QUESTION: In Cuba what were Havanese dogs bred for example : hunting, swimming, or anything else that you might have in mind.
Anonymous - 12/23/2011 4:49:08 PM
Respond to Question
From all the literature I have read and researched, I believe that Havanese were bred simply as companions and to give as gifts. That is why the were considered a dog of the aristocrats. That is also why many of them were killed after the Cuban Revolution when Castro seized power. To truly find out what this breed's "job" was you would probably have to research its origin breeds. A good starting point would be Bichon. My dog seems to love to hunt moles. He has an excellent sense of smell and will track them from hill to hill and when he hears one, he will start to dig feverishly. I have seen him catch one digging out of a mole hill. My dog approached quickly, stopped and stayed motionless for a couple of minutes and when the mole surfaced, he pounced and grabbed the mole. He shook it violently and released. Sorry if the detail is too gory, but hope this helps.

I have read that Havanese were used for gathering, "herding" the chickens .

QUESTION: I rescued a little dog last year, was told he was a puppy mill puppy, a designer dog that didn't get sold..He is adorable. I have figured he was part Shih Tzu, and now that I have come across the Havanese breed, I am wondering if that is what he is..Is there any way I can send a picture..He has curly hair, that gets matted if not brushed frequently, and has a long curly tail? He is black and white.
Thanks,

- how long can i leave a havanese alone at home
Anonymous - 12/20/2011 9:50:01 PM
Respond to Question
It all depends on their raising. My havanese stay in the kitchen by themselves while I am at work. I work 11 hour shifts. They have a doggie door available, each other, food and water. There are some that come from situations that will have great seperation anxiety and can't be left without having destruction constantly. but they can get used to a routine.

QUESTION: We were told our 7 month old puppy was a Shih Tzu but the groomer said he is Havanese which by all accounts he does seem to be but at 7 months he weighs 17 lbs and is larger than any of his siblings. Is this normal for him to be larger?
Anonymous - 12/17/2011 10:28:25 AM
Respond to Question
Not true! We have 2 Havanese...both from the same local breeder and are brother and sister. She is a little female weighing only 13 pounds and he is a big male weighing in at 23 pounds! He is the picture perfect Havanese, but is a big boy for the breed! Your dog is not a mix! Sometimes they can grow larger than normal! My male has been larger since day one and we've had him since he was 9 weeks old!
Anonymous - 12/24/2011 8:44:40 AM
17 lbs is a very large havanese. It has to be a mix. As far as the confusion of the breeds, a Shih is easy to identify by the pug nose and the buggy eyes. The havanese will have a longer nose and large almond shaped eyes. 17 lbs for either breed is way outside of standard.

QUESTION: My female Havanese ( will be one in February) has started scratching on walls, whining, and sometimes putting herself in the corner. I really don't know what to make of this, I'm home a lot with her, and she has dog companions. She is very well adjusted or at least I thought. Any ideas on why she may be doing this?

Havanese are very loyal and need attention from a single owner. If you lavish praise on your other dogs make sure your Havanese gets extra praise. In addition, DO NOT YELL or scold your Havanese! They take every bad word to heart!

Anonymous - 11/25/2011 6:15:48 PM
Respond to Question
My vet said that it's also like them trying to clear their throat. I have one little havanese girl who has teary eyes occassionally, that is when she does it the most, it's when she has a runny. What she is doing is trying to clear her throat due to the drainage, but nothing to worry about. She is also my dog that has allergies.
afaust1 - 1/2/2012 1:18:34 PM
Those sounds are called reverse hiccuping! When your dog does this, gently put him/her on your lap and you'll feel a small hiccup as he's doing it! My little girl Havanese does this once in awhile! Ask your breeder or vet!
Anonymous - 12/24/2011 8:47:03 AM
I believe he is making a snoring, grunting type of noise, I assume? If he is, he is simply sneezing. Dogs sneeze in reverse to people (in instead of out) Could be allergies, dust, a cold. Nothing much to worry about.

QUESTION: I have a white male Havanese. He is sweet but very moody. He is very loving to family, but a great watch dog. He is really smart and has beautiful fine silky hair. He is very muscular and he weighs 19lbs. He was purchased from a quality breeder. We have papers and appropriate certifications. Love him but.... I am confused about his size. Anyone heard of Monster Havanese Dogs
Anonymous - 11/13/2011 4:01:03 PM
Respond to Question
Yes, there are such things. As a havanese breeder, when breeding, we want to create one within the breed standards, but sometimes that is not going to happen. Things we think about are, if you breed with large to a large, you get larger. How do you think there are 3 schnauzer sizes? They all came from the original Schnauzer bloodline, just bred bigger and bigger. There are miniature, standard, and giant. It doesn't mean that they don't need love too, but as a breeder, that is why we place them in "Pet" families, not to breed with. A puppy mill will not consider this, they breed whatever they can get their hands on, and to whatever dogs. So Yes, there are monster size havanese out there.
afaust1 - 1/2/2012 1:22:50 PM
My male is a whopping 23 pounds and is a picture perfect Havanese! Some are just big and very strong like mine.
Anonymous - 12/24/2011 8:48:41 AM
That is very large for a Havanese. 8-13 lbs is the normal size but they can be larger. How tall is he at the shoulder?
grandhavanese - 12/20/2011 10:15:20 PM
My Chocolate & White Havanese (Harrison) is expected to be around 25lbs. He is 5 months & already weighs 15lbs so he might end up bigger than expected. I have read of many over 20lbs so I believe it is not that uncommon. I got Harrison from a quailty breeder also.

