Overview

The Golden Retriever was developed in Britain during the 1800's. The man responsible for this illustrious breed, Lord Tweedmouth, wanted a dog that was loyal, kind, spirited, and energetic. He also wanted a dog with a love for water and the ability to retrieve. Golden Retrievers are the embodiment of beauty and brains.

Character

The Golden Retriever is a gorgeous, large, and energetic breed. They are the world's foremost family pet and companion. They are sturdy, well proportioned, and are well known for their hunting capabilities on land and in the water. The Golden is perceptive and agile.

Temperament

Golden Retrievers are loveable, polite, and highly intelligent. They exude charm and confidence. They are sweet, eager to please, and devoted family companions. They do not do well if left alone for extended periods of time or they will become mischievous and destructive. They have a tendency to be overly exuberant and distractible. They are always gentle and patient with children. They are friendly with other pets. In fact, they are friendly with everyone. They tend to bark as a form of greeting. The Golden Retriever is not well suited for a two career family as they require an inordinate amount of human interaction and companionship.

Care

The Golden Retriever requires daily and thorough brushing with a firm bristle brush. They should be dry shampooed regularly, and bathed only when absolutely necessary with a mild shampoo. They are prone to hip dysplasia, cataracts, and skin allergies. It is important to not over feed the Golden Retriever, as they have a tendency to gain weight.

Coat

The Golden Retriever has a double coat that is water repellent and weather resistant. The outer coat is firm, resilient, and can be wavy or straight. The tail and legs are feathered with longer hair. The under coat is dense and soft in texture. The coat color is rich, lustrous, and varies in shades of cream to gold. The Golden is a heavy shedder.

Training

The Golden Retriever is one of the easiest breeds to train. They excel in obedience and are popular therapy and service dogs. They have many talents including competitive obedience, narcotic detection, agility, and performing tricks.

Activity

The Golden Retriever requires daily exercise. They enjoy play sessions with their family, retrieving balls and other toys. They will do okay in an apartment dwelling provided they are sufficiently exercised. Golden Retrievers are moderately active indoors and does best with a medium to large sized securely fenced yard.

QUESTION: How many years do Goldens live?

juneka - 1/16/2012 12:34:30 PM

Respond to Question

We have had four golden retrievers. Two lived until 10, one until 8. All three died of some form of cancer.

Anonymous - 1/31/2012 4:03:02 PM

It would depend on a lot of factors, as a rule I would say 8-10 years on average. There is a lot of unhealthy dogs out there being bred because goldens are popular and easy to sell and cute puppies. But early cancer and cancer in general is common in the breed, dogs getting cancer at 2 is not unheard of. Heart can be an issue in some lines if untested, dogs at 3-4 years of age just drop dead from heart failure. Hip and elbow problems are common as well. Be sure to ask your breeder before you get a puppy if they've had these things tested for and ask for the certificates for proof - shots up to date doesn't count.

Anonymous - 1/31/2012 12:46:23 PM

it all depends - my golden lived for 2 years! he got cancer

QUESTION: After the golden retriever giving birth, how long will it take for her to heat again or conceive?

Anonymous - 1/4/2012 4:02:43 AM

Respond to Question

It does take about a month or so to go back into heat but if you over breed your Golden Retriever then her & the puppies wont be very healthy....definitely do some research about the breeding of Goldens before you breed her so you can be fully prepared for her sake & your own, puppies are a lot of care especially a bunch at one time!!

lilkait41114 - 1/31/2012 1:06:42 PM

Usually 6-9 months after the litter is born, depends on the dog and her condition, but most responsible breeders don't breed more than once a year or more than 3 times. If you don't know the answer to that kind of question, chances are you should spay your Golden Retriever.

Anonymous - 1/31/2012 12:40:49 PM

Probably about another month or so. But don't breed your Golden over and over again because that is really sad. :((((

Don't run with your golden until he is around a year old. his hips and joints are still growing and can cause hip dysplasia and arthritis.

