QUESTION: I really want a graet dane but I heard they can be droolers is this true if so how much ?
Anonymous - 1/28/2012 1:31:25 PM
Respond to Question
I have had great danes my whole life. They do drool a little usually after they eat or drink. The rest of the time they are usually drool-free. I have found any drool they have is well worth having this breed, they are an absolute joy to own.

QUESTION: my great dane is 38in and 150 ponds (so very large!!!) how long do you think he is going to live.
Anonymous - 1/23/2012 10:06:05 PM
Respond to Question
I have had 7 or 8 great danes. Their average life span is about 8 years. They usually have heart issues and hip dysplasia problems due to their size..they also suffer from bloat (stomach and digestive issues)and have problems with arthritis.

My Great Dane too, Great Danes live for 5 or 6 years

QUESTION: Why do some great dane's have pointed ears? Can they all have pointed ears? Just like that look
Anonymous - 1/4/2012 5:52:39 PM
Respond to Question
To break the tie here, danes are NOT born with their ears like this..many people crop them for show, or because they just like the look. They have naturally floppy ears.
Anonymous - 1/30/2012 6:59:18 PM
Great Danes are NOT born with pointed ears they naturally have floppy ears, for show people crop them so they look more uniform.
Anonymous - 1/30/2012 1:59:27 PM
Great danes are born like this
Anonymous - 1/26/2012 12:37:45 PM
I had my Dane's ears cropped when he was a puppy. He had tape on for the first week and after we took the tape off they stood on their on. He never acted like it bothered him at all and everyone that has seen his ears say they're the best they have seen.
Anonymous - 1/10/2012 10:18:47 PM
My dane has natural ears, and unless you are showing your dane I would recommend not peaking the ears. It does make the dog look taller and more aggressive, but at that height and weight people are afraid of them as it is. If its a family dog go with the natural floppy ears. They keep dirt out and are fun to play with. Not to mention you don't have to deal with the care of the surgery and putting your young puppy through that pain.
Anonymous - 1/8/2012 9:57:58 PM
THEY ARE BORN THAT WAY. DANES ARE BEAUTIFUL CROPPED AND UN~CROPPED. ITS AN OWNERS CHOICE. I DONT CROP MINE I LOVE THE GOOFY LOOKINGNESS ESP AS A PUP ALL CLUMBSY.
Anonymous - 1/8/2012 10:27:13 AM
Danes that have pointed ears are for show. It's something called cropping. Cropping ears is incredibly painful. Essentially they shave a third of the ear off and The ears are wrapped for several weeks until they stand to a point. The healing process after the wrap is tsken off can take up to a year. Naturally, a Danes ears are down. Like a labs ears but much larger. My Dane has natural ears however, I do like the pointed ears. I just couldn't put my puppy through that pain.

QUESTION: My Dane is 8 months old and 120 pounds. Is this a normal size for a male at this age?
Anonymous - 1/3/2012 3:04:40 AM
Respond to Question
Oh wonderful hahah. He is already huge! This is the person who wrote the question.
Anonymous - 1/31/2012 7:21:21 PM
That is very tall for a young great dane. Usually that is the height for a full grown dane. They will continue to grow and get bulkier until they are about 2 years old. Sounds like he will be huge!!!
Anonymous - 1/30/2012 7:01:31 PM
Anonymous - 1/26/2012 12:38:00 PM
He is also 36 inches tall... So he is not fat by any means. This is the person who wrote the question btw:]
Anonymous - 1/11/2012 12:29:54 AM
Thats a little too large....you really need to watch their weight cause they get joint problems and you don't want that at a young age. My dane is 170 lbs at 2 years, so yours might be too large. Cut back on his food and any extras he gets? I would recommend a vet over anything else.

QUESTION: I got a great dane puppy at 9 weeks old and im allergic to her so I keep her outside I really want her to stay inside and allergy shot takes too long - what can I do ?
Anonymous - 12/25/2011 9:43:33 PM
Respond to Question
I agree, I have a Great Dane and I am allergic. She never leaves my side. These dogs are meant to be a friend not a dog. They don't do well if they don't get their interaction hourly. I call them Velcro dogs as she never leaves my side and we both like it that way. If you don't want you Dane in the house be kind and caring and find someone willing to make a few sacrifices for the dog. They will certainly make up for them and make someone very happy.
Anonymous - 1/10/2012 6:31:02 AM
Not to sound rude but you didn't do your homework before you got a Dane. Great Danes are NOT out door dogs. They need people. Without people a Dane can go absolutely insane. They can get aggressive and not to mention their fur. They have a thin coat. If they get to hot or cold it can cause health problems. As for the allergies- if your not willing to do the shot then why get the puppy? So it takes some time... In the end your puppy will appreciate being inside and being around you...