Anonymous - 10/10/2011 11:52:38 AM
Respond to Question
That is called line-breeding. When there are common ancesters. Many of times, you can get some very nice puppies. It is not recommended that this be done over and over because you increase your risk of duplicating a non-desired trait. It is not detramental to the puppy. You would have to look at the puppy to evaluate for those types of situations.

This is a common practice with a lot of breeders.

QUESTION: We've had our Havanese for about a month and a half now, she's about 3 or 4 yrs old. We are concerned about her breathing. Usually at night she seems like she is having trouble breathing. She gets really still and it's almost like she stops breathing. She makes squeaking/snoring noises too. Tonight I brought her in from a walk today and she looked at if she got really weak and almost fell over. Scared us to death. She slept a while and hours later she was her perky playful self again. I know she was just under stress over 4th of July fireworks and am curious what others think. I've also heard that it's just this breed's anatomy for breathing issues when they are really okay??? QUESTION: Has anyone had any trouble potty training their Havanese puppy? I've had my puppy for two months now and I'm not sure we've made any progress. I try to be consistant and I'm using a crate, but doggone it, she has accidents every single day. . . . even though I take her out often and she goes everytime I take her out. What's the prob? Sometimes she goes in the house as soon as she comes in from outside!

Respond to Question
I have a male Havanese. They are a stubborn breed. I had big trouble. It took him months. The only thing that worked was isolation...If he had accident, I immediately gave him time out for about 40 minutes. No toys...nothing. In the bathroom by himself.I said only "BAD DOG" He hated it. He cried. We ignored him. Finally, he got it. Also, reward him and make a big deal after he is successful.Pierre started going to the door just to get a treat. Sometimes he sits there for no reason.

I have a Havanese and I am having the same trouble. He will go as soon as I bring him back into the house. I would be interested in suggestions too.
Anonymous - 9/29/2011 12:33:35 AM
We have been very fortunate that our newly adopted Havanese (2 1/2 years old) was already potty trained when we got him. Since he is so trainable, we trained him to ring a bell when he has to go potty.
Anonymous - 9/3/2011 10:29:19 PM
My havanese only will go on the pad...as gross as that sounds. I take her outside, and she refuses to pee until she goes inside on the pad. They are a quirky breed.
Anonymous - 8/28/2011 12:01:26 PM
if you your havanese go to the door, take her outside and if she doesnt do that try using training pads
Anonymous - 8/20/2011 2:14:46 PM
(First rule out any possible physical bladder problem.)You have to walk in a circle where you want your Havanese to go and give the SAME verbal command and no other talking --just a kibble and pats n hugs to reward. Lots of non-verbal reward. Do not resume talking till inside. You may be overpraising her for many dif' things and she is confused? Your consistency will pay off---do not give up! You may be an owner who talks fast or too much in general? No offense intended! Aggie.

My little Havanese, Max, is 3 years old and still pottys in the house. Sometimes right after I take him outside. The other day I thought he was eating because I heard the food dish rattling turns out he had went potty and was trying to cover it up with his food dish. If he is that smart, why dosen't he go potty outside? It has to be something I am doing wrong....

I've had four different breeds(rescued) but this little one was like a chew terminater. My saving grace was deer antler. It is all naturally shed deer (or elk) antler, made of pure calcium, lasts about 3 weeks, doesnt splinter off, and runs about $10 a bone. I found(thx to another owners suggestion) at a pet store that only sells natural foods and treats, but saw the elk antlers at the annual dog show. Thier site is venisonjoes.com .

All puppies will chew! Provide your Havanese puppy with appropriate toys and things to chew and praise the puppy when s/he chews the appropriate toys. Puppy proof your house to help with the chewing and other common issues of having a young dog. Crate train your puppy so your house is "chew-proof" while you're out. Another good idea is to use the "tether method", that is to keep the leash on your puppy while it's out of the crate so you can give corrections and praise immediately.

