: my pekingese puppy used to pee and poop in the house, she stopped for about 3 months, then she started again. she repeats that cycle. what do i do?

Anonymous - 11/15/2011 5:31:40 PM

Respond to Question

Yes!! My peke does the exact same thing!! THey are soo smart..

Anonymous - 12/11/2011 10:24:03 PM

I used liver treats for a reward when my pekingese girls used the piddle pads and when they messed up showed them the paper and had them sit on it for about 3 minutes and told them in a stern voice," this is where we go potty". This seemed to work since they are so smart. Now when they go on the paper if I don't see them do it they will come to me and bark to let me know so they can get their treat for being good girls.

My peke was smelling so bad that our furniture and clothes starting to smell like him. We tried different shampoos and such. I finally took him to the vet and he told us that he has skin allergies. We switched him to a grain free food and that seemed to help.

Anonymous - 1/23/2012 5:40:22 PM

I found that dog food makes dogs smell! After switching my little pekingese to all human dog-friendly diet, he smells good! I also bath him once a week ( I know, it's supposed to make them itch, but really if you get rid of the dog food diet, they dont itch anymore) and I use Top Performance Pet Fresh Scent which has a great smell that lasts for 5 days! Just in time for the weekly bath. Really, it smells so good that everytime he wags his tail we all smell the wonderful scent. Kind of like a frangrance candle, but a real live dog!!!

Anonymous - 12/1/2011 10:51:37 AM

QUESTION: I need help....I got a 2 months old pekingese...its her 2nd night in my home. She keeps barking all night as she poops everywhere and steps in it! This is really annoying! Please help! I would really appreciate it!

Anonymous - 10/4/2011 3:30:58 AM

Respond to Question

If you are crating your pekingese put the crate next to your bed so you can reach down and pet her once in awhile to let her know she isn't alone. With ours I just closed off my side of the bed area and puppy proofed it with puppy pads. She slept for at least 4 hours at a time. Just make sure you get up with him or her and take her out to go to the bathroom each time she gets up until she is old enough to hold it.

Anonymous - 10/13/2011 9:52:16 PM

if your pekingese is a pup buy puppy pads they have a smell to them. they are very smart and catch on quick, its better she barks cause mine wouldn't let us touch her for about 3 days and all she did was cry. now she's 2 and is the best dog ever she protects us very well and alerts us before someone even comes up our stairs and she does bite.

QUESTION: My 1 month old Pekingese puppy wont eat.. what should I do?

Anonymous - 9/26/2011 5:09:33 PM

Respond to Question

A 1 month old peke shouldn't be away from it's dog mom yet. But, if that is not an option, they do sell puppy replacement milk at the vet.

Anonymous - 1/23/2012 5:43:18 PM

I used to feed my Pekingese baby rusks when he wouldn't eat, but not too often as they probably have sugar in them. Try runny porridge or Weetabix. I'm sure that there are similar things to this if you live in Europe

Anonymous - 10/25/2011 5:34:53 PM

Start off with milk in a bottle and eventually put it in a bowl then switch the milk to food. If that dosnt work.. well then I'm sorry I don't know. I hope this helped!

Respond to Question

There is a new line of pet sprays at walmart called "OUT!". They have one that you spray on specific areas that you want your dog to urinate on. You just spray a little in your grass once a week.

Anonymous - 9/22/2011 8:25:46 PM

adding to the previous answer which I believe its right, re train your dog, but it would be much easier and give your pekingnese treats when he did it out side :)

Anonymous - 8/21/2011 2:37:42 AM

Try getting a bottle of resolve pet stain. Spray the porch and scrub it good it should neutralize the smell. You may have to do this more than once. If your guest peed in the same spot just steer your pekingnese away from the spot or put something in his way that he can't get under. patience is what you may need a lot of.Good luck!