QUESTION: I am considering breeding my golden for a third time. She has had two previous litters of nine pups each time all healthy. The litters were a year apart. She is almost 4 years old. Any thoughts on the number of litters a responsible dog owner should allow?

Anonymous - 12/11/2011 10:17:26 PM

Respond to Question

A responsible dog owner wouldn't have to ask. If you have not had your Golden Retriever checked for hip and elbow problems, heart issues and eye problems by a specialist, and don't know their background as far as early cancer, PU or any of the other issues in the breed, you should find that information out first, then decide if you should breed her or not.

Anonymous - 1/31/2012 12:39:34 PM

I would say 3 litters because golden retrievers can sometimes be hard to handle and the will all have to go on walks and that might be tiring.

It is probably more natural for it to happen in the yard, but make sure your golden retriever is in a place where you can help her if she needs help, like the garage.

QUESTION: I have a 4 month golden how much should he weigh and how tall should he be?

Anonymous - 11/5/2011 1:48:44 PM

Respond to Question

It would depend on the parents and how your Golden Retriever puppy is weight wise. More important than a number is to make sure they aren't too fat or too thin, so they are less likely to have joint issues. Hip and elbow disease are very common in the breed, so be sure to watch his waistline and not do too much exercise with him - no jogging, biking or other extreme workouts till he's 2.

Anonymous - 1/31/2012 12:37:37 PM

Spay and neuter your dogs. Not only does it help with an unwanted liter it also makes them more calm and easygoing.

I would get your female golden retriever spayed and your male golden retriever neutered

Anonymous - 1/10/2012 3:01:40 PM

Goldens are one of the best dogs you can have. They are true family dogs and get along great with anyone. They are patient with children and other dogs. My friend has a golden retriever and she (the dog) helped train my yorkie and kinda acts like his mother. Its so cute :)

QUESTION: Should I get a golden retriever for my 9 year kid?

Anonymous - 10/13/2011 6:23:41 PM

Respond to Question

Yes! We love our Golden! She has been a great dog full of personality and she loves kids!

Anonymous - 1/5/2012 5:35:24 PM

We got our golden puppy earlier this year when our son was 9. They bonded extremely well. But i have to take care of the dog most of the time, since the dog is now much heavier and stronger. Overall, I am very pleased to have the dog, he is such a great joy and companion not only to my son, but to all of us (me especially). However, it does take a lot of time to care for a golden.

Anonymous - 12/27/2011 4:48:11 PM

If your daughter has time to care for the golden retriever, then yes.

Anonymous - 12/21/2011 1:23:08 AM

goldens are not that easy to care for, you have to groom them alot and walk them at least 2 times a day but if your kid is responseable... GO FOR IT!!!

Anonymous - 10/9/2011 11:46:42 AM

Respond to Question

Don't. There's too many unwanted mixed breed dogs needing homes to justify breeding more. If you must, get your dog's health clearances all completed first, hips, elbows, eyes and heart, and make sure the poodle's owner does the same.

QUESTION: My Golden Retriever eats napkıns and sometımes eats his poo!! What should I do ??? He drinks alot of water so he pees all the tıme all over the home and poops all over. What should I do ???

Anonymous - 10/8/2011 4:51:24 PM

Respond to Question

Give your Golden Retriever pineapples which will make the poo taste disgusting to him. Also if he goes potty inside the house crate him, and make sure he does not see you pick up the poo. Take him outside a lot and keep him on the leash to make sure that he goes. It is also a good idea to keep him on the leash at home and attach the leash to yourself so you can monitor him.

Anonymous - 11/29/2011 2:02:49 PM

You can get a zap collar and control, it sends your Golden Retriever a vibration as a warning and then it beeps and can give a correction. If your dog is a puppy try stopping feeding it 3 times a day. If that doent work try talking to your dogs vet.

