Dachshund Breed Information

Breed Group: Hound

Weight: 11-32 lbs

Height: 5-9 inches

Color(s): solid red, sable, or cream; black and tan, chocolate and tan, wild boar and tan, gray and tan, or fawn and tan, brindle

Overview

The Dachshund was originally developed in German hundreds of years ago. They were originally bred for hunting Badger, hence the name Dachshund. "Dachs" is the German word for Bader. The elongated body and the shortened legs were bred into this dog to dig the prey out and go inside their burrows forcing them to leave their dens. The Miniature variety was bred to hunt hare and stoat. This breed has also been known to hunt foxes and otters along with the badger.

Character

Dachshunds are a very clownish breed and can be very mischievous at times. A very intuitive dog, the Dachshund is now most commonly seen as a companion rather than a hunter. This breed loves to be around people and should never exhibit signs of aggression or timidity. The Dachshund is an all around friendly dog, is very outgoing, and is sure to steal the hearts of everyone he meets.

Temperament

The Dachshund is a fun loving dog, tenacious, and lively, but can become jealous and be very irritable. This breed does not do well with smaller children, but can do very well with older and more considerate children. Due to his small size and tiny legs, this breed should not be placed in a home with larger dogs unless they were raised around each other. The Dachshund has the tendency to become jealous, however can do very well with many other toy breeds in the home providing they are not snippy.

Care

The Long Haired variety requires quite a bit of grooming. Being that this dog is so low to the ground, he is prone to getting burrs, sticks, and twigs stuck in his coat which should be removed daily if any are present. Brushing of the coat should be done on a regular basis to prevent tangling and/or matting. The Smooth Haired variety doesn't require much grooming and would respond well to an occasional wipe down with a damp towel, or a harsh towel to remove any dead or loose hair.

Coat

The Dachshund comes in three different varieties. The Smooth Haired Dachshund, Wirehaired Dachshund, and the Longhaired Dachshund. He also comes in two different sizes being standard and miniature. The Longhaired Dachshund has a long and straight coat, with hair slightly feathered and longer on the underbelly, ears, chest, and legs. The Smooth Coat has a straight, smooth, short, and glossy coat that should all be of equal length along the body of the dog. The Wirehaired has a coat of broken appearance with wiry, coarse, and harsh hair.

Training

The Dachshund can be stubborn at times, making training a little bit difficult for the average owner. This breed requires firm and consistent handling, but can be a little sensitive so he should always be corrected in a gentle manner, never harsh or this breed could become submissive and timid. Dachshunds respond best to a variety of training methods.

Activity

The Dachshund can be lively and vivacious, however he does not need much exercise. A short walk per day would suffice for this short-bodied breed. The Dachshund tends to tire out easily so any exercise provided should be given at different times rather than one long walk. This breed is prone to back problems so high jumping and/or running should never be allowed.

QUESTION: do dachshunds have allergies or foot fungus problems, keeps licking his paws raw?

Anonymous - 1/29/2012 12:30:34 PM

Respond to Question

I don't think that's a fungal infection. I had a teacup poodle that did the same thing and my vet told me that it is caused by a puppy being taken away too soon from it's mother. My poodle sucked her paws for her entire lifespan.

QUESTION: Is it normal for a dapple puppy to have one blue eye & one brown eye?

Anonymous - 1/26/2012 4:02:30 PM

Respond to Question

Yes very normal due to the genes of the recessive trait. My own long haired chocolate dapple shows this trait. I think it personalizes my pup quite well and havnt noticed anything wrong with him in the 18 months ive had him now.

For AKC you must wait for the females second heat before breeding, or they will not reg. the pups. (Normally around 1 to 2 yo, depends on dog) Ckc is about worthless as you can just about reg. any dog through it.

