QUESTION: I have a mini wire hair dachshund. She is 6 months old. She is very sweet. I was wondering a couple of things. How long does it take for her full adult coat to come in? And, I have always been told to strip a wire hair verses clipping a wire hair. However, I had a groomer tell me she clips wire hairs. Best practice?

Respond to Question
If your dachshund puppy cannot hold its potty in the crate, you are leaving it in there too long. Wait until the puppy is closer to 4 months old to start using a crate again. Right now put the puppy in the bathroom, using a baby gate across the door jam to keep puppy in, place newspaper nearest the baby gate. Keep the door open. Place a bed and a food and water dish in the back away from the newspaper. Keep plastic bags, a nontoxic bathroom cleaner, and paper towels near by to be able to roll up newspapers and put in the bag and clean with paper towels. Your puppy when not supervised should stay inside this area. You can leave toys like Kongs stuffed with peanut butter, or Nylabones. When your playing with your puppy Supervise it at all times.

QUESTION: does the mini dachshund breed tend to have any problems?
Anonymous - 1/15/2012 9:06:50 AM
Respond to Question
Yes, mini dachshund's are prone to heart defects like enlarged hearts, PRA or progressive retinal atrophy, spinal defects, blindness or deafness in double dapples. Look for a breeder that Guarantee's Genetic health for a certian period of time. Some things like PRA does not show up until they are about 5 years old. Good luck with your new Mini Dachshund.

My sister has done several C-sections on normal 11-12 lb girls. Having birthing issues is not only dependent on the dog, its dependent on the stress of the owner, inexperience of the owner, and having a dog that is spoiled. Mother's that are super attached to their humans sometimes reject their puppies, or kill them out of jealousy.

QUESTION: My family and I just got a 4 week old dachshund puppy yesterday, and we need to create a schedule for her also train her. But we do not know where to start.
Anonymous - 12/24/2011 8:55:26 AM
Respond to Question
Are you sure your dachshund is 4 weeks old and not 8 weeks old ? The puppy should still be nursing from its mother to gain good immunity, and also get pack structure. If you cannot take it back to where it came from, please keep it around another loving dog, the puppy should be eating several times a day ( about 6 small meals). Use plain uncooked Goats Milk, and soaked dry Puppy food or canned food. Small meals given often will help insure the puppy does not get low blood sugar. If you don't have the time, or work, you will need to arrange a neighbor or babysitter to take care of the puppy when your gone. Be super careful about germs, puppies should not have there first vaccine until 6 weeks old, and are not fully protected until 16 weeks and there 4th vaccine is done. As for potty training, throw that out the window until your baby is also in the teen weeks. For now the puppy must be keep warm, on pee pads with access water and warm blankets all day.

QUESTION: My 13 week mini dachshund has developed a croupy cough not all the time after she eats and when she gets really excited took her to the vets twice said she sounds good and clear in her lungs any ideas what this could be.
Anonymous - 12/20/2011 2:40:36 PM
Respond to Question
Some dogs get a tracheal collapse, it has been linked to using collars and pulling hard on the leash, or having a cold. Some call it a honking noise, as they seem to try to cough up something when they get excited.
If that is what it is, there is no cure, its something you have to watch and rub the front of there neck area to help it relax when it happens.

QUESTION: I have a rescue mini doxie and am not sure she is a real mini. She weighs about 18 pounds and is about 19 inches long. I got her when she was four weeks old, at about 2 pounds, and she is now 16 months old. She is a loving dog and loves to play and run. She has been completely potty trained for about 8 months now. She sleeps in a crate and she also happily stays in her crate when no one is home. She usually just goes there herself when the house is empty!! Her favorite pasttime is sitting on the arm of my chair watching out the window. I love her so much. I was just wondering if a mini gets as big as she is.
Anonymous - 10/27/2011 7:34:37 PM
Respond to Question
Technically minis are under 12 lbs. Your dog would be considered a "tweenie" - this size usually weighs in the teens. Standards can get in the 25 - 35 lb range.

