QUESTION: Are there long haired bordeaux's?

Respond to Question
by standard the dogue should have a short fine coat. longer hair is a minor fault. long or fluffy hair would be a disqualifying fault.

QUESTION: What's the life span on a Dogue?
Anonymous - 5/28/2011 3:05:38 PM
Respond to Question
8-10 years is the lifespan of the Dogue De Bordeaux. Anything less would be early demise.
hotdiggity - 7/20/2011 9:31:40 AM
About 5 - 8 years unfortunately. It is very short but Dogue's give you a lifetime worth of love in the meantime.

QUESTION: Can you train a Dogue De Bordeaux to get along with same sex dogs? I really want one, but my parents prefer male dogs. We already have another male dog. What could we do?
Anonymous - 5/5/2011 7:22:58 AM
Respond to Question
The Bordeaux tends to be dominant. As long as the other dog of the same sex is willing to be a beta dog, there shouldn't be any problems. The dogue gets along very well with dogs or other animals it is raised with, with few exceptions .
hotdiggity - 7/20/2011 9:36:08 AM
I would be very careful about two males together I would make sure that one of them is fixed or they might end up in a fight, I have seen many fights with males together and in Europe yrs ago they warned NOT TO KEEP two males together, because if there is a fight you might get hurt trying to break them up !!
rembrante - 6/1/2011 4:11:12 PM
Don't ever be afraid to puchase two dogs of the same sex, especially Dogue De Bordeaux. They are very compatible dogs and love dogs of any sex.

QUESTION: How protective is this breed? I have owned Rottweilers that were very protective and would thrash you if you entered our property, and owned Olde Bulldogges that were Barkers, but wouldn't stop someone from entering the yard. How would a Dogue deal with this situation? Or would it depend on how much socializing you have done? Or would it matter?
Thanks in advance.
Anonymous - 4/5/2011 11:04:37 AM
Respond to Question
The Bordeaux is intelligent. It is protective but not overly the way a Rottweiller tends to be. it is leary of strangers but does love people and human interaction. of course it will be what you train it to be. protective training is highly discouraged. Their natural instincts are more than enough for most households and situations.

My Dogue is very protective of my house and three kids, he guards my children an the house like its his job.

QUESTION: How well do Dogue De Bordeaux's adapt to colder temps like in the dakotas?
Anonymous - 2/15/2011 11:11:26 PM
Respond to Question
The dogue can be kept outdoors even in the Dakotas as long as shelter and fresh water is provided. This may be difficut in below freezing temperatures but is necessary.
hotdiggity - 7/20/2011 9:44:32 AM
The Dogue would do fine in the colder climates as long as its not living out there. I wouldn't leave a Dogue out in the cold, however living in the house and going out to play in these climates would be fine. As you may already know, short coat dogs are not meant to "live" in outdoor cold climates.

QUESTION: My Dogue De Bordeaux weighs 200 pounds and looks like a english mastiff but hes not why is he like that??
Anonymous - 12/13/2010 11:14:16 AM
Respond to Question
I find it hard to believe that your dogue weighs 200 lbs. even though i have produced one this size myself. The original standard did call for a dogue of this size but that hasn't been the standard for 100 years. it is possible that you have a dogue with recessive traits. it is also possible that your dogue is not pure. send me a photo and i'll give you my opinion as to whether this is a recessive trait or possibly the result of a cross breeding, keeping in mind that without DNA you could never be too sure. dogue@prodigy.net

For some reason, no profile for large and massive dogs I've run across has ever been close to correct. A friend of mine once owned a 300 lb English mastiff the size of a small pony. That a Dogue de Bordeaux would reach such a size doesn't surprise me at all.

QUESTION: How much does an 8 week old Dogue De Bordeaux usually weigh?
Anonymous - 12/6/2010 10:53:41 PM

My 7 week Bordeau, female is 15 lbs. The breader says that is perfect for her age. To think she will be more than a hundred pounds in ten months kinda scares me, but cute as a button...lol

QUESTION: Whats the best food to give a Dogue De Bordeaux and to maximize the size.
Anonymous - 11/30/2010 1:09:35 PM
Respond to Question
dogues are individuals. some can thrive on sawdust, yet others given the best diet possible will fall apart. Solid Gold makes some of the best dog food in the world but is very expensive and it is always possible that dog food companies change the makeup of their food after it has become established and popular.
hotdiggity - 7/20/2011 9:54:31 AM
Look for a dog food without Soy/Wheat/Corn products.. Blue Buffalo, Nurto Ultra, Presice are great.

QUESTION: Does the dogue de bordeaux have a lot of health issues?
Anonymous - 10/20/2010 5:42:14 PM
Respond to Question
The dogue de Bordeaux shouldn't have a lot of health issues today. But they are susceptible to any of the maladies associated with large breed dogues, like hip dysplasia , cardio myopathy etc. etc. The gene pool today is sufficiently large enough to avoid most health issues. Unfortunately, breeders with the ethics, knowledge and resources to take advantage of such a large gene pool are not as readily available.
hotdiggity - 7/20/2011 9:59:31 AM
Mange can be an issue for the first 2 years of the dogue de bordeaux life. The breed is one of many who are susceptible and more prone to developing mange. It is treatable and early intrevention can make it an non issue, although it will cost you to fix. So chose your pup well and go thru a good breeder who's responsible and up front about their dogs.

What about hip dysplasia, BLOAT and cancer in the dogue de bordeaux? The main cause of death in this breed is cancer!! Buy from a backyard breeder and you have no idea what you are getting!!!! If you buy from a breeder who does not test their breeding pair -you are asking for trouble. THIS is NOT an inexpensive breed to own!!
Anonymous - 11/24/2010 5:10:10 PM
Not anymore than other large breeds, hips, hearts, bloat

ACTUALLY NO THE ONLY ISSUE I EVER HAVE HAD WITH THE DOGUE DE BORDEAUX MORE THAN ONCE ARE EAR INFECTIONS DUE TO THEIR FLOPPY EARS. BUT AS LONG AS YOU KEEP THEIR EARS CLEAN AND DRY THEY SHOULD NOT BECOME A BIG ISSUE.

QUESTION: Can u get long and short nose Dogue De Bordeaux??? someone was saying to me that these aren't a frech breed, which they aren't, are they?
Anonymous - 9/24/2010 10:00:02 AM
Respond to Question
The correct muzzle length for the Dogue De Bordeaux should not be too short or too long. Both are possible but neither should be sought after. Shorter muzzles are sought after because of the look they give to the dogue and its head but you lose strength of jaw when the muzzle is too short. conversely, you lose head type when it is too long.
hotdiggity - 7/20/2011 10:04:01 AM
There are long nose Dogues, they are not show quality and should only be sold without breeding rights, this is a result of puppymills and bad breedings
rembrante - 11/2/2010 6:50:34 AM
DOGUE DE BORDEAUX ARE FRENCH MASTIFF'S DEPENDING ON THEIR DNA AND THE QUALITY OF THE DOG YOU MAY END UP WITH A MASTIFF THAT HAS A LONGER SNOUT BUT GENERALLY THE TRUE DOGUE DE BORDEAUX HAS A SHORT SNOUT/NOSE.
