Character

The Neapolitan Mastiff is a very loyal guardian and will protect his family and territory. This breed is large and powerful, and should not be left unsupervised around small infants, however is very affectionate.

Temperament

The Neapolitan Mastiff, no matter how large or intimidating, is not aggressive. He is very affectionate, and surprisingly gentle. However, he has a strong protective drive making him regularly used as a guard or watchdog. This powerful breed does well with children if they are older, and can do well with other pets if properly socialized and trained.

Care

The Neapolitan Mastiff is very easy to care for grooming wise. Brushing with a rubber brush occasionally will remove dead or loose hair. This is an average shedding breed.

Coat

QUESTION: CAN A BOY BE AROUND GIRLS AND NOT BE AGGRESSIVE? GIRL NEOS WILL THEY FIGHT IF UNDER THE SAME ROOF?

Anonymous - 6/13/2011 6:28:34 PM

Respond to Question

Any mix of males and females can create a problem when the females are in heat. If the girls are fixed and the boy is too than you will have less issues. Two intact males can be a problem together. All females does not mean there will be no fighting. At the end of the day it will depend on the dogs themselves. Generally, you can have females together without a problem.

QUESTION: ARE THERE ALOT OF SHOWS IN NEW YORK AND ATLANTA? WHEN SHOWING A NEO IS IT BEST TO GET A BOY OR GIRL?

Anonymous - 6/13/2011 6:21:46 PM

Respond to Question

If you plan to show, you need to plan on traveling to different states. There are plenty of dogs in the north east to compete against. Atlanta has actually become the spot of choice for the neos because it is a good mid way for all exhibitors. The national specialty is being held there this fall.

QUESTION: HOW DO I PICK A SHOW QUALITY NEO? I WOULD LIKE A VET IN NEW YORK THAT CROPS EARS AND KNOWS ABOUT THE NEO?

Anonymous - 6/13/2011 6:18:23 PM

Respond to Question

You need to read and understand the "standard" for the neo to grasp the qualities that make a good show dog. You equally need to learn and understand the issues that these dogs can have, so you can try to avoid them. It is very tall order for a newbie to be able to pick a show pup. You will need the help of the breeder for that.

I AGREE, THE BEST FOOD FOR NEOS ARE RAW FROZEN MEATS AND SALT WATER FISH (MACAREL. TRY WWW.NEAPOLITAN.COM FOR FULL DIET FOR NEOS. THIS DIETS EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOU DOG AND THEY WILL BE IN GOOD HEALTH.

Anonymous - 12/22/2011 10:00:23 PM

Most Neapolitans are really not fruit eaters! Citrus, grapes and apples (with the core) are not considered good for any dogs, so the same goes for the Mastino. Cooked chicken bones are VERY BAD, however, RAW chicken bones are VERY GOOD! I have been feeding all my dogs raw meat and bones of all types for nearly 10 year now and they love it! NEVER a problem from the bones! I feed chicken quarters, deer rib cages, whole pig feet you name it and they just crunch it down. Try freezing them and feeding them frozen in the hot weather....even more fun for them!

QUESTION: If you were buying a Neapolitan Mastiff, what dry food kibble would you use?

Anonymous - 5/19/2011 4:11:20 AM

Respond to Question

As a puppy Neapolitan Mastiff's need a low protien food, around 26%. To fast of growth causes growing problem in the giant breeds. Low protien slows the growth. Also, no soy. No one brand is best and everyone has the one they love, so just look for one that does not have corn as a first ingredient, generally chicken or chicken products.

QUESTION: Will a male neoNeapolitan Mastiff fight his brother or any male kids he produces?

Anonymous - 5/16/2011 4:06:22 PM

Respond to Question

Overall Neapolitan Mastiff's mature and become macho, brother/father or not! So all may go well for a couple of years and then there could be a dominance battle. Certainly not always, but over two non-neutered males together is not a good idea. Now neutered is a different story. Neutered young, with no learned aggression, things will most likely work out fine.

QUESTION: If you want to get into showing your Neapolitan Mastiff, is it best to have champion bloodlines and champion sired?

Anonymous - 5/16/2011 4:03:57 PM

Respond to Question

The Neapolitan Mastiff is a tough breed to buy. Not all that many breeders show their dogs but that does not mean they are not good dogs. Titled dogs are a bit more of a guarantee that your puppy will follow in their footsteps, but certainly nothing in stone. I have seen MANY Mastino that could be shown and finished but they never get in a ring. So to me, you can find some great dogs with untitled parents in this country. You need to know what you are looking for, but don't depend on a championship to get yourself a quality dog.

QUESTION: Can Neapolitan Mastiff dogs be socialized to be good with cats or do they want to eat them? Also, can they get along with smaller house dogs? The "about this breed" section indicates they don't have much exercise needs but how do they stay healthy with less exercise? I have 35 acres to run but can't let the beagle run due to "beagle-ness"; would the neo hang around home or chase rabbit scent? thanks

Anonymous - 2/1/2011 5:38:11 PM

Respond to Question

My Neapolitan was great with cats and other dogs, as long as its not 2 females or 2 males. Generally they like to hang around the house and their people, but occasionally their nose gets the best of them and they start to wander. Although we did have an occasional wandering our Neo never just took off or ran from you.

QUESTION: what does champion sired mean and how does this affect breeding Neapolitan Mastiffs

Anonymous - 11/16/2010 5:59:51 PM

Respond to Question

It means that sire earned a tittle of chamion at one point in his life. The dog competed against other dogs in the same category and proved to be the best of his kind in the especific venue. This does not "affect" the breeding of Neapolitan Mastiffs, it just adds a higher monetary value to the potential litters the dog is reponsible for.

QUESTION: Why are Nepolian Mastiffs lips so big?

Anonymous - 11/9/2010 7:07:55 PM

Respond to Question

Because we like them that way! It is called selective breeding for traits that are specific to the breed. It is just the desired look for the Mastino. Certainly not for everyone, but neither is the pencil nose of a Collie.