I was worried about my 8 month old Havanese because she eats so very little. The vet told me not to worry about it. . . that if she's hungry, she'll eat. He said many people feed their puppies/dogs too much and they get overweight and develop health issues. I feed her Science Diet. I offer it to her morning, noon and early evening. . . but her eating preference is mid-afternoon; and, like I said she doesn't eat much at all. But she's beautiful, healthy and happy. She drinks a lot of water.

I feed my Havanese Life's Abundance and I feel it's a very good food. You can order it from www.lifesabundance.com. I feed him three times a day like my vet recommends. A can of food in the morning and then at noon and evening some dry food. What he can eat in about 15 to 20 minutes.

Anonymous - 8/13/2011 4:27:57 PM
I think you can offer food 3x times a day. The amount that you will be offering will be smaller because you are giving breakfast, lunch and dinner. I suggest you feed your Havanese in the morning at 7 AM, for example, around noon, and around 6 PM. I would highly recommend that you DO NOT just leave food out as it will cause issues with pottying. As for what kind, I look for food that is natural and does not have the "chicken by-products" as the first ingredient.
Anonymous - 7/23/2011 7:57:43 PM
Some dogs love carrots, and they can eat rice with chicken. Puppies usually need three meals a day and for adults two meals. You should get your havanese attention and put the food down for only 15-20 minitues, this is because if you let food lay around all day, this can encourage over eating and obesity. Do not worry if he dosent eat one of his meals someday. Take Care!

QUESTION: I have a 4 year old Havanese which I love to death. When I first brought him home he loved to go on walks and would greet all the dogs with his fun lovely personality. In the past year for some reason he has become very difficult to walk around other dogs as he becomes very aggressive, barks and pulls on the leash as if he wants to attach them. He is okay with the dogs that knows, but wants nothing to do with other dogs and he lets them know it. Any answers????

try watching "The Dog Whisperer" in regards to your Havanese's aggressive behavior towards other dogs. It might be that he lacks social skills and that you need to be more dominant as the leader towards your dog because you indicate that he is "difficult to walk" and that is one of the problems if youre going to try to control him. I hope this helps in any manner. Take care!

QUESTION: Now that it is very warm outside (82 degrees or so) my 10 month old Havanese seems to need to rest every 2 blocks. I have brought a spray bottle filled with water and spray her a bit and let her drink the water in the bottle. Is it normal for a puppy of this breed to be intolerant of warm weather?
Anonymous - 6/10/2011 3:12:32 PM
Respond to Question
I live in Georgia and it is also warm here. The Havanese originate from Havana, Cuba and are designed for being in the heat. Their coat is actually not wooly, but light and protects them from the sun. The Havanese is NOT so tolerant of cold weather, and they need to be protected. This is only in general. I guess it would depend on the age and how much previous exposure your dog has had to that environment. Mine loved being outside in the spring and summer, but more of a relaxed setting such as, watching me in the garden. He didn't like heat and strenuous exercise. Anyway, hope that helps.

We have a female havanese. I had a similar problem with her. My sister is a vet & she recommended that when our puppy does that for me to say no, no & pick her up. Put her in the child's lap & let them pet her with me right there. In a few minutes let her down & allow her to go back to what she was doing. Minutes later let the child approach her again, & continue the with the same response if she grows. We did this four times on the fifth time she submitted to the child & let her hold her. However, the next day we had to
repeat this cycle. It took about a wk of being consistent before she knew she was not the boss. We have had no problems since then
Dogs r pack animals & they need to know who their leader is. B careful to b gentle but firm. All u need to do is drop the tone of your voice & they quickly respond.

Our Havenese was great with children. Perhaps the puppy was picked up incorrectly, by one of the children. I would hold the dog and have the children inteact individually. After a few times, place the dog on one childs lap at a time. This should be done in a quiet atmosphere - with only one child at a time. Eventually the dog will realise there is nothing to fear. The kids will be best friends with the dog- My kids miss our little guy since he passed!!

I have a Shih Zhu with colitis and my vet thinks it is because of food allergies. I discovered in all of the research I have done that they can develop food allergies at any time so maybe this is the problem with her dog. I stopped giving her chicken and put her on a homemade diet of lamb patties, oatmeal, brown rice, green beans & apples. She is doing so much better since she started eating this. I also have to watch the treats that she gets.....there are so many treats that have propylene glycol which can cause them to have diarrhea as well. So have your daughter check the food/treats she give him to see if that ingredient is in any of it.

Our havanese had unexplained amounts of diarrhea and vet couldn't figure out. After expensive trips, meds and special foods, the kindly pet shop owner where I buy our regular dog food suggested Yummy Tum Tum (sp?) - it's canned, organic sweet potato and canned, organic pumpkin. You only give a little for one little havanese, so I scooped out and froze in an ice cube tray and gave one of each a day. Defrost in microwave, or sit out. Our pup likes to eat off a spoon. Whenever she starts showing signs of a loose stool, I pull out a few cubes.