QUESTION: Just got an 8 week old Great Dane puppy. He seems a bit short and a little thin. He is probably 10-15 pounds and only 13.5" tall from shoulders to floor. Should I be concerned? He is currently on Beneful food, but we will be switching him to Innova (I think).
Anonymous - 12/22/2011 11:09:30 PM
Respond to Question
Great Danes are always thin and are the tallest breed in the world
Anonymous - 1/26/2012 12:38:49 PM
Beneful is a good food fed it to all my danes I am on my third one now just got a pup last week. Take it to the vet may have worms or some other parasite.
Anonymous - 1/8/2012 10:23:36 AM
That is a bit small... My great dane pup was 25 pounds and 16 inches at that age... His food does play a big role. You have to be aware of the protein content and the fat content. To much protein will give your dog bone and joint problems before it even reaches full maturity. Never go above 24% protein and 14% fat. I feed mine Kirkland brand from Costco. Diamond brand is the equivalent to that but Costco is cheaper. My Dane is now 8.5 months old and 35 inches tall and 120 pounds. Normal Kirkland dog food is the only brand I recommend, the one in the green bag. Or the red bag of Natures Domain, another Kirkland brand. Hope this helps.

QUESTION: How many times should a great dane female get bred to get a good litter size?
Anonymous - 12/22/2011 12:43:04 AM
Respond to Question
QUESTION: I have a great dane, and she's 9 months, it seems like she stopped growing. Has she stopped growing? or?
When I last weighed her she was 7 months and she was 77.8 pounds. So I don't know if she's done growing or not.
Anonymous - 12/21/2011 10:00:46 PM
Respond to Question
A lot depends on the parents. My great dane topped out at 170 lbs full grown. But I remember when he was rounding that one year stage. About this time you could be getting used to the "larger size" since you see the dog so often (so it might not look like she is growing). I wouldn't think too much into it, but if she is not 100 lbs by 12-14 months I would have her checked out by a vet. Females are known to come in a various amount of sizes (more than males). But they are on average between 120-145 lbs and reach that after about 2 years. You still got a long while yet, she might be a late bloomer.
Anonymous - 1/8/2012 9:50:43 PM
I have a pure Great Dane. She grew til she was two years old. She did seem to slow at certain times and also because I lived with her she always looked the same others would say wow shes getting big.
Anonymous - 1/8/2012 10:25:17 AM
yeah, she's a purebred, so I don't know why she's not growing.
Anonymous - 12/22/2011 6:21:18 PM
I hope she continues to grow, at a year our female danes weighed over 100 pounds at 32 inches at the shoulder. Is your dane pure bred?

QUESTION: Is it true that when Great Dane's get old they have bone problems? Maybe even to not be able to walk??
Anonymous - 12/12/2011 11:41:28 PM
Respond to Question
They may develop hip dysplasia when they get older. They may also lose the ability to walk do to spinal nerve damage. A Great Dane descends from a Greyhound and a Mastiff: they have large heads on a thin body. Having them grow slowly (large breed puppy food), not running with them when they are young and keeping them at a healthy weight throughout life helps keep them healthy longer and minimizes they likelihood they will have issues.

QUESTION: Are Great Danes smart?
Anonymous - 10/24/2011 9:25:22 PM
Respond to Question
Yes but Great Danes are sometimes so stupid
Anonymous - 1/26/2012 12:41:54 PM
In my experience, no. I've have had Danes, a Samoyed and a Border Collie. My Samoyed and Collie could learn and retain information very quickly. My Danes took a lot of effort to train and was the dunce of her doggy class. She with mastered the basic commands: no, sit, stay, come, don't lean, don't pull. And housebreaking her was doable. But don't expect them to do tricks. However lack of intelligence is a pro, not a con. The Samoyed was exhausting: she was constantly trying to outsmart you.
Anonymous - 1/17/2012 5:38:38 PM
yes great danes are very smart dogs im a volunteer for humane society with animals i work with dogs we had these two great danes with us for a while the female was very aggrisve she didn't like men i think she had been abused she only likes women any time i went out side she would be happy to see me but if a guy were to come in the same the outside play area she would she push me back with her body she was proctecting me until they would go back to the other side of the play area where we let the dogs out and play they are very smart we had to put her down to sleep we tried everything to help her there is nonthing we could do about it she was getting to the point she would bite anyone so we had to put her down to sleep we didn't want to we had to. but give them lots of love