QUESTION: We were given a Dachshund about 3 years ago and has been with us ever since but he is very jealous and also a biter, everyone that comes to visit us he will try to bite them. We put him in a cage but it is very frustrating when people come and visit. Just recently he bit my wife which is very close to her, we both couldn't believe it. She had to go see the doctor and get a shot and fill out a report about the incident. We had to take him to the animal society for quarantine for at least ten days. It was a very emotional and very sad moment for us. My question is what would you do in our situation, they told us that he probably should be euthenized because of liability issues. Can a dog like him be cured if he's a biter?

Anonymous - 1/19/2012 10:24:34 PM

Respond to Question

PLEASE GIVE YOUR DOG ANOTHER CHANCE! Your Dachshund can be trained. He needs lots of attention and affection also forgiveness. If you do not wish to deal with him please give him to a Dauchshund rescue group. I had a biter and I worked with her for about 4 months, always watching and correcting her. Today she is a very good dog, she goes everywhere with me and I've had no problems with her biting, growling, etc. Him biting your wife was probably just a reflex action and was not done with intent to harm. Again I plead with you not to have him killed, he's a living being who deserves a chance to live.

QUESTION: Why can't you breed a dapple Dachshund with a dapple?

Anonymous - 1/18/2012 10:41:19 PM

Respond to Question

It is not that you can't. More than likely there will be no problems. The double dabble has the potential to create problems. The dogs could be born with birth defects. Blindness and deformities are not a good start for a new puppy. As I understand there is no way to predict the problems and sometimes there are no issues, but I wouldn't

QUESTION: My dachshund is about 9wks now and has worms, How can I get rid of these? She had them when I brought her home... Please help it is nasty!

Anonymous - 1/6/2012 1:05:17 AM

Respond to Question

Even if your dachshund puppy came with a health certficate, the vet probably will worm them. Which means worms will be coming out for about a week

Anonymous - 2/1/2012 12:51:06 AM

You didn't get a health certificate? You should take him to the vet. If you feel that you don't want to or can't get there, I suggest strongid. I don't know if you can buy it without a prescription. Also any feed store will sell Panicure. This is a general dewormer also. Remember not to go overboard because of the weight of the dog.

Anonymous - 1/23/2012 9:52:34 AM

take your dachshund to the vet to make sure, sometimes they have worms that you cant see and the vet can test a sample

QUESTION: We adopted a 7 year old female Dachshund and we have a 3 year old female Yorkie. Our Dachshund has been peeing and pooping in the house. She does it in the master closet, or in our 2 sons rooms in front of their closet doors. We are really frustrated and not sure why she is doing this or how to break her of it. We have a doggy door to go outside. We put her in a crate when we leave and when we sleep and she will do it even when we are home. Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Respond to Question

Thats a good comment. Also there are pet diapers that can help.

Anonymous - 1/23/2012 9:54:38 AM

We have had that same issue off and on with ours. The best thing that we have done is let her know that it is not okay and put her outside right when we find it also showing her what sheis in touble for. We also put wee-wee pads down in those areas. Dachshunds are very hard headed when it comes to house breaking so stay on it and be patient they are so worth it!!

Depends on how many times your dachshund was bred, the more times, the more puppies. Dont over do it! Or you might have to get a c section

My 11 pound dachshund has had 3 litters. She had 7 in her 1st litter and 6 in the 2nd and 3rd. We could not believe how many puppies a tiny dog like her could have! I think the norm is 4 or 5, though.

QUESTION: I am wanting to buy a Dachshund puppy and have done a bunch of research and was wondering, are they bad chewers, & which sex is better, Male or female? I am a Stay at Home Mom to 2 Sons, who attend Pre school & Kindergarden

Anonymous - 12/4/2011 8:58:56 PM

Respond to Question

There is always a risk of chewing with any puppy. The reason they do this is because of the constant change they experience with their teeth and gums. Also dogs instinctively have a desire to chew since bones and etc.. are a natural part of their diet. I always correct mine by telling them no no and then handing them something appropriate for them to chew on. They learn quickly if it is consistent. If you have small children..you may want to find another breed. Also the choice of male and female is totally a personal one. They both make excellent pets!
