Papillon Breed Information

Breed Group: Toy

Weight: 9-10 lbs

Height: 8-11 inches

Color(s): white with patches of any color

Overview

The Papillon originated in the 16th century, a popular lap breed of nobles and aristocracy in Europe. The French translation of Papillon is Butterfly, which they resemble with the white blaze on the forehead as the body, and the fringed ears as the wings. They are quite often considered to be a dainty breed, but in reality are well balanced and lively.

Character

The Papillon is always alert, playful, and elegant. They are intelligent and friendly, taking great delight in meeting and greeting everyone they come into contact with. The Papillon does not display a shy or aggressive nature.

Temperament

The Papillon possesses a petite appearance, but they are a sturdy and hardy breed. They are highly energetic and athletic, but are also calm and patient. They are gentle and affectionate and love to be cuddled. A steady and obedient breed, the Papillon does well with older considerate children. They may display possessiveness of their owner. The Papillon is quick to alert their family to danger or visitors, and may have a propensity to bark at all sights and sounds. However, they are not yappy or high strung. The Papillon is a lovely companion.

Care

The Papillon is a moderate shedder. Therefore, they need to be brushed several times a week. It is important to pay particular attention to the hair behind the ears and on the stomach as these areas are prone to matting. They should only be bathed when necessary, dry shampooing will typically suffice. It is important to keep the pads of their paws trimmed to prevent splaying. The Papillon is prone to various health issues such as cataracts, patella luxation, and Von Willebrands disease.

Coat

The Papillon's coat is long and flowing, and is silky in texture. They have no undercoat. Their coat will fluff at the chest area, and is fringed at their ears. The Papillons coat is white with patches of color, which include black and red. They may also be tri-colored with white body, black and tan markings. The hallmark coloring covers both eyes and ears completely and a white blaze on the forehead. They are moderate shedders.

Training

The Papillon is extremely obedient and has an uncanny ability at problem solving. They require intense socialization at an early age, most notably with cats. They do very well in obedience and agility, and are highly trainable in the competitive show ring. They also make excellent therapy and service dogs. They respond best to consistent, loving, gentle guidance. The Papillon also loves to learn and perform tricks. They are typically easy to housetrain.

Activity

The Papillon loves outdoor exercise and enjoys a daily walk. Yards must be securely fenced, as this breed will use their problem solving skills to escape if left unsupervised. The Papillon is an active indoor breed and some of their exercise needs can be fulfilled with play sessions. They are not recommended for apartment living due to their propensity to bark.

QUESTION: I rescued an 11 month old male papillon two weeks ago, and all was well. 3 days ago, he started getting diarrhea and vomiting. The vomit has a lot of mucus and some red in it (blood or food?). I feed him Iam, and am wondering what it may be. His symptoms are very similar to Pyometra. I am planning on calling the spca where I got him from, and also making a vet appt. Is this common, or possibly a bateria infection? Thanks for your help

They share the crate, but she even occasionally pees in the crate. He is completely housebroken.

QUESTION: I got my Papillon at a shelter 4 months ago, he is around 2 yrs. old. He seemed to get along well with our two cats but all of a sudden he now growls when my husband walks around the house. He doesn't show any aggression just a growl. He is very attached to me. I don't know what to do any suggestions?

Anonymous - 12/22/2011 1:59:37 PM

Respond to Question

I have a male Papillon and he is the same way with me. He is looking at you as though you are his. He may also have been mistreated or teased by a male in his previous home. Papillons are smart dogs and that behavior can be corrected easily. I have started showing him that the behavior is not ok and Ceasar Millans methods do work. His book and his show has helped me in working with my papillon.

Anonymous - 1/18/2012 8:12:12 PM

OMG, my Papillon does the same with my mom! He always barks and growls at her when she comes in the room or walks by. Idk what this is about either, anyone have any ideas?

Maybe your papillon thinks your husband is spending more with the cats

QUESTION: We have 2 Paps. One we've had since birth and the 2nd we adopted from a rescue. Our second, Suzie is the rescue Pap that we've had for 7 years now. She only feels comfortable with my husband, daughter and myself. She is scared of everybody else and will start shaking. Currently, she's been urinating while in her sleep. UTI or stress? Holidays with families & kids. I'm her security blanket. She wants to be standing on my shoulders or hugging my neck. Our 1st Pap, Sunny watches over her when he's not chasing squirrels. When outside, Sunny will be looking out in the yard for things to chase while Suzie will be staring at the door wanting in the house.

I don't know what to do either. Wish I could help you.

QUESTION: My Papillon is 9 years old and has just lost a couple teeth. Is this normal? She seems fine and does not have a problem eating.

Anonymous - 12/20/2011 9:04:30 PM

Respond to Question

You should check with your vet to prevent any more teeth falling out. It could be a dental infection and your papillon could loose all her teeth. And she might be feeling pain but not show it.

