QUESTION: We just adopted a Corgi/mix. She is 6 yrs old. At the shelter they had to put a feeding tube in her which required shaving her around the neck. Her hair has not grown back. Surgery was in August 2011. How long will it take to grow back?
mlslolson - 11/29/2011 11:30:06 AM
Respond to Question
My corgi did the same thing when she got fixed. The hair would never grow back. My vet gave me some omega 3/fish oil to put in her dry food. Its a liquid so you can just put a squirt or two on it. Her hair grew back quick and it is very healthy. She was 5 months when she got fixed and her hair didn't grow back till she was around 9 months because of the fish oil.

QUESTION: I live on a small farm. My Corgi is chasing and killing my chickens when she is out of her pen. And kills my pet rabbits. What can I do to stop this?
Anonymous - 10/5/2011 9:00:22 PM
Respond to Question
when your corgi starts to chase your other animals, put a mussel on your corgi, leave it on for five min. while telling her that this is bad behavior. just as children they do not like restraint. when you tell her its bad be in a quiet voice and at her level. when you release her, she might try and chase the animals again put mussel back on, it will take more then one musseling to gain control. if every time she goes out and behaves bad use a mussel she will learn not to do this and you will only have to show her the mussel to gain control. Best of luck to you. remember they hate to be mussled so only 5 min at a time, or put on every time before going out while telling her why she must wear it, they are very smart and learn fast. hope this helps you

QUESTION: How often and how much should you feel a 8 week old corgi puppy?
Anonymous - 9/24/2011 11:48:10 PM
Respond to Question
Corgi's stomachs are tiny so feed small amounts of dry puppy food 3 or 4 times a day. I would take a handful and put into a bowl.. If the puppy gobbles it up immediately, give her some more. At this age, you do not have to worry about your corgi being a chow hound.
She is growing rapidly and is very active.
My nine month old gets a lot of exercise and is fed two meals of approximately one and a half cups each plus training treats.

QUESTION: i have a beagle at home who is 7 do you think if i got a corgi they would get along?
Anonymous - 7/25/2011 3:12:42 PM
Respond to Question
When you are bringing home a new friend remember you are top dog so it all depends on how you react. First protect your new friend as you introduce - talk quietly as you tell them each others names and thier stories as your talking they will sniff each other this is how they get acquainted. Show your affection for both dogs as you tell your old friend how great he/she is this will give reasurance that he/she is not being replaced but gaining a playmate, now there are dogs who will never get along with others this could come from not being socialized as a young pup or abuse or just born that way. If your dog has been taught to get along with others the other breed should make no difference. I have 6 dogs, different breeds and sizes they get along.good luck.

QUESTION: are corgi easily people friendly
Anonymous - 7/10/2011 10:53:37 PM
Respond to Question
Our Corgi was early obedience trained & whenever we walked her (daily) we encouraged interactment with both other dogs & people. As she got older, she loved everybody, old folks, young folks, children, babies, cats, dogs, everybody....however, still hated horses and barked at cows.
Anonymous - 7/31/2011 12:31:21 PM
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is highly intelligent, loyal, able and willing to please their owners. Corgis are extremely active and are good with children so long as the dog sees humans as above him in the pack order. Wary of strangers, it should be properly socialized and trained when it is still young. Usually good with non-canine animals.

QUESTION: I live in an apartment with a Papillion and my mom who is disabled . Would a corgi be a good match or not?
Anonymous - 7/10/2011 1:25:06 PM
Respond to Question
I think Corgis are the best. They do shed. We call it lucky corgi hair... We have ours trimmed in the summer, which keeps him cooler and helps a lot with the shedding.
Anonymous - 12/8/2011 7:58:38 PM
Corgi's shed like crazy - should be outside a lot
Anonymous - 9/9/2011 6:34:26 PM
Corgis will do fine in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised. With enough exercise they can be calm indoors, but will be very active if they are lacking. Will do okay without a yard so long as they are taken for daily walks. Naturally active little dogs, they should always be encouraged to remain so. They need to be taken on a daily, long walk.

QUESTION: Is it likely that a 1 year old Corgi which has not been socialized will become social with a lot of loving attention? I have cats. Are the usually agressive toward cats?
Anonymous - 6/19/2011 3:48:23 PM
Respond to Question
My corgi grew up with cats, so she loves cats. She kinda thinks she is a cat. So yes corgis will do great with cats. Just make sure to supervise the visits between the animals to make sure everything goes okay.
Anonymous - 12/7/2011 6:47:17 PM
If they go to a social training facility like best friends it can break the wall that holds the social activity inside and let it burst so that you have a brand new kind social corgi

QUESTION: I have a purebred female Border Collie that I have been asked to breed with a purebred registered Pembroke Corgi. My female is medium build pure black & white. What is the likelihood of the puppies having the corgi frame with the short legs, etc? Thank you!
Anonymous - 6/14/2011 6:56:11 PM
Respond to Question
My cousin has a border collie/corgi cross. They're called borgis and this dog is awesome! He's very loyal yet friendly to others and learns quickly. Like the border collie he likes having a job and in his case that is fetching. The nice thing about this dog is that he isn't quite as hyper as a border collie. he is black and white with the erect (large) corgi ears. He has a long body with short legs but a little longer that a corgi.

I have a corgi/border collie she is amazing. The most loyal and obediant dog I have ever had. Everybody loves her and askes where to get one. She was also very easy to train. We have even been offered money to sell her. the combination is great.
Anonymous - 11/12/2011 1:33:46 PM
Lots of lines are crossed when breeding dogs. Any good groomer would tell you not mix breeds with 2 different types of hair/fur. The same would hold true with dogs of different build and size. Since both breeds are herders, what would be the point of cross breeding the two. You would have a 50/50 chance of the dogs having the characteristics of either parent and then what to do with puppies, They might be really cute but they would be no good for breeding. What would you breed them with? You would have to disclose the cross breeding, because if you didn't, the owner could be held accountable for the new puppies. Could you imagine breeding a corgie to one of the puppies that might look like a corgie and getting a collie'? Good Luck.

