Overview

The Collie is known for his elongated muzzle and coloration. This breed is very intelligent and keen on working as this is a herding breed. Great with children of all ages, providing the dog is well trained and properly socialized.

Character

This gentle breed makes a great household companion. The Collie has an obedient nature, willful, and gentle. Classified as one of the easiest to train breeds in the dog world. This breed is very self-assured, sweet, gentle, and trustworthy.

Temperament

The Collie has a very even and well-mannered temperament. This dog is regularly seen in homes with other animals and children, as they are very gentle and passive. Originally bred for herding, this dog has the tendency to nip at ankles as a pup, however most grow out of this stage. Willing to learn and very loyal, this dog will surely provide you with a lot of love.

Care

The rough variety does not require as much grooming as smooth. Short and stiff coat requires brushing weekly. Smooth variety requires daily brushing to remove any excess hair, and to keep hair from becoming matted. Monthly baths are recommended as their long coat traps dirt. The Collie is a heavy shedder given the season.

Coat

This breed comes in both rough and smooth varieties. Both have same coloration accepted. Most commonly seen in tri-color (black, white and tan), blue merle, and sable and white are also acceptable colors for this breed.

Training

This very intelligent breed is easy to train. This willful dog requires a gentle hand to avoid shyness and refusal to cooperate with his owner. Trained for herding purposes on occasion, this breed has a strong will to work and to please his owner.

Activity

This large breed responds best with a medium sized yard. Will do well in apartment life if given regular exercise. It is not recommended that this dog be left outdoors for long periods of time in hot weather, however if given the proper shade and water, will do okay.

QUESTION: when does a male collie reach his full size and how can you tell if he is a long haired or short haired collie?

Anonymous - 11/6/2011 1:18:35 AM

Respond to Question

Full size is usually reached about 18 months to 2 years. Full rough coat about 3 years old. You can tell a rough from a smooth by the age of 3 weeks.

wywildfire - 1/28/2012 10:18:36 PM

A male should reach full zize by a year. If your dog has a smooth coat it will be short. If he is a rough, it should be longer and softer and you'll see the "feathers" or long hair on the front legs and tail. Some rough collies tend to have more hair than others, but you should easily be able to tell a smooth collie from a rough.

I hear collie's have terrible eye problems, i do not think you can identify them though, they just become blind i think, i would try looking them up on the internet!

Anonymous - 8/6/2011 11:01:23 AM

A pair of puppies will bond to each other but also keep each other busy. A single puppy will bond to you quicker but keep you busy!

wywildfire - 8/30/2011 9:44:10 PM

You can if they are brother + sister. If not, think about pack dominance even though collies are very good with other pets.

QUESTION: I am planing on getting a collie. I also have a cockapoo, and chow chow. They are both puppies and do very well together. If I get a collie will he fit in well with my other two great puppies?

Anonymous - 7/7/2011 1:27:37 PM

Respond to Question

I had a collie and a cockapoo who were best friends for 12 years.

Anonymous - 1/1/2012 11:30:43 AM

Well, i hear collies are good with dogs and other animals, but it depends on if the other animals are ok with the collie.

Anonymous - 8/19/2011 10:14:01 PM

The Collie should fit in fine with the other 2 if so you can put up a gate and let them slowly get use to each other. Usually collies will do fine with any dog and usually are very friendly to them to. Hope It Helps! :)

Anonymous - 7/12/2011 12:51:13 AM

Yes he would. (: Provided if you give him the right training and the right introduction methods. From countless of Collie books and webpages i've read, it shouldn't be hard to fit a Collie in your home. Just understand that your other dogs have feelings too and they may get jealouse if you divide their time on your new dog. Good luck (:

QUESTION: i have a collie and its a puppy about 12 weeks and every time its in the house it likes to chew or bite things - what should i do to make it stop biting things ?

Anonymous - 7/3/2011 3:10:01 AM

Respond to Question

with collies make sure it always has a chew toy becuase during this time he is teething just like babies so always have something for him to chew on and if he chews on the furnicher or something that you dont like just firmly but not agrasively say "no" and you can put him out side with a toy or something to chew on and also you can always praise the puppy when its chewing on the toy so he knows if he goes to the toy its always fun and it is good to go to! Hope That Helps! :)

Anonymous - 7/12/2011 12:54:02 AM

I suggest to get chew toys/bones and give them to your collie with positive reinforcement so he knows it is ook to chew those things

QUESTION: I want to get a collie puppy, but my main concern is potty training. I would like the collie to "do its business" outside, not inside, so how could I do this?