The papillon breed is super smart, but they are stuborn too. I circumvented "accidents" with a vet check to make sure nothing was causing it and then employed potty pads which proved to help alot. Goood luck!

QUESTION: I have a large male papillon, 4 years old, and he has been scratching and losing hair. I took him to 3 different vets and the last one found a flea on him but others said it was allergy. I gave him program plus and Capstar but doesn't seem to help with the scratching. Will Advantage plus be better? I've been told, by a breeder, not to give him Comfortis and Trifexis because it has killed or caused seisures. Please help me!

Anonymous - 11/21/2011 11:26:17 AM

Respond to Question

Typically if it's not fleas..and an allergy,It is usually an allergy to something in the food you are feeding him. Ask the vet if changing his food to a diet that has no grains in it will help. If they are allergic to something in the food it is usually wheat or corn or some type of grain in it.Hope this helps.

QUESTION: I just rescued a 12-18 month old papillon 3 weeks ago and am having a very very hard time with housebreaking her. We go outside every 30 mins and some times even less. She will potty outside and then come back inside and pee within minutes. I have taken her to the vet. No UTI, diabetes or kidney issues at all. She holds it all night so it's not a matter of not being able to hold it, but rather just likes to go whenever she pleases. I use a crate when I'm gone or cant watch her but I just can't seem to get her to stop peeing on the carpet no matter how often I take her out. Any suggestions from others with paps that were hard to house break?

Anonymous - 11/20/2011 9:32:47 PM

Respond to Question

My papillon is still not totally housebroken. I've tried all the tricks. Truthfully we would get rid of her except we love her too much. Not sure I would get this breed again. Mine does the exact same thing -- comes in from outside AND THEN GOES. Heavy sigh.

Anonymous - 1/12/2012 1:49:14 PM

Once I put in a doggy door and showed my papillon how to use it. I haven't had another problem. I think she just wants to go when she wants too.

Anonymous - 11/27/2011 3:53:31 AM

QUESTION: Why does my papillon lay next to me and take deep breaths? Also when she gets excited I can feel her heart beating rapidly, Is this normal? Does not happen when we go to the vet? Another Papillon lover

Anonymous - 11/15/2011 7:33:24 PM

Respond to Question

Sometimes it is just kind of like us when we give a deep outward breath to relax. I will say however (and not to scare you), but my eldest papillon does that & she has a heart condition. I would have your Pap checked for a murmur just to be on the safe side. If caught early, the condition can be managed and future health care modified.

QUESTION: We just rescued a female Papillon not more than a week ago. My question is, she has a crate that she sleeps in at night, I get up early for work and my partner doesn't. She hears me and starts to whine and whimper, I take her out to potty and put her back in crate. She whimpers etc. I tell her and my partner also to be quiet, lay down but suzie doesn't. My partner just says take her out and have come to bed with me so she's not whimpering etc. The first few nights she was good when I got up etc. she would go back to her crate etc. Now, she isn't. Is there some way to correct this behavior? besides us telling her to be quiet and we stand our ground. We don't want this habit of her getting into bed with us or my partner when I leave for work. We love suzie so much and she's been through alot before she came into our lives. Thank you for any advice.

Anonymous - 10/24/2011 3:40:45 AM

Respond to Question

Never let her sleep in your bed!!! If you do this, she will never be crate-trained, and you are also risking injury to the dog! The best thing to do is keep her in her crate, and she will eventually learn. It might take a few weeks, or even a few months, but after she is crate-trained, you wont have problems getting her to sleep. I suggest putting a tick-tock clock near her crate, as this will help her fall asleep easier. If you are diligent, and nevr take her in your bed, she will be crate- trained in no time!

Anonymous - 11/4/2011 10:02:35 AM

I have 4 paps, each of them have different routines in the morning. the oldest female needs to be carried outside, the oldest male won't leave his crate, the youngest male jumps in bed with my husband and goes back to sleep and the youngest female races to the doggie door. I always say the same command every morning "lets go hurry" - thats the command to go outside to go potty. each pap has their own small crate they go to bed in, with their own blanket. at night they willingly go into their crate when i say its time for bed. I cheat I say "who wants to go to bed, scooby snack and who needs a carrot" they learned to go into their crate because they get a treat, and i think they feel safe because their crates are small and they have their own blanket. good luck paps are great pets.

QUESTION: Have a 2 year old Papillion I just rescued. Can't get her to come to me. I'm tired of chasing her down. How do I train her to come to me?

Anonymous - 10/23/2011 2:36:02 AM

Respond to Question

Be patient! You do not know what your papillon may have experienced before she became a member of your family. This breed is super lovey and loves to cuddle. Once your new Pap gains trust in you, you will not be able to shake him/her off of you. They are sweet! I wouldn't try the "chasing" since that is likely only scaring the heck out of him/her.

