I hava a Toy poodle and a German Shepherd, as well as a cat. They get along great. A gradual introduction helps.

well, for one thing, it depends sometimes on how well socialized it is. it's not the breed itself that's bad with other dogs, it's the individual.

QUESTION: Is the German Shepherd good with cats..... Because i have 2 and one of them is shy so would this be a good dog?
Anonymous - 4/16/2012 3:59:28 PM
Respond to Question
We have two cats that have been with us for 4 years, last year we got a german shepherd puppy, we slowly introduced him to our cats, we made sure we had him on a lead each time so that the cats could come to him and check him out and slowly progressed to letting him off the lead to interact with them but did stop him from chasing them (which he loves to do). The cats took to him after the first month, at the beginning they were not sure what to make of him but slowly came around (our female is also very shy and only let my husband or myself pet her and now her dog as well). He absolutely loves them and goes to them when he wants to nap, have a cuddle or play. So we have had a great experience with our cats and german shepherd.

Change your dog's diet. We had the same problem with several of our dogs. We now feed them raw food. Chicken and or fish. We also make a stew with brown rice, sweet potato, kale and some boneless chicken for flavor. Belive it or not it is much cheaper than processed dry food. The dogs can eat the chicken bones and all if it is UNCOOKED. Do not feed your dogs cooked chicken of fish if it is still on the bone. There is plenty of good information online about a raw food diet. We have four dogs and they are all happy and healthy eating like this and our vet bills have declined substantially.
Anonymous - 4/26/2012 11:18:18 AM
Your dog may be allergic to something else like corn. Corn is the main ingredient in most dog foods. I have an English mastiff and German shepherd. The mastiff devolved sores and the vet told us that it was her shampoo and sold us this very expensive shampoo, and it did not work. Another vet said change her food to a non corn based food and she cleared right up.
Anonymous - 4/6/2012 12:39:34 PM
I had the same issues, you need to try Zymox shampoo and conditioner. You can find it by searching on the internet and it is not too terribly expensive. I discovered this after spending hundreds of dollars in vet bills with skin allergies. They also have ear drops if yours have issues with the ears. Hope this works for you.

Hi there, we got our GSD as a rescue puppy and he had a very bad ear infection when we got him, we got this treated and his ears slowly started to get better until we had one up and one down, after about another month both his ears were standing up ... he was about 7 or 8 months at this time. Maybe check his ears or give it some more time. We asked our vet and went along with the advice they provided and it took a few months but it all worked out great. We have a really happy healthy boy now!
Anonymous - 4/23/2012 9:45:02 AM
Your puppy probably is pure breed. Some puuppies ears don't stand up on their own, and unfortunately you would need to make a decision to have the vet intervene and stand them up. I think it is a surgical process, but it is a costly fee...or you can just love your pet the way it is and just make fun on him/her..lol! My dog wasn't full breed but had that issue and he was hilarious. Always put a smile on my face!!
Good luck!

I had an Akita that had the same condition. I was told by a Vet the roll up some gauze the long way and cut it to size of the ear then tape the dogs ear around it. It worked. It strengthened the lazy ear. I don't recall how long it took, but I don't remember it taking that long. Good luck.

After your german shepherd quits bleeding completely, you have a 2-week window in which to have her bred by the male. Then puppies will arrive 56 - 58 days later.

QUESTION: i have a 15 week old german shepherd mixed with a wolf and a st bernard.how do u get them 2 quit biting?
Anonymous - 3/2/2012 11:18:28 AM
Respond to Question
Hi there, I think its perfectly normal for your 15 week old german shepherd puppy to do this, ours did as well, a dog doesnt have hands and learns through its mouth, you just have to teach it that biting or nibbling you is not acceptable. We taught our dog the command "off" so whenever he went to nibble our feet or hands or an object etc that he was not allowed to we used the word "off"; we also let him know that it was perfectly ok for him to use his mouth on his toys to play with them and not our hands. Also around this 15 week age he was teething so we got him lots of teething toys, he stopped this mouthing/biting behaviour soon after he finished teething. I hope this helps.
Anonymous - 4/23/2012 9:54:43 AM
Ignore the previous poster. There are many ways to teach a dog not to bite, and giving the dog up for adoption should be the absolute last resort.
My GSD used to bite everybody except me, but she finally learned not to, and now never bites anyone.
There are a lot of methods such as squirting lemon juice into her mouth when she goes for you, sticking a finger down her throat to make her gag slightly (sounds kind of mean, but it works fast and you only have to do it once or twice) holding her muzzle closed while your other hand is on her scruff, and making a loud noise when she bites.
Those are just a few off the top of my head. Do a little google research, you'll come up with a lot of good methods and tutorials on how to properly do them.
Anonymous - 3/20/2012 1:50:56 PM
One nickname for German Shepherd's is "land sharks". They don't stop biting until over a year old. I'm assuming you are talking about objects like shoes, carpet, etc. If you are talking about people, then he has not been properly socialized and you should probably consider giving him up for adoption and educating yourself on the proper way to raise a puppy.