I've been with Great Danes for all of my 36 years, that been said, I know more people that should takes notes from a Dane for this breed out smarts, out wits, and out stands more than humanly possible. As I told my old boy Jake many times if he could form real words out his mouth and had apposing thumbs, human he would be. Careful not to be out smarted by this above norm breed
Anonymous - 11/3/2011 9:17:15 PM
It depends on what your "smart" criteria are. Great Danes are trainable & independent thinkers.

QUESTION: Hi. I plan on getting a dog as soon as I get my apartment. I live in Paris, it's my first dog, and I'd like a big dog, that doesnt need too much space nor too much training. My first idea was a Shiba, but I heard they are very hard to train. Is a Great Dane a good dog for me? or can you suggest me any breed?
Anonymous - 10/2/2011 3:39:36 PM
Respond to Question
Although a Dane could live in an apartment, it is a lot of dog for a first time dog owner. You might want to consider an adult Dane, one that has calmed down a bit and has already teethed on something other than your books, couch, shoes, mine even chewed the walls. Or perhaps a Boston Terrier, they are a small dog but they have a large dog personality.

Great Dane would be a good dog they are very loyal and good with kids and aren't very hard to train

QUESTION: my 12 week old dane has a big belly is this weird or normal?
Anonymous - 8/16/2011 9:15:15 PM
Respond to Question
12 week old puppy will not be pregnant. All puppies will have somewhat of a rounded belly. Is the puppy eating normally? playful? If so than what your seeing is probably normal. If the puppy seems to be suffering some discomfort and the stomach is getting obviously large than you definitly should take him/her to the vet. A bloated stomach can sometimes be an indication that your puppy has worms.
Anonymous - 9/6/2011 4:06:46 PM
is your great dane male or female? if it is female it could possibly be pregnant but sometimes a dog can have bloats and that isnt good for a dog at all. so i would suggest just taking your dog in for a vet visit

QUESTION: I'm getting a dog soon, and I really like the Great Dane breed. Would this be a bad breed considering the fact that this would be my first dog? Thanks!
Anonymous - 7/24/2011 5:20:40 PM
Respond to Question
Great Danes are wonderful dogs and are not any more difficult to train than any other breed. What you do need to consider is that a Great Dane puppy like any other will be playful, energetic, clumsy, will teeth, etc. but on a larger scale. As a first time dog owner you may expect more from your puppy due to it's size. A 6 month old Great Dane that looks like an adult will still act like a puppy because it is. This is the time when inexperienced dog owners may give up on the dog, because they think it's misbehaving when in actuality it is behaving like any other puppy. Obedience school is always helpful.
Anonymous - 9/6/2011 4:18:36 PM
I would say no on a great dane and go for a dog like a retriever or something simple to take care of and thats easy to train.

QUESTION: My Great Dane (age 9 months) Male is suffering from some skin problems. He has small non-sticky, dry eruptions on shoulder, back and hind legs. Are those because of some deficiency or improper diet? Please advise.
Anonymous - 7/14/2011 7:35:57 AM
Respond to Question
My first Dane skin was fine, but my latest has acne which my vet told me Danes are prone to, particularly in their "adolescent" years. We use a special shampoo from the vet which flushes out their follicles and in a pinch I will use my toddler's shampoo (California Baby brand).
Anonymous - 1/17/2012 6:33:59 PM
YESSSSSS. That is very bad. And I'm sure your dog isn't "Pathetic." Anyways. That is VERY bad for their skin. Washing your dog that often is more than likely doing more harm than good. Start off by washing your great dane with moisturizing DOG shampoo every couple of weeks. When your dogs skin is healing then start washing it every week. If this doesnt work then take it to the vet. Danes are very sesitive. Hope this helps.