Anonymous - 12/21/2011 11:43:20 AM

I have a rescued pap that is 1 1/2 yrs old. Have treats to help with good behavior. If my dogs; poms and pap do not come, repeat the dogs name and say come authoritivly. If still the pup does not come, walk slowly but determined towards the dog even if it moves around u, do not say a word...till it lay's down in submission then tell her to come turn around if she follows give treat!!! I've rescued poms and paps. trust means everything to these little ones.

Our papillion plays cheerfully with our daughters pet parrot. It is funny to watch and the Pap is very careful with the bird

Our Papillon loves to "hunt" squirrels and rabbits in our back yard. She sprints at the squirrels and then circles the tree the squirrel is on. She's better than my German Shorthaired Pointer!

QUESTION: Can a child with allergies have a papillon puppy or are they no good for them?

Anonymous - 10/13/2011 8:25:28 AM

Respond to Question

Papillons have been said to be good with children with allergies. Some breeders will tell you they do not shed. This is not true, but they do not shed very much at all. If you buy a Papillon from a reputable breeder, the Papillon should not have an under coat. They are single coated. You should be able to lift the hair up on an adult Papillon and see their skin. This is why some people say the are good with children with allergies. They have no undercoat to catch dirt and dander, ect. They are easy to groom and keep clean. Their is no set schedule to bathing a Papillon, just when it gets dirty. Although, I like to bath mine at least every two weeks. I hope this helps and I think a Papillon would be a good choice to try with your child.

QUESTION: Hey everyone! I want a Papillon because: 1- They look very sweet. 2- I have been looking for a dog for a long time. 3- The exercise needs, grooming needs, just about everything is perfect. I have a question, though. I leave for school at about 8:30 am. I am back from school at about 5:00 pm. I know that one of the info passages here says that the Papillon must be fenced in well. I can do that. But what I am worried about is that she will get lonely during the day. My dad and grandparents say they will watch her usually and bring her to their houses sometimes. My mom tells me she will come home on her lunch hour to check on the puppy. The main thing here is I was wondering if this Papillon will be able to stay from 8:30 am to about 10, 12, and 2. Will she be okay? Thanks for responding! :)

Anonymous - 10/12/2011 7:57:41 PM

Respond to Question

We have three dogs, so our Papillon has plenty of company while we are at work. Only thing is that when she's in heat she is more inclined to "go" in the house - even though she's five. Other than that she is a GREAT snuggler!!

Anonymous - 10/22/2011 3:24:46 PM

Papillons do love to be with their owners, but people do have to work, go to school, ect. Have you considered getting a second Papillon for company? In my opinion, this would be a very good remady for your problem and then you will have two precious Paps to love.

I have two male Papillons that do that. It is really annoying. I'm not sure of the cause, but a light spritz of water in their face when they do that has helped tremendously.

QUESTION: My phalene Papillon weighs 18 lounds (7.7 kg). She is not overweight, but LARGE for her breed. Is this common? The vet says her size is a good thing because she is sturdier than a lot of the small Paps he sees. She also likes hiking and the burrs seem to be a problem with her fringes. I brush her every day, but brushing out burrs has ruined her fringes. How can I protect the ear/calotte fringe on a active dog?

Anonymous - 10/5/2011 2:01:07 PM

Respond to Question

This is large for a Papillon/Phalene, but I see now problem and your vet is probably right. It sounds like you need a little larger dog for hiking. My little Papillons get tired pretty quick when we go on walks. As for her fringe you may want to try putting a little silk drops or some kind of human hair oil in them. This should help work out the burrs without tearing and also help grow her fringe back out. I hope this helps. Have a good day.

QUESTION: I'm geting a Papillon in a month. I will be at school from 8:35 and come back at 3:30-4. He is coming at three months old. My mum will be at home and the dog will be at home alone for at most 5 hours. But usually she'll be at home all day. My mum says she will play with him but will not take him out for walks in that period. I however will be taking him out for walks 2 times a day for 2 hours in total and be playing with him at home. We also go on holiday once a year for about 2- 3 weeks but he will be staying with lots of other dogs and will be walked every day. I will groom him every day and bathe him times a week. Is there anything i should change in my schedule?

Anonymous - 9/26/2011 4:28:58 PM

Respond to Question

Well have in mind that a puppy can only hold in for a certain time. So if your papillon is 3 months then he will need to go every 4 hours. When he is 4 months old every 5 hours.. and so forth until adulthood when they can hold it in for 8-9 hours a day. So expect accidents to happen. Also make sure to socialize him with big and small dogs that are not aggressive, because if a big dog gets a hold of him, since they are very fragile they can break their necks easily if a bigger dog shakes him too hard, so always supervise. Hope this helps -nicky