Respond to Question
walk the dogs together. get a friend to help you out by walking one of the dogs. walk the adult dogs on the left of your body, and the puppy on the right. after a good 15 min of walking them apart you should be able to move them together so they are all beside each other, i suggest getting a training collar of some sort for this and keep it high up on the neck behind the ears. The dogs should walk fine beside the pup after a good 15-30 min walk near each other. if the dogs go at the pup while walking you need to correct them with a quick sharp tug on the leash. You may need to walk them like this together daily for a while, but i think it's your best option.

QUESTION: I have a 2 yr old German Shepherd that was a rescue. The kennel I got him from said he was timid at first but would warm up in time. They also said he was house and crate trained. I have had the dog for about 4 months now and he has had numerous accidents in the house. He also remains in his crate all day unless I let him outside or take him for walk. He is not a pet and my little girls adore him but I am losing patience considering his accidents are of the diarhea type. Not sure why...his food has been the same and after four months I can't imagine it being nerves. I have to crate him much more than I want to because I am afraid of the mess I will find when I come home. His latest was a 3 hour fix due to it being diarhea. He is also afraid of everything. his timidness has not subsided. I have never seen or heard of anything like this with this bred.I think the kennel pulled the wool over my eyes on this one. .Thoughts?
Anonymous - 2/27/2012 5:08:29 PM
Respond to Question
What do you mean your rescue German Shepherd is NOT a pet? Why did you get him if not to be a pet? I hope things are better. A rescue requires much more patience, love, and training as you don't know what he went through. Please don't give up. These dogs suffer much because people get them without understanding the true meaning of "furever". The potty accidents could be food related, health related etc. Have you been to a good vet? He could have worms, parasites, Giardia, etc. Please have him chekced for EPI and consider a grain free good. I am not sure why you have not heard of issues with shepherds who are rescues as they often have issues with new people, etc. They have been through hell on earth. If you are on Facebook check out German Shepherd Tips. Also Leerburg has great articles. Google your issues and you will find a wealth of information. Good luck and praying for your pup.
Anonymous - 5/15/2012 11:16:37 PM
Our purebred German Shepherd had a similar problem of intermittent diarrhea, minimal weight loss but her coat became a bit thin. She was seen at the vet clinic repeatedly. Finally she had something which appeared to be seizure. It took an old farmer vet to see that she had a hypothyroidism, probably from birth. This well seasoned doc probably saved my dog's life, by noticing a notch in the tail fur. So, please check out her tail, and get a blood test.
Good luck!
PS Just like in humans, thyroid problems are easily managed with medication.
Anonymous - 4/8/2012 1:47:35 PM
The diarhea sounds like it could be food related so i suggest switching your German Shepherd's food for sure. My pup has a bladder condition that made her urinate all over the house when she was younger, so i definitely know what it feels like. After several vet trips, a special food, special treats, and limited water, my dog is pretty well accident free (she's only 7 months, so there is the odd time) I suggest getting your dogs stool and urine tested. However, right away my vet would tell you that if the stools are not formed or the dog is gassy than it needs a new food.
Anonymous - 3/14/2012 9:04:29 AM
You may have several issues on your hands, GSD's are typically fantastic family dogs, remember, you're dealing with a rescue. GSD's need socialization, activity and mental stimulation, they are very intelligent and want to work, without it they can become troublesome. Your dog may not have been socialized properly, this takes time to overcome, but with proper attention and daily work it can be. Regarding the stools, the problem could be food related, parasites or a medical problem, have you dog vet checked. My dog had loose stools for a time, she was tested for a pancreatic deficiency, but we found it was more a food allergy, her stools became more normal once we got her off lamb based food. Do some reading about the breed, if you find you can meet the needs of the GSD and put up with the dog hair, you'll find they are a fantastic family member.
Anonymous - 3/4/2012 9:36:36 AM
Discuss the problem with the rescue, take your German Shepherd to the vet, maybe a microrganism is causing the diarrhea and he needs medication. He could have an allergy to his food--also can cause diarrhea. He has no chance of getting over his timidness if left in a crate all day. He needs to be with you at all times wherever you are in the house. Give him a chance to let you know when he has to go potty. If kept in a crate you will not learn to read his signals. German Shepherds are extremely intelligent, you both will learn quickly. Give him prase and lots of it when he does his potty outside.

QUESTION: How can you tell if your German shepherd is going to be big and tall ??
Anonymous - 2/19/2012 1:33:24 PM
Respond to Question
Big and tall are not breed standard. The best way to tell if your "German Shepherd" is going to be big and tall is to first see if he has health problems, comes from a backyard breeder that only talks about the size of his dogs, etc. If the answer to these questions is yes, then you have a "big and tall" German Shepherd.
