Kuvasz Breed Information

Breed Group: Working

Weight: Male: 100-115; Female: 70-90 lbs

Height: Male: 28-30; Female: 26-28 inches

Color(s): white

Overview

The Kuvasz is incredibly intelligent, is very devoted and loyal, and makes an excellent working dog. This breed does have a strong protective instinct over his family and territory, which makes him a good watchdog.

Character

The Kuvasz is somewhat suspicious of strangers and requires much socialization to avoid shyness or aggressiveness. A very obedient breed, this dog is very willing to protect his family no matter what the circumstances.

Temperament

This breed has been used in herding so he does have a protective instinct, which makes him not quite right for the average family. However, he can do well with children providing they are always supervised. The Kuvasz is also very gentle and affectionate towards his family.

Care

The Kuvasz should be brushed on a regular basis all the way down to the undercoat. This will remove excess hair during shedding, and will keep the hair free from mats. This breed does best in colder climates mentally, and physically. In warmer climates, the Kuvasz tends to shed quite a bit all year round, while in cooler weather, he sheds seasonally.

Coat

The Kuvasz has a very sturdy double coat. The outercoat should always remain moderately coarse, and should never be smooth. The undercoat is fine, soft, and somewhat silky. This breed may have either a straight or wavy coat.

Training

This breed is naturally very intelligent and obedient, however he should require a firm handler yet gentle training as this breed can be sensitive to the tone of your voice. The Kuvasz does remarkably well in herding and obedience.

Activity

The Kuvasz should have regular exercise, preferably daily. This breed bores easily and can become destructive without the proper entertainment, so he should always have room to run. A medium fenced yard will suffice.

Ask a Question Kuvasz Questions & Answers

QUESTION: I have a 14 month Male Berner who is absolutely gorgeous and has a fantastic demeanor. We were thinking of getting a Kuvasz but were not sure whether the Kuvasz (Male or Female) would be an issue with the Berner. Thanks a ton!

Respond to Question

In general, there should not be an issue, I know a gal who owns Kuvasz and Berners. The issue is individual dogs, and particularly at what ages you get them/introduce them. Again in general, getting a female Kuvasz (is your Berner neutered??) is the safest bet for making fast friends, but males can get along just fine. In Kuvasz, if any combination is more likely to have issue it's two females not getting along. Good luck!

QUESTION: Are Kuvasz good with children?

Anonymous - 4/6/2011 10:33:42 PM

Respond to Question

Are the children good with dogs? If the children are dog savvy and you know what makes a kuvasz tic, then kuvasz can be quite nurturing with children and will lay down their lives for their families.

QUESTION: I am about to get a Kuvasz puppy, but the boy that my children liked from the litter has slight pink on the nose and pads are pink too. I believe both should be black. The breeder, a very reputable one in southern Ontario, says that the nose and the pads will turn black soon. Is this so? I do not mind the pads, but a little streak of pink on the nose in Kuvasz, if it does not go away, will certainly look odd. Any advice?

Respond to Question

If it's a winter/late spring Kuvasz litter the pigment can be slow coming in. I had one pup in Alaska that had all pink pads at 8 weeks, by the time he was in the show ring at 6 months he had the darkest pigment.

QUESTION: Can there be a miniature Kuvasz? My family bought a dog 10 years ago, she looks like a Kuvsz but is super small. She also looks like a mini golden retriever, but her furr and characteristics fit more with the Kuvasz.

Respond to Question

The kuvasz in the American seem to be getting smaller and smaller but females are 24" and above at the shoulders (26" and above is preferred) and males should be 28" and above at the shoulders. Anything smaller is not a kuvasz.

glaciercreek - 4/10/2011 6:59:39 PM

An exceptionally small female Kuvasz can be the size of a Golden Retriever, but will never be the size of a Cocker spaniel :-)

QUESTION: Is this dog (Kuvasz) good with cats?

Anonymous - 11/16/2010 10:22:20 AM

Respond to Question

My Kuvasz gets along well with our cat and is always trying to lick her!

Anonymous - 1/26/2012 10:19:20 PM

Depends on bonding. I will not take a chance if Kuvasz are not socialized with people and other animals. Although Kuvasz is a livestock guarding breed, in order to be effective and safe, Kuvasz puppies have to be introduced to sheeps and goats early in their lives so that they can bond with the livestock. You just can't expect a fully grown Kuvasz, not bonded with the herd in his / her life, to be thrown in and work wonders.

I had a cat in addition to our 2 Kuvasok (male and female) and had no problems at all. The cat became part of the "herd" and everyone got along just fine.

QUESTION: Is the kuvasz coat wavy or curly?

Anonymous - 10/13/2010 1:41:48 PM

Respond to Question

The Americans have allowed straight coats for some odd reason. Straight coats are a disqualification in Europe. Most ethical kuvasz breeders strive for wavy coats (which appear curled, versus the curly/nappy coat of the poodle)

glaciercreek - 4/10/2011 6:58:14 PM

i've seen both, some are curly like the original kuvasz, but usually america and canada will have them wavy/fluffly with the big mane. if you look up the history of kuvasz and look at todays american kuvasz you'll see the difference.

hawaiihill - 11/16/2010 7:43:12 PM

The Kuvasz coat is wavy.