Anonymous - 11/27/2011 5:35:50 PM

You need to start crate training your golden retriever. Look online as how to start this at once. Never clean up the poop in front of your dog. He sees you clean it up, and so he will do the same in the form of eating it. The mother dog eats her puppies poop to keep the area clean. Also talk to your vet . There are medications to help stop the eating poop problem. You need to confine doggie to a small area if you cant watch every move he makes. Use pee pee and poop pads or newspaper to get him to go in one area of the house. Then gradually move the paper closer to the door then eventually outside. Confine to crate when you cant watch him. Take away water at 730 at night. Put in crate to sleep. Most dogs wont soil their crate. Take to pee pee pads as soon as you take him out of the crate. Praise him for using the pads. Hope this helps

QUESTION: What age should a Golden Retriever be before you mate them with another dog of their breed?

Anonymous - 9/28/2011 4:41:44 PM

Respond to Question

Golden Retriever's should be at least 2 years of age and have their hips and elbows cleared, as well as their heart and eyes. This is to ensure they don't produce puppies with health problems; there are a lot of issues with the breed so it's important to have the testing done. You can look up more information on a golden retriever club website.

Anonymous - 1/31/2012 12:33:01 PM

Golden Retriever's should not have two litters a year. More like that a whole lifetime. Be a responsible breeder.

Anonymous - 1/11/2012 10:25:56 PM

Golden Retriever females are mature and ready to breed at about 2 or 2 1/2 years of age. They should only have 2 litters a year. Males are mature at 1 to 1 1/2 years of age. Please remember that only great quality dogs should be bred. There are a lot of good dogs living in shelters that need a home.

I understand that a small number of golden retrievers can have a bit of black as a throwback genetically and there can be a white patch on the chest, but black and brown, sounds like your female was fooling around...

QUESTION: how much should a 10 month old golden eat per day

Anonymous - 9/4/2011 9:36:25 PM

Respond to Question

A high quality dog food has something called an AFFCO statement on it. Within the statement it should say lab testing was done, and it should be for a the specific life stage of your animal (Not all life stages). If the statement meets both of these requirements, then it is a quality food to feed your pet. If you follow the feeding instructions on the label you will be fine. :)

Anonymous - 1/21/2012 4:56:51 PM

A Golden Retriever should eat 2 cups per day, 3 times a day, morning noon and night.

Anonymous - 11/27/2011 5:43:56 PM

Check the label on the dog food package. Always choose a high-quality food, and it's best to continue using the same food brand for your dog's life. Usually about 2 cups or so (depending on type of food)

QUESTION: What is shedding or shed I dont know? I am planning on getting a golden retriever and I dont know what is shedding that every body is talking about

Anonymous - 8/28/2011 10:20:48 AM

Respond to Question

It means when you pet the dog the fur will come off of him and on to your hand. Also, when your golden retriever lays or sits somewhere the fur will come off on what he was laying or sitting on.

Anonymous - 1/10/2012 3:02:59 PM

Shedding is when a dog's hair comes out. It's completely normal and natural for many breeds of dogs. It is how they get rid of dead hair, or when it's hot outside, they shed to stay cooler. Golden Retrievers shed A LOT! Especially at the change of seasons. My six-year old Golden sheds a lot.

Anonymous - 10/17/2011 7:05:22 PM

Shedding is when a dogs hair comes out. (not all of it, but little bits) an example would be when you brush your hair with a hairbrush. some of you hair comes out. That's what shedding is for a dog. the excess hair comes out of the coat. And there are some times of the year that they shed more. When they lose their summer coat they shed heavily.

QUESTION: If planning to breed Golden Retriever's, which is better to get first, male or female?

Anonymous - 8/26/2011 10:34:56 AM

Respond to Question

You should get a female Golden Retriever first. The male will think he is alpha dog and not welcome her

Anonymous - 11/27/2011 5:50:02 PM

Do not get a dominant male dog as your first dog because they are often hard to control as they think they're the "alpha dog". A calm female is a good choice for a first pet.

Anonymous - 10/30/2011 5:07:48 PM

It depends on your needs. Male Golden Retriever's tend to be much bigger, and can be more territorial. I would personally recommend a female as your first dog, but you should decide based on your personal circumstances.
