Overview

The Norwich Terrier originated in Great Britain in the 19th century. They are one of the smallest Terriers. This breed is low, compact, and strong. The Norwich was bred to hunt rabbits and hares in small packs. Therefore, they tend to be more social than other breeds of Terrier.

Character

The Norwich Terrier is loyal, active, curious, and bold. They are a rugged breed full of spirit with a loving heart. They are fearless and assertive, but are never aggressive or irritable. The Norwich thrives on companionship.

Temperament

The Norwich Terrier is extremely intelligent. Although they prefer human companions and are good with well-behaved children, they are accepting of other dogs. However, they may view cats as prey, so must be introduced to them at an early age. They require early exposure and socialization or they may be wary or timid when they are in unfamiliar situations. The Norwich Terrier loves to be the center of attention, and this spunky busybody loves to be a part of absolutely everything that is happening in their surroundings.

Care

The Norwich Terrier's coat is easy to care for. Daily brushing and combing is important. They require minimal clipping, and should only be bathed when absolutely necessary. In most cases all that is needed is a dry shampooing. Special attention should be given to this breed when they are shedding. They may need to have their coat stripped by a professional groomer a couple of times a year. The Norwich Terrier is a hardy and long-lived breed, but they may suffer from genetic eye disease and back problems.

Coat

The Norwich Terrier has a straight, hard and wiry outer coat, which lies close to the body. They have a thick undercoat, which makes this breed almost weatherproof. The coat of the Norwich comes in such colors as red, wheaten, black and tan. They are low shedding.

Training

The Norwich Terrier is quick to learn, but sometimes has a mind of their own. They may also exhibit a stubborn streak and can be difficult to housetrain. They respond best to firm and consistent rules and guidance. They love to learn tricks given the right method of motivation for them. The Norwich does best when given obedience training.

Activity

The Norwich Terrier is energetic and loves to go on walks or short jogs. However, they must always remain secured on a leash. They do not have a good sense of direction and will be off and running after anything they consider prey. They are a true companion breed who much prefers to be inside with their family. They do not do well if left alone for extended periods of time. They will dig and bark if left alone outside without stimulation. The Norwich will adapt to apartment living provided they are given sufficient exercise.

QUESTION: If you were to keep a norwich terrier in the house, would their hair get all over the place?

Anonymous - 12/4/2010 8:30:14 PM

Respond to Question

My Norwich is 5 yrs old, his hair doesn't get all over, but when i pick him up, it gets on my shirt (I have his hair long, he's due for a cut). I also have very bad allergies, he doesn't bother me at all. He loves to lay outside in the dirt, but I must keep him on a leash, cause he is a true hunter.. very loveable w/people & dogs, esp big dogs.

Anonymous - 6/24/2011 2:31:17 PM

Yes. My norwich is 10 months, he's been stripped and we keep his coat well maintained, and his little light-colored hair is still all over everything.

Anonymous - 3/11/2011 4:04:36 PM

Norwich Terriers are house dogs and should never be kept as an outdoor dog. Not to say they don't enjoy the outdoors! they do! But they are "people dogs" and with you they thrive!

ketkaknl - 12/13/2010 2:45:16 PM

No, but norwich terriers do shed a little

QUESTION: Do they come in solid white with a hint of yellow on ears?

Anonymous - 11/19/2010 12:06:18 AM

Respond to Question

Keep in mind that "red with black tips" is also know as a grizzle. Brindle, a NO NO color, is brown with dark stripes and is often a clue to the dog being a mix (usually of Cairn Terrier). Always buy from a reputable breeder in this breed. AKC (American Kennel Club) is a good way to make sure your pup is a purebred. Another way is to buy from a Norwich Terrier Club of America member. You can find that club listing on the AKC website. ~Carol

ketkaknl - 12/13/2010 2:49:09 PM

never. The listed AKC colors are black and tan, red, wheaten/red, or grizzle. Never brindle. Never red with dark tips as adults. Never cream or white.

QUESTION: I go to school for 6 hours. If I leave a Norwich Terrier alone will it be ok? Should I just leave it in the basment with some toys, a bed and food and water? How much does a norwich terrier cost?About how long does one live to be? Does a Norwich Terrier bark alot? Barking is one of my main things in a dog. I have a spa business in my house and it needs to be really quite at times.
