Overview

The Olde English Bulldogge is a recent and contemporary recreation of the Old English Bulldog which is extinct. Developed during the 1970s by David Leavitt, this breed was created using an English Bulldog, Bullmastiff, American Bulldog, and Pit Bull. It was Mr. Leavitt's intention to produce an Olde English Bulldogge that was not violent in temperament and free of health problems.

Character

A compact, broad, and muscular breed, the Olde English Bulldogge has a well-proportioned body and is medium-sized. They are stout, athletic, powerful, and alert.

Temperament

The Olde English Bulldogge is loyal, trustworthy, and stable. They are docile and friendly but highly capable of protecting their family and property if threatened. This breed is extremely sensitive and bonds closely to their family. Olde English Bulldogge's do well with children, dogs, and other household pets they have been raised with.

Care

Occasional brushing is recommended. Bathing should be done when necessary. The Olde English Bulldogge breed has a tendency to drool and slobber so frequent cleaning of the face is required. They are prone to such health issues as bloat and have a low incidence of hip dysplasia.

Coat

The coat of the Olde English Bulldogge is short, close-fitting, and fine in texture.

Training

Early socialization and obedience is recommended. This breed is intelligent and willing to please. However, they can also be stubborn. They will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods. Training must be done with motivation, consistency, fairness, and patience.

Activity

The Olde English Bulldogge will do well in an apartment provided they are sufficiently exercised and mentally stimulated. If they become bored or lonely they will become destructive. This breed likes to chew, so it is important to provide a safe variety of chew toys. Olde English Bulldogge's thrive on therapy work, agility, and family play.

I have a cat and I recently got an Old English Bulldogge. She is so gentle and great with the cat. They actually play together and the cat will lick the dogs ear to clean it!! Awesome dogs to get...

I have a LabX and an OE Bulldogge. She is 1-1/2 and just brought a Chihuahua pup into the house. All is good. I have not EVER had a problem with my girl being aggressive towards dogs or kids. They are big wannabe lapdogs. Your Maltese should be fine. Introduce them outside and bring them into the yard/house together. You definatly need to be the pack leader with any bully breed, they are sweet but stubborn.

Respond to Question

I have an Old English Bull Dog named Marley and he's a little over a year old. He was the same way when he was a baby, but with a little training and aging has really really calmed him down.

Anonymous - 4/25/2011 11:50:24 AM

Olde English Bulldogge's do start to calm down and by about 18 months it gets a lot better. Take some training classes with them, especially if you do some place training, it is a life saver. When they get a little older they are the most loving dogs ever!

I had an Olde English Bulldogge dog named sadeye - she recently died at almost 3 yrs of age but they do calm down believe me maybe not how you want them to but it gets better lol

QUESTION: I have a 3 year old white olde english bulldogge. He is suffering from very bad allergies. We have tried many things and nothing seems to be helping. Are these dogs prone to allergies and does anyone have any suggestions for me and my poor dog Duke?

Anonymous - 11/30/2010 7:27:49 PM

Respond to Question

I agree with trying a grain free diet. My olde english bulldogge girl is sensitive to corn and grains. I have her on a 80% meat 20%veg kibble, no grains and within a month she was a brand new dog. Definatly try the diet change before resorting to daily dosing of drugs.

Anonymous - 7/20/2011 12:13:38 AM

My Marley is a little over a year and has some allergy's too. I would try the selson shampoo, a better dog food and I do give him children Benedryl every once in a while when I notice the allergy's getting real bad.

Anonymous - 4/25/2011 11:53:56 AM

I would suggest sensitive skin science diet food, my dog does great on it. Also, if they have really runny eye, my vet said go ahead and give put clear eyes drops in their eyes that helps a lot. Also, if allergies are real bad you could try giving them 1 benedryl or a children benedryl everyday!

Anonymous - 4/15/2011 7:11:45 PM

I was having the same problem, I now give a bath in Selson Blue Medicated shampoo. And I haven't been having any problems since. Traci

QUESTION: How do Olde English Bulldogges do in cold weather?

Anonymous - 10/21/2010 1:19:26 AM

Respond to Question

Marley is a little over a year and he LOVE's the Snow. I was worried at first and tried to put a coat on him but he wasn't having it.

Anonymous - 4/25/2011 11:54:45 AM

Olde english bulldogge's usually do great in cold as long as they have been acclimated to the temps . If it is an outside dog it will acclimate as temps change, make sure he has adequate shelter and warm bedding if kept outside in winter. For a house dog that is used to being warm and toasty, then I dont suggest long periods out in the cold. But they would be perfectly fine going out to go potty and play and for walks in cold weather.

massie - 2/1/2011 12:28:09 AM

Depends on the Olde English Bulldogge. I put a vest on Dixie and she loves laying n the snow. But they shouldnt be out for long periods of time. Wactch for split nails.