QUESTION: I have a 9 1/2 month old female mini dachshund. I bought her from a breeder at 7 weeks old and 3 lbs. She is now 9 lbs. She is a wonderful dog and companion. She is very well behaved and I live in an apartment and she is trained to ring potty bells on my door when she has to go potty and she goes potty on a potty patch on my back patio. I am thinking about buying a playmate for her. a 7 week old male from the same breeder. I have never had a male mini before so I am concerned. Will a male and female get along? Would she help potty train a male pup? I just do not want to get a male and have it hike its leg and urinate in my apartment. She is crate trained and stays in a crate when I am at work and she sleeps in the crate. Would they be ok to put them both in the same crate or should they have separate crates? Any thoughts?
Anonymous - 10/22/2011 6:56:08 PM
Respond to Question
I have 1 female and 3 male dachshunds ranging in age from 10 months to 16 years old. They all get along fine for the most part. Two of the pups from our first litter have been "crate" dogs from 8 weeks old and cry when they are not together. If your female is already trained she will help with the training of the male and she would probably enjoy the company!

QUESTION: My dachshund is 5 pounds and 5 years old. Is she too small to have puppies? Could it kill her?
Anonymous - 10/12/2011 7:18:31 PM
Respond to Question
Ok- the number of times breeded has no indication of how many puppies your dog will have. Usually ONE breeding will produce the number of puppies that your dog should have. It just needs to be at the right time. I had a 2-yr old that was bred once that had 4 puppies, then when she was 3-yr (bred once) she had 7 puppies. My Dad had a large dog (english setter) that had 11 puppies (of course bred once)!
Anonymous - 11/27/2011 1:46:56 AM
She shouldn't depending on how big her litter is you would have to be there when she has them
1. sterilize a pair of scissors in boiling water.
2. Pop bags with hands remove extra from mouth using pinky finger
3. Cut umbilical cord 2-3 in away from belly button
4. Rub back until they start to breath
5. If any are yellow take to vet with in 2 days
6. If milk is coming out of nose take to vet within
Anonymous - 11/13/2011 10:15:19 AM
Unless you breed her with a dachshund of the same size. I would say it could really endanger her health. Another thought is she in good health a mini should weigh abt. 10 lbs full grown.
Anonymous - 11/11/2011 12:29:40 AM
Hi there! Yes, She sounds too small for puppies. You have to breed them at least 3 to 4 times for 3 puppies. This would be the litter size recommended. As the puppies get numerically smaller they grow bigger inside your girl and will cause birthing problems - Emergency C-section ($1000 +). A vet could AI her at a cost ($75 up) but you would not know how many puppies and would still run the risk of birthing problems in her size and age. In a larger dachshund in great heath you can go longer in age - up to 6 yrs.old. I have been working with, showing, and breeding dachshunds for over 12 years. Hope this helps. Dee

QUESTION: I have my friends 6 month old Dachshund staying and it is VERY timid and scared of humans - it is not eating and pooing itself and will not come out of its cage. what would you suggest to help her settle?
Anonymous - 10/3/2011 3:51:45 PM
Respond to Question
The puppy is stressed. Can you get it out of the cage or coax it out with meat or cheese. Once out, Please hold and love her. She needs to be held to adjust to you and her surroundings. Keep the crate with you and the door open. Try some milk, canned puppy food, water & pedilyte mixed. Dehydration is a worry with not eating and drinking. Separation anxiety is what it sounds like this puppy has. Best wishes. Hope this helps. Dee

Yes, most dachshunds are easy to train and love the attention. Train on a one on one basis and in a quiet area with no distractions and lots of rewards - like little bites of pupperoni pieces. Good luck. Dee

QUESTION: When i give my Dachshund a blanket, pillow etc..to sleep with, he keeps humping it. How can i stop this? He's starting to ruin our throw pillows.

My Dachshund just chews the blanket into small pieces
Anonymous - 12/4/2011 9:50:46 AM
Dog bed, pillow, blanket, it all comes back to the same thing. You've got a chewer on your hands. You may think about getting in contact with a local training class, because when you come down to it, it's a behavior problem. You may try getting your Dachshund some raw hides, in order to give him something appropriate to chew on.
Anonymous - 10/12/2011 10:32:38 PM
Try getting a REAL dog bed so then maybe your dachshund won't chew it up or don't give him a pillow. Try using the basket and put 2 blankets in the basket so it covers each side of the basket

The ONLY place a dachshund should be clipped is their paws and if they have a couple of long hairs on their "pee-pee". They say NEVER to cut any other.

