Lhasa Apso Breed Information

Breed Group: Non-Sporting

Weight: 13-15 lbs

Height: 10-11 inches

Color(s): black, white, brown, gray, cream or particolor

Overview

The Lhasa Apso originated in Tibet, and were only bred by holy men and nobles. Thought to bring good luck, this breed was considered to be sacred. For this reason, the Lhasa were used as watchdogs in monasteries for over 2000 years. They are highly intelligent, with keen instinct and acute hearing.

Character

The Lhasa Apso is a hardy and vigorous breed. They are wary and suspicious of strangers. They exude an air of dignity and also comedy. They are considered to be one of the most affectionate breeds with their main function as that of a companion.

Temperament

The Lhasa Apso displays a dual temperament. They are highly expressive of their love and devotion, but have a mind of their own and want everything their way. They are lively and spirited with spontaneous gaiety. The Lhasa is not recommended for families with small children, or in homes where there are rough or ill behaved children. They make excellent watchdogs because of their heightened sense of hearing. They prefer to be the only pet and thrive on attention. They do not like to be left alone for extended periods of time. For this reason they are not well suited for a two career family. They have a tendency to bite if angered or surprised.

Care

The Lhasa Apso requires daily brushing to prevent tangles and mats. Their coat, if grown long, is extremely high maintenance. They may be bathed or dry shampooed on a regular basis or as necessary. They are very prone to ear infections and eye problems, so check-ups and regular cleaning are important. The Lhasa is susceptible to skin problems if not kept free of parasites. Kidney disease is the most serious health problem found in this breed.

Coat

The Lhasa Apso has a heavy double-coat that is draped over the entire body. Their long coat serves as an insulation barrier, keeping them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The coat grows to floor length, even covering the eyes, which are protected by long eyelashes. The texture of the coat is neither soft nor silky. The Lhasa coat colors include gold, smoke, parti, and slate. They are average shedders.

Training

The Lhasa Apso typically displays an arrogant and obstinate attitude. They may be difficult to housetrain, so the crate method is recommended. Intense early socialization and obedience are a must. They require firm, assertive and consistent commands, and will respond to praise and reward. The Lhasa will take charge if they are not trained clearly as to who is master.

Activity

The Lhasa Apso loves to play indoor games and is quite rambunctious, which largely meets their exercise needs. However, they benefit from outdoor excursions such as a daily walk. They are not suited for outdoor life, so even a small yard is unnecessary. The Lhasa is an excellent apartment and condominium dweller.

The dog was badly treated by previous owner, however the wee dog is now poo'ing all the time in the house and its driving her mad...can anyone give advice on what to do? I dont want to see the wee dog being given away just because its poo'ing over house. What can be done,or does it just need to go to a new home where it will be a pet and not used just for breeding? I have a shih tzu with a lovely nature and would consider taking this lhaso if i knew what the problem was

QUESTION: Hi, It's already really cold winter, not snowing though, i live in the desert. I was wondering if my Lhasa Apso needs a sweater? He doesn't like it at all.

Anonymous - 11/28/2011 11:23:35 AM

Respond to Question

Depends on age & health conditions and the coat you allowed (i mean if your Lhasa Apso is trimmed to the skin, then a good sweater is needed always). I have a mat ready for my 13-yr-old darling to cuddle on (and icepacks wrapped in a towel in summer) or she can choose to just lie on the tiled floor if she feels fine. But I insist on asweater if we go for walks. Watch for signs like shivering or curling legs close to/under tummy esp at 15 deg C or below .. you will know if you watch closely .. hope this helps! ~~Amy

Anonymous - 12/4/2011 11:52:50 AM

Depending on how you have him groomed, how cold it is & how long he's out...Probably not though. It's about 35 degrees here now, and our Lhasa Apso is in a "puppy" trim. He doesn't like cold, but runs out just long enough to do his business. He doesn't mind wearing clothes at all but I've found that it's easier to just have him unclothed on potty runs because he just pees on his clothes.

QUESTION: my lhasa apso is 9 years old and sits down and yelps putting her right leg out. Took her to the vet a few times and they put it down to her anal glands. Had her urine checked and also checked her for pancreas and everything turned out ok. They gave me pain killers and antibiotics for her. 5 days later she is still doing the same. She also feels so heavy and I am not over feeding her. Any one had same problems? Will see vet asap!

Anonymous - 10/7/2011 6:13:01 PM

Respond to Question

Lhasa Apso dogs are suseptible to what I call a "trick" knee...our 4 year old male has one - it slips in and out of place sometimes, and he will sometimes yelp when he jumps off the couch and it happens. If she isn't exhibiting any other symptoms I wouldn't worry - but if she seems to be having trouble walking or jumping I would definitely take her back to the vet.

QUESTION: My 81/2 year old lhasa (male) has suddenly appeared to lose his sight. He struggles to locate me when I come home and has walked into walls and is struggling to get downstairs. He also shakes his head quite a lot, but think this is down to a reoccuring ear infection. Has anyone had any similar problems with their lhasa? Any help will be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Anonymous - 10/7/2011 4:43:42 PM

Respond to Question

Sounds like your Lhasa Apso has been treated before. If it is simply a re occurrence get another treatment and keep the maintenance after recovery (usually a weekly ear-drop). But if his sight is also affected, it could be his nerves or multiple-complications. Don't guess. Get a good vet and a complete check asap. I settled down with the sixth vet when my 13-yr-old was ill in Jun (heartworm history, sudden liver and kidney complications and a tumour in her spleen). She was considered 'a gone case' but we (both she and I) didn't give up. All blood tests were nursed back to normal within a month and stay that way. She is still as playful and happy as ever (except for the medication part)... ~~Amy

QUESTION: My 8 1/2 year old Lhasa Apso is going blind in his left eye. Help??? Please!!!