QUESTION: what were great danes bred for what was their work
Anonymous - 7/11/2011 9:49:06 PM
Respond to Question
Historians claim that there are drawings of dogs that resemble the Great Dane on Egyptian monuments from roughly 3000 B.C. The earliest written description of a dog resembling the breed can be found in Chinese literature of 1121 B.C. The origins of the Great Dane as we know it today can be traced to the Irish Wolfhound with mixture of old English Mastiff. The breed was originally developed by the Germans to hunt boar, a ferocious animal. When no longer used for hunting, the breed changed to one of a companion and estate guard dog.

I have a male great dane (3yrs old), he has been wonderful with both of my kids (age 8 & 7). We taught both the kids very young not to torment the dogs. My kids lay all over him play with his tail, touch his feet and ears and it just doesn't phase him. I will agree though that when the kids are out in the yard playing he is very protective of them when someone comes into the yard, which we do have fenced in. I hope this helps.
Anonymous - 8/5/2011 1:05:03 PM
yes but watch them because they may try to hump on them.
Anonymous - 7/7/2011 6:30:38 PM
My folks have a female dane that's been around my boy since he was an infant. There has never been a problem except when she's accidentally stepped on his toes. :) He was taught to never hit or pull on the dogs, so there are no issues. I can't speak for a male dane, but they are typically more protective than aggressive.

QUESTION: How much do Great Danes shed? I love everything else about the breed that I'm reading, but to be in the house, I had always seen myself with as little shedding as possible.
Anonymous - 6/22/2011 1:29:06 PM
Respond to Question
Great Dane's don't shed a lot per say, but they are large dogs with a lot of real estate so you will find a lot of hair around the house. I had less of an issue with dog hair when we owned a Samoyed. I agree that bathing helps.
Anonymous - 1/17/2012 6:37:45 PM
If you brush Great Danes and bathe the reguarly they will not shed much in the house. They are going to shed as much as any other short hair dog they are just bigger.
buyakcpuppies - 6/26/2011 2:51:05 PM
Hi, Normal, with right grooming (baths) and brushing afterwards it's even minimal. My Great Dane sheds mainly when he needs a bath. Good Luck! You won't regret it.

you may want to try crating your great dane when you can't watch her so she won't go in the house.
buyakcpuppies - 6/26/2011 2:51:58 PM
It is quite possible. I have 2 great danes myself and my younger one learned where to do her business very quick by watching our older dane.

Anonymous - 6/21/2011 7:41:45 AM
Respond to Question
we have a 3 yr old male dane and chose not to get his ears clipped. it took some time to grow into the ears :) but he looks too cute and it does cut down on infections and biting bugs as the inner ears are not exposed.
Anonymous - 8/5/2011 1:07:27 PM
Yes, great danes do! It really just depends on how old the dog is to determine if they can get them done or not!
bluestarredanes - 6/26/2011 10:34:50 PM
Great Danes ears can be clipped, but it's not mandatory anymore even for competition dogs. We decided against it since they protect the inner canal from infections and dirt. Plus he looks soooooo cute!

QUESTION: I have a great dane male, age 8 months. What is the ideal diet plan for him?
Anonymous - 6/11/2011 6:26:03 AM
Respond to Question
My vet recommended Innova for large breeds after our 6 month well puppy visit. We do not do canned but he does get the occassional strawberry, blueberries, various vegetables. He gets 2 cups in the morning and 2 at night. Be careful with over feeding due to the hips. Our great dane reached full maturaty by 3 yrs old and is quite happy with the amount of food he is getting and never begs for treats. Good luck
Anonymous - 8/5/2011 1:10:57 PM
Do not fee your Dane puppy food! It has more protein in it than regular dog food so it will make them grow faster than they need to and can cause hip dysplasia which can kill them. Also by the time they are a year old they will be eating up to 10 cups of food a day. Don't give it to them all at one time. Split it up between morning and night. Five in the morning, and Five in the evening. If they eat to much at one time the can get bloat, which means their stomach will flip and cause death if not tended to right away. Hope this helps. :)
Anonymous - 7/10/2011 12:41:41 AM
We used Iams large breed puppy until our great dane girl was 2 years then iams large breed adult and she is doing great.
buyakcpuppies - 6/26/2011 2:53:00 PM
I would say to feed your great dane two large filled bowls and toppings. The toppings are to make him live longer. My dogs have crushed hamburger and green beans that are boiled with juice such as the grease from boiling. To refill the juice when not out of food, just put water- warm or cold.