Anonymous - 6/14/2011 7:45:50 PM

Respond to Question

I got my collie when she was just a puppy and it was very easy if you want a brand new puppy like i got it is not very hard to potty train them you could start out with puppy pads and have this scent spray you can buy at pet stores to help and also everytime when you think or after he or she eats or drinks just take them right out side or have a timer go off and have a schedual. Soon it will be great cause my collie does many tricks and when it has to go to the bathroom she just barks to when she needs to go out. Hope it Helps! :)

QUESTION: I have a double dilute collie that I rescued He is 9mo old and he is both deaf and blind-are theese conditions correctable thru surgery or otherwise ? He is very well behaved and loving and adjusts well to new things despite his handicaps.

Anonymous - 6/10/2011 8:32:57 PM

Respond to Question

They are not correctable. If you type blind and deaf dogs into your internet search engine you will find websites that will help you and your collie live happy and healthy.

wywildfire - 7/22/2011 4:23:09 PM

when you say a double dilute I guess you mean both parents are blue merle, this is a inon desirable breeding because the merle in both parents will produce just what he has. no surgery will help sorry

Anonymous - 5/19/2011 11:01:16 AM

Respond to Question

Almost all older dogs will make an active puppy leave them alone. Occaisionally one will adopt a puppy, if the older dog isn't in a lot of pain. A young but mature dog of the opposite sex with a campatible personality might be a better option as far as how quickly they become friends.

wywildfire - 5/27/2011 12:02:18 PM

yes, collies are very loving and gentle.

QUESTION: What is the best food for collie puppy?

Anonymous - 5/17/2011 12:45:18 PM

Respond to Question

My breeder recommends Canidae all life stages with a tablespoon or so of the similar canned mixed in along with. Also, recommend the Nupro joint supplement mixed in, with a little water makes a kind of gravy your collie pup or collie adolescent will love. Refrain from people food lest they become picky eaters. Remove the dog dish after 30 minutes to discourage picky eating.

Anonymous - 11/18/2011 12:41:40 PM

A good quality puppy food which has a meat not a grain for the first ingredient. I feed my growing collies a good large breed puppy formula for the first 18 months of life.

wywildfire - 5/18/2011 1:37:31 PM

QUESTION: are collies scared of everything?

Anonymous - 5/15/2011 4:30:10 PM

Respond to Question

Yes, if the collie is not properly socialized. Unfortunately some puppy mills jumped on the "band wagon" that the Lassie films caused and created some very timid and nervous family lines. Always try to meet the breeder and at least one of the parent dogs. Meeting both parents and other related dogs would be best.

Collies are by far one of the most friendliest dogs i've met (: Of course, it may show aggression if the opposite party may seem to be a treat to you and your family. Socialize them well when they are still a puppy. Good luck

QUESTION: are collies lazy or active ?

Anonymous - 4/30/2011 11:38:04 PM

Respond to Question

If you let a collie loose or if they are not indoors with nothing to do, they are very active. See they are herding dogs so being active is in their blood, I have never owned a collie but I have done a lot of research on them.

Anonymous - 8/19/2011 10:21:37 PM

They can be both lazy and active! My smooth Collie is a couch potato at home but loves to go for long hikes and enjoys a good romp at the dog park.

Anonymous - 8/5/2011 12:03:29 AM

A healthy Collie that is properly socialized (so it is not a nervous ninny) should be in between.

QUESTION: How bad do collies shed?

Anonymous - 1/20/2011 1:37:41 PM

Respond to Question

Rough and Smooth Collies usually shed their winter coats in the spring. Rough Females will shed their undercoats and some of their outer coat resulting in a lot less hair in the summer compared to the winter. Rough Males shed their undercoat but keep their long out coat during the summer. (That is why "Lassie" is always a trained male dog in the films) In the fall Collies will also shed some of the summer coat so they can grow a winter coat. My collies live outside mot of the year and a quick brushing once a week is sufficient unless they are shedding. Collies and most other dogs that spend most of their time inside will shed constantly. In hot humid areas PLEASE check your Rough Collie daily for HOTSPOTS!!

