Overview

The Cockapoo is highly intelligent, retaining much of that from the Poodle breed, and becoming very popular as a companion animal. A sturdy little dog, they have a great disposition. This breed can also be somewhat passive and can also be dog aggressive if not given the proper socialization.

Character

The Cockapoo is loyal, intelligent, and very affectionate. This dog is fairly easy to train being mixed with what is said to be one of the smartest dogs in the world. Being that this dog is mixed with the Poodle, he makes a wonderful training student. Having a very sweet nature, this dog is sure to steal the hearts of many.

Temperament

This breed is eager to please, vigorous, and friendly, making him a popular choice as a companion. The Cockapoo generally gets along with children and other animals, but should always be supervised. The Poodle and Spaniel in this mix can both have aggression problems if not dealt with at a young age.

Care

The Cockapoo should be brushed and combed regularly. It is said that this breed is little to no shedding, however when being brushed hair does come out making shedding even less common. Clipping is required at least once a year.

Coat

The Cockapoo is a mixed breed without a breed standard, however the preferred coat is dense, curly or heavily wavy, and close. The Cockapoo should carry coat characteristics from both the Poodle and the Cocker Spaniel.

Training

The Cockapoo is a very intelligent dog, making training a breeze at times. This dog does well in obedience, and with the right training techniques and proper handling this dog will thrive. This dog requires firm handling, but can be somewhat sensitive to the tone of your voice so training should be consistent and relatively firm yet gentle.

Activity

The Cockapoo is a happy-go-lucky dog that loves to run and play with his family. No yard is fine, but this dog does require daily walks. They also have the tendency to overeat so exercise is needed for this dog to stay healthy.

QUESTION: I have a cockapoo 5 years old, he has bitten me several times and the two incidents I ended up in the emergency room for stitches. He is loving most of the time but growls at me when I correct him. He has a temper. He loves to place a mark in my furnitures. I am ready to euthanize him. I hate to think about it, however he gives me no choice. Any suggestions!!!

Anonymous - 1/29/2012 3:45:48 PM

Respond to Question

My 12 yr. Old cockapoo used to get aggressive when i corrected him too. The problem is he believed he's alpha to me. I have retrained him to understand that I am boss, when he does something wrong, I firmly tell him no, then put him in his crate for a time out. He hates being away from "mama" for any period of time that he has learned to stop being aggressive when he doesn 't get his way. If you don't have time to train him or are unable to get him into an obedience class please contact a rescue shelter to take him. Don't put him down for something that isn't his fault. a dog that hasn't been properly trained can always learn to behave with proper, loving training at any age. Especially a dog as smart as a cockapoo

QUESTION: hi I just got a cockapoo and she is soup I know they Love to bite but mine is over the top she makes me draw blood is there any way to at least get her to play "bite" a little easier and how often can you give them a bath

Anonymous - 1/19/2012 11:05:20 PM

Respond to Question

my puppy cockapoo was very very bitey for the first few months. Every time he would start with me I would stick a toy in his mouth that was okay for him to bite on. Also stop playing with him when he bites you and let him know it's not okay. A firm NO ! or yelp from you should help...if they were doing this with their Momma she would probly correct him with a swat ! It is annoying but he does get better. Now my Rocky will bite on my hand occassionally but very very gently.

Anonymous - 1/31/2012 7:09:41 AM

well about biting i'm not sure, cockapoo's usually don't bite, as for how often you give them a bath is recommended once a week.

We have a cockapoo that also is black with some white on his chest. With daily exercise we can keep his weight at around 48 lbs. This past summer he turned 10, and for the past several years I have noticed more and more graying around the mouth and on his paws. It is almost like he's growing a gray beard. His coat is also graying in various shades of silver highlights.

QUESTION: How do we stop an 8 month old puppy from biting everything in sight including mouthing us now.

Anonymous - 11/15/2011 6:45:51 PM

Respond to Question

A nylabone, not rubber because they can tear the rubber off. There are different flavors out there. Cockapoos have very strong puppy teeth. My cockapoo is 11months old and I got her at 6months, so the past 5 months I have purchased different types to stop her chewing on the wood and furniture. She has also torn up my carpet. Its true, they must be exercised everyday to get their energy out.

Anonymous - 1/21/2012 12:07:56 PM

I am getting a cockapoo puppy tomorrow and have been doing extensive research. They say not to give them rawhide treats because once they get wet they swell up and could choke your puppy. I'm not going to use them.

QUESTION: WHAT IS THE NORMAL HEIGHT/WEIGHT FOR A COCKAPOO ? HOW OLD FOR A REGULAR DOG TRIM?