QUESTION: hi everyone. i want to buy a great dane badly. but can i keep him alone at home once a while? will keeping him alone occasionally for a few hours cause seperation anxiety?
Anonymous - 6/3/2011 11:37:39 AM
Respond to Question
It really depends on training and the dog. I have had Great Danes all my life. All but one was fine when left alone. The other one was fine too but when you came home she would be laying in the yard waiting for you. She like to rip out the screen in the window and jump out.
Anonymous - 10/19/2011 9:00:43 AM
I have a 3yr old male dane and woudl highly recommend crate training, despite leaving toys out and having another dog in the home he was still destructive leaving him out. If you crate train I would recommend toys and getting ride of the plastic pan after potty training for a piece of rug that fits the kennel much better for their legs and back. I have tried dogs beds only to come to a kennel fully of stuffing, the rug has held up much better.
Anonymous - 8/5/2011 1:13:27 PM
I recomened having some chew toys because if leave great dane's alone for a long time without something to chew on they will chew on something that looks okay for them to chew on. And you should put out some food and water just in case it gets hot or hungry.
Anonymous - 6/24/2011 4:11:03 PM
I would recommend kennel training your great dane. I have two danes who I put into a kennel for those days when its either too cold or hot outside and I need to leave the house for a few hours. I would recommend offering for your dane to potty before leaving them in the kennel and making sure they have already eaten and had water. My danes find the kennel comforting and usually just sleep the whole time they are inside.

QUESTION: How to train a shy, abused young Great Dane pup 6 months of age
breezy808 - 6/2/2011 12:23:17 AM
Respond to Question
Im happy to hear your up for the challenge. With abused and shy animals the best thing to do is use positive reinforcement rather than scolding. Such as finding a favorite toy, or using a treat to reward your dog for giving the proper response to a command. Another key is patience. After a few sessions you should see results. I find with my male great dane whom ive owned since he was a pup responds well to a positive tone of voice and generally cowers if I yell at him eventhough hes never been abused. Respond to Question
I got my first Great Dane about a year ago and she has been a wonderful dog, but I am NOT a first time dog owner and honestly, you might want to consider a different breed for the following reasons: You have to be very confident to be in control of a breed like this. First, yes, they're sweet, but they're very BIG and some can be slightly dominant; nor are they the most easily trainable dogs in the world. Second, they are an extremely EXPENSIVE dog to own. They can have several medical problems and vet care can be exhorbitant for a dog this size. (Example: my friend's Dane tore a tendon in her leg--she's a very young dog and it was just during a normal play session. The repair surgery was $3,400.) And that doesn't even consider what it costs to feed them!
If, however, you feel like you're up for these challenges, then go for it and good luck! It's a good sign that you're taking this decision seriously. Continue to do your homework and I'm sure you'll make a great new dog owner.

i would say to get a smaller, less need of exercise dog first. a medium sized dog, like the size of a pit bull would work. just so you can get the hang of having a dog.

European or American? My first dog I ever owned was a European and he was a tough one to train. very stubborn and always wanted to do what he wanted. hard to crate train but thats because I wasnt strong enough to hear him cry all night. he was great with listening to me once he got the hang of things but my hardest part of trainging him was the crate training and potty training. I am not sure if americans are significantly different or not. The only difference that I do know is that Americans will usually only get to be about 150. Europeans are about 180 to 210. and 180 is small for a European. I also had my dog in an apartment and he was great with it. But I was also very active with him. Ran every day and basically where ever I went that I could bring him I did so he got used to people other dogs and car rides VERY fast. I think if you've got the time and are patient enough a great dane would be a great choice if you want one.

Basically they're roommates that don't pay rent. Best dog breed I've ever owned. Easily trainable if you can spend a little time with them. Make sure to read up about diet and exercise for the great dane.

NO. NO. NO.
They are awesome dogs. But for a first timer I would recommend a dog that cannot out run you or stand on their hinds and be taller than you. Regardless of the amount of training, you're still a first timer.

hey, you must know some things about Great Danes they can not be left outside under 40 degrees, they need losts of space to play, they need a lot of exercise to mantain their thin frame, over feeding will shorten the life of your dog also they need to be feed large breed puppy food while still growing and then continue with large breed adult at adulthood. They are large and require a responsible owner

Yes, great danes are wonderful pets. Just check out the lineage to make sure they are not bred too closely. Good luck and enjoy!