QUESTION: i have a minature collie he loves to run and gives flea baths and i have 2 other dogs but they never want a flea bath and my collie starts to bite them but he dosent mean to hes a grea dog and he loves people

Anonymous - 11/18/2010 10:17:51 PM

Respond to Question

There is no such thing as a 'miniature collie.' What you have is a sheltie. They are a different breed with different characteristics. As for your question, I would have a friend help you with bathing your dogs. Or use dry shampoo. I had a dog that was terrified of water, but we managed to bathe it. Good luck.

QUESTION: I got a tri Collie purebred about three weeks ago. She was in bad shape and hadn't been groomed for a while. I just took her to the groomer and she pee'd blood. Scared every one. They started talking stones. I'm worried and she will see a vet in a few days. Did some one pawn off a sick animal on me. She is so beautiful, but I will be honest, I can't afford a lot of surgery. What is the prognoses.I want to do my best for her. At this point you know as much as I do

Anonymous - 11/8/2010 6:27:02 PM

Respond to Question

Just an update to my question. She finally got a good going over by my vet and had a bladder infection. It took about a month to get her back on her feet again. According to the vet that I have had for over ten years, she had not had very good care. After three months with me she is now getting on her feet and is such a joy. I am not sorry I rescued her. Still has some problems that is under treatment, but will recover. Hoping for a long life for her.

Anonymous - 1/25/2011 12:27:50 PM

You should definitely check with the breeder to see why he urinated blood.

Anonymous - 1/24/2011 2:08:54 PM

If you cannot care for your Collie, I would surrender her to a NO KILL shelter or organization. They will give her the proper care she deserves, just be careful where you give her to, not all rescues are what they appear to be. Also you should contact her previous owners and demand that they explain to you. And if you can, go to a vet ASAP. Peeing blood is not natural.

wywildfire - 12/9/2010 1:49:13 PM

QUESTION: How much do Collies cost?

Anonymous - 11/2/2010 11:44:47 AM

Respond to Question

A LOT!!!! Well I shouldnt say that it depends on what the breeder decides but usually 600 or more just estimating, most of the collies I looked at were around that price range, because I too would like a collie.

Anonymous - 8/19/2011 10:30:32 PM

That depends entirely on the quality and the source. You may find a free collie in need of a good home or a rescue for less than $200 (but make sure it is really a rescue and not a puppy mill or profit business in disguise. In my area healthy pets from caring breeders can start at $500 to $2,000 for a serious show prospect.

wywildfire - 12/9/2010 1:47:16 PM

QUESTION: What size is a collie when it is a puppy?

Anonymous - 9/29/2010 4:28:53 PM

Respond to Question

Collie males tend to be 60-80 lbs and females 50-70 lbs and puppies tend to be 12 lbs and under. This breed needs an average grooming and an average amount of exercise and then the will be pleased. Collies are the most loving breeds and the loving will not stop until they die. I recently lost mine 1 month ago he was the best dog I ever had.

Anonymous - 1/21/2011 9:12:04 AM

The size of a collie puppy depends on the size of the parents. The average collie is 50lbs- 65lbs for a female.Males are 65-80. Puppies will vary in size. some weigh 5-8 lbs for the females some males weigh 7-12 lbs. This is an average.

collies4u - 11/1/2010 3:51:15 PM

I can tell you from first hand experience as I've had a collie. If it is a male it will be 60 to 70 lbs. when full grown. Tons and tons of grooming required !!!!! Not a low maintenance dog and needs LOTS and LOTS of exercise or they go crazy !

Anonymous - 10/30/2010 4:14:57 PM

QUESTION: Is there a chart available that will project the adult weight of a full size collie from a puppy. I have looked at at alot of sites with no results.

Anonymous - 9/29/2010 9:55:26 AM

Respond to Question

Your best indicator would be the size of the parents and grandparents of the collie. The next best thing would be the history of the family line. However, since Collies and Shelties were interbred in their early developement we occaisionally see a dog mature to an inbetween size. One of my AKC shelties matured at 40#!! That breeding won't be repeated!

wywildfire - 12/9/2010 1:44:00 PM

Well in the collie books it gives averages for adults. females 50-65lbs and males 60-75 lbs. But mostly I go by what the males and females adults weigh.

collies4u - 11/1/2010 3:53:32 PM

I can tell you as I've had one. A rough collie ( Lassie Collie). There is also a Border Collie which is totally different and a Smooth Collie. If the dog is a male full grown it will be 60 to 70 lbs. and a bit less for a female. They are super high maintenance as far as grooming and need TONS and TONS of exercise. Good Luck and find a reputable breeder. DO NOT buy one from a puppy farm, have one shipped to you OR from a pet store.