QUESTION: My Dachshund is 1 yr old and is only 5.2 pounds - is she a mini or is their a smaller Dachshund breed?
Anonymous - 7/31/2011 7:03:24 PM

No. There are standards and mini Dachshunds. What has happened is that a breeder is selectively breeding the dogs small. They call them "Teeny Weenies" but it's not an actual breed.

i have two minis and one is way smaller than the other
Anonymous - 8/16/2011 4:12:24 PM
Well mini is the only breed that is recongnized by the AKC but if she is mixed with another small dog, it could be the reason for her being so tiny..I have a 16 week and he is already reaching 9 pounds! So it all varies, but if your worried you should ask your vet

QUESTION: I just picked up my two mini doxies yesterday - they are 10 weeks old. What is the recommendation on how much I should feed them? I've noticed my long hair pup is the "piggy" eats all his, then goes for his brothers (another doxie) then goes after our other dogs food (boxer) but he's the smallest pup.....any suggestions on feeding amounts and schedules would be great with this transition.
Anonymous - 7/31/2011 8:44:06 AM
Respond to Question
The best advice I have is to feed twice a day with 1/3 cup food; I have a 16 week and he seems to be fine with that. Feed in the morning when you wake up, before you go to work/school, and feed again when you are eating dinner to let them know not to beg and to eat their own food. Make sure that they don't overeat! Doxie's are known for not knowing when to stop eating, so watch em :) hope it helps!

QUESTION: My mini Dachshund is a little over 3 months,
she's always gotten along with other dogs (even a great dane!) But about 2 weeks ago, an overweight hyper lab pounced on her - throwing her into a very defensive growl even when I was holding her. I've never seen her act like this.
I am going to be moving in with some friends next week - due to some financial strains. The couple we're moving in with have a bigger dog (we're not completely sure what it's mix is)
Do you think she will be okay now? I'm nervous.
Anonymous - 7/29/2011 1:11:29 PM
Respond to Question
I think that just the fact that your Mini Dachshund was being a little invaded of privacy by the lab made her defensive, but if she has alwaus gotten along well with other dogs, then it should not be a problem..my advice to to try to slowly introduce instead of jumping in head first, schedule some play dates before you move it--or else it can stress your doxie out. Hope this helps!

Since then though, I've noticed her poops to be smaller than before. Normal everything else.
No changes in types of food, or amount or anything.
Shes about 13-14 weeks.

See a vet. There are so many things out there that can change a dog's stool, that the only way to really know what's going on is to see your vet. People can recommend a million things, but they may do nothing, or even make it worse. If something is out of the norm, and you are worried about it, see a vet.

QUESTION: why does my mini dachshund skid his butt on the ground?
Anonymous - 7/27/2011 7:44:06 PM
Respond to Question
It could be anal glands, or it could be intestinal worms. Not all intestinal parasites are visible to the naked eye. See your vet.
Anonymous - 10/12/2011 10:39:31 PM
Your mini dachshund may need his anal glands released,a vet can easily determine this with an examination
Anonymous - 10/1/2011 6:32:37 PM
Your dachshund might have some left over dung on his butt. He is most likely trying to get it out or it's to relieve an itch. Check the floor if you see brown marks you know it was the first one
Anonymous - 8/8/2011 3:21:30 PM

Anonymous - 7/27/2011 3:01:23 PM
Respond to Question
Yes dachshunds are wonderful with children if you get them when they're young or get them from people who have kids. They usually do good either way, but I'm warning you they like to chew on and play with your hands if you ignore them. They need to be walked about once a day minimum.

QUESTION: How will a mini dachshund react if he/she is left alone in the maximum of 5 hours? And can they take the cold during the night? Thanks
Anonymous - 7/9/2011 10:29:36 PM
Respond to Question
Hopefully, you are NOT thinking about leaving a mini dachshund OUTside. It would freeze to death! My daughter & I have one each and they like the exact perfect INside temperatures that you and I do. If it is a few cooler degrees they shiver like crazy. If it's a few degrees hotter they act like they are having a heat stroke. Do not get/adopt this type of dog if you do not plan on spoiling them. They get VERY attached and want to be with this person 24/7. (& for that matter why would you get a dog that you plan on leaving outside at all?)
Anonymous - 11/27/2011 2:06:08 AM
We left my dachshund alone for a max of around 3-4 hours at a young age - she did fine. A little crying at first, but they'll get used to it the more it happens. She just gets really excited when we come home :) And I let me doxie sleep in bed with me at night, my boyfriend has the A/C on ALL night and a fan blowing (he has to sleep in the cold) -- from this, I found my doxie prefers to sleep under the covers up against my body, or she's too cold.
She also hates going outside when its chilly too.
Hope that helps!