Anonymous - 9/12/2011 4:33:08 PM

Respond to Question

My 13 yr old Lhasa Apso (picked her up from the streets 10 yrs ago when she was dying from heart worm, est 3 yrs old then) can hardly see where light is dim, and starts to ramp into walls and doors esp when she turns around. Her cornea is undamaged, no cataracts or hostile infections but her retina is aging and her pupils 'remain large' ie her eye muscles are decreasing ther ability to repond to light. Also, she is left with about 2 to 3 small blood vessels each eye(she should have at least 1 or 2 large ones and various small ones for a 30 lb doggy)-- diagnosed as symptoms of old age. Prescrption - anti-oxidation supplements (a Jap product abt usd50 for 180 tabs and Golden Age which costs much less) and UV protection but my darling won't ear sunglasses so I just avold taking her out when the sun is strong and always have curtains 80% at home. Hope this helps anyone who loves ther aging campanions. ~~Amy

Hi my name is christina and our lhasa apso called missy was the same for about 3 weeks crying at night drinking loads and we took her to the vet and isaid her eyes are not the same, then he put the light and put the torch to her eyes and sais almost sure she is blind. Just do everything as normal keep her food in the same place and keep a radio on if you leave her at home when at work. We are having problems with her walking now as she wants to turn back. Do not spoil her with food because when they go blind they panic thinking how will I see when my next meal is coming from so they will bark to get fed all the time. It is so sad and we have to go on as normal so good luck hope this helps love missy xx

Hi our 9 year ols lhasa apso has just gone blind in both eyes, what a shock for us! Although for 3 weeks she has been acting strange crying at night and we notice when we put something down she would sniff and walk by it. How is your dog and what changes did you make? Sad times, but will still spoil her rotten xx

I took my 8 1/2 lhasa to the vet today as he appeared to have lost his sight. Was told that he is blind in his right eye and the left isn't all that great either. I would get him/her to the vets to get it checked out as the vet said that it looked like Jasper had had a number of eye problems as it looked scarred (I'v never known him to have any problems at all with his eyes). Needless to say I felt dreadful as im now thinking that it could have been prevented! However, he seems to be really happy and is coping better than I am I think. Hope your little bundle is ok.

QUESTION: my Lhasa is 9 mo. He is remarkably smart and does well with commands, untill he gets out front and he is hard headed about coming back when I call him but in time I'm sure that will be corrected. My concern is this, he doesn't chase his tail, but when he lays down he will grab it and act like he is trying to pull it off! I have watched him and he will have this tug of war game for a good 2-3 min. He was wormed in april and I hear you should only do this 2 times a year. Any ideas on what could be going on?

QUESTION: We have a 5 1/2 month old Lhasa Apso that we've had for 2 months now that we just adore. She has the best personality and seems really smart. Trouble is, I cannot seem to housebreak her. I've read all the books and do everything that is suggested yet everytime we let her run loose in the house she pees and/or poops. How long will it take before she is housebroken?

Anonymous - 8/22/2011 5:47:43 PM

Respond to Question

I have a 2 year old Lhasa that is totally golden about doing his business "outdoors"...but .if for some rare reason we forget to take him outside or if we are away too long, he knows he can use the walk-in shower (we have a piddle pad down all the time for any emergency), i.e. a heavy rainstorm.

Anonymous - 12/6/2011 3:06:12 AM

Make sure you take your Lhasa Apso out every ten mins and only respond to her when she does a pee or poo. Get a crate and if she does pee or poo any where put her in it and dont get her out till she has stopped barking for 5 mins that way she is not getting attention for peeing and pooing in the house and also not getting attention for barking. its hard wok but it really does work it does take time

Anonymous - 9/18/2011 11:58:07 AM

Didn't see anyone respond - I have an 11 yr old llasa - house training took awhile - they get the point but spend awhile taking compliance on board - keep at it and make sure you're consistently, lovingly assertive - you'll get there and will have years of joy together

QUESTION: what does cherry eyes mean?

Anonymous - 8/20/2011 5:09:14 PM

Respond to Question

My Lhasa, Meeko, had cherry eye for a long time and he had to have 2 surgeries on it. o_o It's where the tear duct breaks loose and pops out the corner of his eye.

Anonymous - 9/6/2011 2:35:57 AM

Cherry eye is an allergic reaction. The glans in the eye tend to pop out. My Lhasa is going on 5 years old and has cherry eye. The vets explain that it is only cosmetic. Just make sure they say clean and you will be okay. Oh and it doesn't both her at all.

QUESTION: i just bought a lhasa apso puppy today - he is 7 months old and his owner told us to feed him on dry food with porage oats mixed in it. Im wanting to put him on puppy tin food would that do him any harm?

Anonymous - 8/7/2011 7:05:51 PM

Respond to Question

She probably told you that because that is what she was feeding. If you change your lhasa apso's diet don't just go to another kind of food. Gradually move them over to what you would like to feed, if you switch over all of a sudden they will have diarrhea problems. Another thing, dont feed them lamb and rice products.

Anonymous - 7/31/2011 11:22:17 AM