Anyone have any ideas? I just dont want to spend the next 14 years of my life cleaning up poop and pee every day. I mean do they normally have IBS as dogs? or something he has been to the vet 2 times. I think my vet is lame he told us he was being a teenager. I know switch vets right?!

Anonymous - 5/18/2011 9:38:58 AM
Respond to Question
The best thing to do is take your corgi out before you put him in the cage. Take away the food and the water for the night and see if that helps. It could also be the dog food causing the problems. Try changing to a whole grain no filler food like Chicken Soup for the dog lovers soul. Its good food and it has more nutrients for the dogs.
Anonymous - 12/7/2011 6:50:29 PM
You should take your corgi to another vet. But, it could be possible that he's just not house-trained.

QUESTION: Hi. Some of you may know me from the Finnish Spitz page. On that page I am asking for advice on how to convince my family to get another dog, and it should be a Spitz. But, I also want a Corgi for my very own. I have a very small yard but a HUUUGGGEEE park where I live, and I have two very intimidating dogs. One is a Belgian Maiyow and doesn't get along with other dogs immediately, but soon warms up to them. My other dog is a lab, and he is super friendly and always moving. I have two questions. Would the Corgi be fine going on a daily walk to get his energy out, and would the Corgi be fine with the two other dogs in the house? And, let me know if you know where Corgis are being sold, but make sure that the Corgisare in Colorado.

Our Corgi is very very smart. His best trick though is that he has me trained. Apparently I learn very quickly.

After repeated showings not long. My husband steals my corgi's nose and teases him about not giving it back. Absolutely hilarious trick!
chowchownow22 - 7/21/2011 5:24:21 PM
My 3 year old Corgi learned pretty quickly. I think it only took about a week for him to fetch the ball bring it back and drop it at your feet. if you don't pick it up in a timely manner he will pick it up for you and put it in your hands. Very smart dogs.
Anonymous - 6/17/2011 12:05:08 PM

Put your Corgi in the bath tub with a little water and pull the plug. Splash with her and then eventually she will chase the swirling water as it goes down the drain. The gurgles from the tub draining help add excitement too.
chowchownow22 - 7/21/2011 5:25:29 PM
all you need to do is get your corgi used to the water thats what i did
Anonymous - 6/13/2011 3:34:55 PM
I started with a small wading pool in my yard one day last week, let my Pembroke Corgi out and I heard barking, looked out the window and the little girl was in the pool play like crazy, now I can't keep her out.
Anonymous - 5/23/2011 10:13:36 AM
Our Corgi was afraid to go swimming at first as well. But after he became severely attached to us, we went camping and he couldn't wait to run into the water to swim with us. Unfortunately there was a "No Dog in Swimming Area" rule. But he wanted so badly to go swimming with his daddy. He's also come to enjoy his baths, but he didn't as a puppy. It just takes time. Also try taking their favorite treat and playing with it in the water. Ours LOVES to chase things.

yes, as previously stated, corgi's mostly in summer and winter-when the days get longer and then when the days get shorter.

With 7 Corgis in the house I can say from personal experience, they sooo shed. Invest in a furminator brush and be faithful about using it every month and you won't have much hair around the house.

QUESTION: Are Corgi's able to be left alone inside without being in a kennel without getting into a alot of stuff ???
Anonymous - 3/4/2011 9:28:25 AM
Respond to Question
Our corgi is a house corgi. I walk him in the morning and he stays home alone during the day until the kids get home from school. When he was little, he loved to chew barbie dolls... Then again, he's not very tall and the kids learned to put their stuff up! Otherwise, he has had no problems with getting into stuff at all!!!
Anonymous - 12/8/2011 8:02:26 PM
My 3 year old corgi has no problem being left out. He is never put in a kennel when we are not home.
Anonymous - 6/17/2011 12:06:46 PM
It kinda depends if the corgi is taking a nap then you might be safe if it just started taking its nap otherwise it just depends on how well the corgi is trained :)

QUESTION: What are corgi's bred from?
Anonymous - 2/17/2011 4:58:09 PM
Respond to Question
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is older than the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, with the Pembroke being bred out of the Cardigan. Both Corgi varieties may be a descendant of the Keeshond, Pomeranian, Schipperkes and the Swedish Vallhund. Some say the older Cardigan was from Cardiganshire brought there by the Celts in 1200 BC. Whereas the Pembroke's ancestors were introduced by Flemish weavers to the Celts in the 1100s.

QUESTION: Why is my corgi afraid of a dog leash?
Anonymous - 2/16/2011 4:38:10 PM
Respond to Question
my corgi is afraid of random things: he barks and tries to hide his head under my arm when the windshield wipers are on in the car, he barks when I cast a fishing pole, and he barks when I take a candle from the wall sconce to light it. it's a scared, wimper bark.
Anonymous - 12/11/2011 12:31:31 AM
My Corgi actually carried her leash whenever we said "walk", she would go get her leash and bring it to us. However, we did find from obiedence training on that she would only heal when off leash and NEVER while on leash.
Anonymous - 7/31/2011 12:41:23 PM
That could be due to a number of things. But the more you work with your corgi the better he/she will get at walking with the leash. It's all about practice and being calm with your dog.
Anonymous - 4/21/2011 6:17:21 PM
Your corgi is probably scared of being choked or something like that :|