Anonymous - 11/14/2011 1:53:04 PM

Respond to Question

Get a regular hair cut every 6-8 weeks. Cockapoo's hair grows quickly, and also elimnates their bms getting stuck in their rearend fur.

Anonymous - 1/21/2012 12:10:12 PM

10 to 30 pounds and 12 to 16 inches in height is normal for a cockapoo. The first trim should take place at 6 months and occur regularly following that. They can have ear wax build-up so regular ear cleaning is a must.

QUESTION: How do you to keep your Cockapoo calm?

Anonymous - 11/9/2011 4:23:52 PM

Respond to Question

Exercise, give your Cockapoo dog a daily walk. It is your best bet to help get his/her energy out.

Anonymous - 1/21/2012 12:11:50 PM

I find that with my cockapoo I need to sit calmly with her and she will follow my behaviour. Whispering or just simply holding her for a but works as well.

Anonymous - 11/8/2011 2:44:59 PM

Respond to Question

Our 5 year old male cockapoo started having trouble junmping on to the couch, our bed, etc. After an evaluation by our vet, it was decided he has some variation in the spacing of his vertebrae in the mid to lower back. Rest and pain medication were prescribed. The vet said Cocker Spaniels are a breed that tends to have back problems. Good luck with your pooch.

Anonymous - 11/2/2011 7:24:09 PM

Well I have a cockapoo growling and bitting sometimes because he has to go to the bathroom or sometimes some things hurting in his body or somethings hurting him.

Anonymous - 12/26/2011 7:47:59 PM

My cockapoo has been in that stage for a while. He is 8 months old now. He seems to get more nippy when he is tired or when I am not paying attention to him, so I put him in his crate for a Nap. Not as a punishment just a time out. It works.

Anonymous - 12/18/2011 7:31:41 PM

QUESTION: We are planning on getting 2 cockapoos and I am wondering would it be better to get 2 males or a male and a female? Either way they will both be spayed and neutered. Thank you!

Anonymous - 10/15/2011 4:13:30 PM

Respond to Question

I have a male and a female cockapoo. She weighs 15 pounds and he weighs 41- and she is his mother! I have had no problems with them being reunited after 2 years. Somemtimes you can get a little questioning of who is the pack leader when you have 2 or more dogs, I have a total of 4. You will just have to make sure they realize you are the leader and there should be no problems.

Anonymous - 10/18/2011 1:22:59 PM

I have a male and a female cockapoo, and the female is dominant. Totally different personalities but I love them both. Best of Luck!

QUESTION: I've heard that cockapoos can have digestive troubles, anyone experience this.

Anonymous - 10/10/2011 12:56:34 PM

Respond to Question

My cockapoo at stomach issues when we got him at 4 months. He would do a 'reverse sneezing'/coughing noise very often. He would also throw up a lot or dry heave. We switched his food constantly trying to find one that would help the issue and Natural Balance was a miracle! After eating Natural Balance (duck and potato formula) ALL his digestive problems stopped, including the 'reverse sneezing'/coughing. He is a few months over a year old now and we haven't had any problems since we started him on Natural Balance. I would suggest changing his food and seeing what works for him. I thought changing his food wouldn't make a difference but I was in shock how much it helped him. Best of luck! Its no fun having a sick puppy :(

QUESTION: My Vet said my female Cockapoo was in perfect health as she stopped feeding her puppies early as they were on solid food and got big fast. He said don't skip a cycle let her go again. But I have read to skip and let her have puppies only once a year. I have also read let her have them twice and skip once etc.. My vet was a vet for the zoo so it is hard not to listen to him. He said she is in great health and weight no hair shortage so let her go again. I wanted to see what other breeders have to say about past experiences. Thanks

I have a cockpoo and when he gos out he stays close to the house when doing his business

Anonymous - 12/4/2011 12:34:20 PM

Yes make sure you get 1/2 cocker and 1/2 Poodle to make a pure cockapoo and make sure they don't sell lots of breeds or you might not be getting a Cockapoo at all. You want to make sure you keep the Poodle in them and then you will have the smart dog you want. My two dogs go out to pee and stay the length they were told from the house and come when called. They are both Cockapoos.

QUESTION: How can we get our rescue Cockapoo dog to poop in our yard? He will only poop on a walk. Also he goes nuts with barking with other dogs.

Anonymous - 10/2/2011 12:54:48 PM

Respond to Question

Have you tried to pick your Cockapoo's poop up and place it next to a tree in your back yard and leave some of them there? Then don't let him stop on the walk and tie him up outside knowing he needs to poop.... He has to some time. Bring him in and repeat not letting him poop on walk. The smell in yard will let him know this is ok to poop here. Make sure you don't play where you want him to poop so he doesn't get confused.
