Overview

The Chinese Shar-Pei is a somewhat powerful dog. Known for his wrinkles, this breed makes a wonderful watchdog and can at times be intimidating to strangers. Very loyal, and devoted to his family.

Character

The Chinese Shar-Pei is an intelligent, dignified, and calm dog but can also be very alert making him ideal for a guard or watchdog. He has a strong protective instinct so this breed should be well socialized at an early age to avoid shyness or from being overprotective.

Temperament

Alert and confident, the Chinese Shar-Pei makes a wonderful companion to an experienced owner. This breed is not for everyone. He can do well with children, however should be supervised around infants, as this is a powerful dog. Can be somewhat aggressive towards other dogs, but given the right socialization, he can do well.

Care

The coat of the Chinese Shar-Pei is not very high maintenance, however it should be brushed to remove loose or dead hair occasionally. A rubber brush should suffice. The ears should be cleaned regularly as well as under the folds of skin.

Coat

The Chinese Shar-Pei has a very harsh and straight coat. The coat ranges from being either extremely short, to no longer than an inch long at the withers, called a "brush coat."

Training

The Chinese Shar-Pei can be stubborn at times, making him somewhat hard to handle when it comes to training. However, he is very willing to please and is intelligent. Firm handling should be practiced with this breed.

Activity

If given proper exercise, this breed can do okay without a yard. An average sized yard is suggested, but is not required. This breed loves walks with his owner however due to the folds of skin, which can make him overheat, fresh water should always be provided.

QUESTION: I have a 14 mo. old chinese sharpei pug mix. He is a sweet little thing. I give him baths once a week and daily clean his folds around his face as well as clean his ears. But he still has an odor only from his ears down to his snout, how do I get rid of this??? I read that you shouldn't get the ears of this breed wet because of the small canals, so I only damp cloth his face and ears. Should I be brushing his teeth? Help, I'm selling my house and it stinks from him!!! any recommendations/advice please!!!

Respond to Question

brushing your dog's teeth is a good idea. maybe doing a good thorough fold-cleaning more than once.

QUESTION: We have a new sharpei puppy he is ten weeks old. He has gone after me on three different occasions when I was cleanIng his eyes and also cleaning his wrinkles is this normal at such a young age????

Anonymous - 2/4/2012 3:23:50 PM

Respond to Question

Use a soft cloth to clean his eyes, but don't just go straight to the eyes. Engage your puppy, pet him, and let him smell the cloth. Do this frequently -- and let him smell it after you clean his eyes. This helps him develop trust. Also, as pointed out by another user, pet him frequently, including gently touching his face and around his eyes so that this kind of contact becomes normal for him. The same principles apply with training him for nail clipping.

Anonymous - 4/18/2012 7:19:41 PM

my 4 month old shar pei pup does the same thing. i was told that you can put the pup on its back and that shows that you are in control. hope it helps

Anonymous - 4/5/2012 3:04:11 PM

Be firm with your sharpei and let him know who is the boss. The eyes, etc., are things you have to do to the dog for many years. Again be firm and try touching the dogs paws, around the eyes, etc., just to get it use to this; it will help the dogs behavior.

QUESTION: Hi i have a female 8 month shar pei that is beautiful, she is amazing, but i am concerned that she is a little skinny? She is a pure bred dog and has a blue and black tongue, has the characteristics of a shar pei but she is just skinny, is that a problem? if anyone knows, please email me with advice. Thank you

Anonymous - 1/27/2012 1:29:07 PM

Respond to Question

My shar pei is the same but he is a healthy weight the vet said some are diffrent then others.

Anonymous - 4/25/2012 9:24:17 PM

It's hard to discuss concerns about weight without also talking about feeding habits and diet. What do you feed your shar pei? How often? When does she eat/does not eat? Etc. Also, bone-mouth Shar Peis tend to run a bit thinner than meat-mouths, but not excessively -- and this can vary by the specific breeding line.

QUESTION: I just have 2 questions - my dog has 2 teeth in front of her front teeth - is that normal? How long would someone recommend a shar pei be walked every day? thank you

Anonymous - 10/30/2011 2:41:21 PM

Respond to Question

the two smaller teeth are decidious and if not falling out by 8 months of age. they need to be removed by your veterinarian as they can force your sharpeis adult teeth to be misaligned.

Anonymous - 2/20/2012 12:19:01 PM

Well first off, no that is not something i'd consider normal. You should have a vet check it out. Second, it depends on the age of your shar pei. You should first try 30 mins and then progress to adding 10 mins evry other day. ALWAYS have some water for the dog as it quickly gets hot and might over heat.

QUESTION: How do I know if my chinese shar-pei has had a stoke or heart attack?

Anonymous - 9/23/2011 3:30:35 PM

Respond to Question

Trust me you will know. If it is a stroke, your chinese shar-pei will be paralyzed from one side since a stroke is the lack of oxygen through the veins and a heart attack well that one might b hard to tell but your dogs attitude will quickly change.

QUESTION: We have a sharpei puppy and we need something to help improve her smell. Im thinking it is her diet. I had her on the same brand but switched flavors and it changed the way she smelled!! Im wondering what it best for her coat and smell? Also we bathe her when she stinks so every 2-3 days but she could use a bath everyday!!! Help!

Anonymous - 8/6/2011 12:12:35 PM

Respond to Question

I have a male and a female Chinese shar-pei. The male never had a smell but my female did. I took her to the vet and it does have a lot to do with there allergies but it can also be an infection. My vet gave me some antibiotics and it helped within 3 days. Her smell was awful, not the normal dog smell. I can't even explain what it was like. All I can say is it was horrible. She doesn't smell at all now!! So maybe try some antibiotics. They helped Myla!!

Anonymous - 2/21/2012 8:14:50 PM

if you overbathe your sharpei you strip the natural oils on their coat. my vet recommends my sharpeis get a bath every other week, ears once a week, eyes cleaned daily. carrots and broccoli floretts worked to change the naturaul sweet/sour smell of my dogs

Anonymous - 2/20/2012 12:23:42 PM

I have cared for many dogs in my day. With my shar Pei's though I find that making sure their ears are cleaned out on a regular basis. Use any Dog ear Cleaner and follow the directions. I think you will find that awful scent to go away.

Anonymous - 2/2/2012 5:25:44 PM

One last thing with the smell; this breed does not like water or take it easy of the baths and not many vets understand the breed. Look and watch how your dog responds to treatments.

QUESTION: i just recently adopted a shar pei and i live on a lake. will she ever warm up to the water?

Anonymous - 8/1/2011 11:53:14 PM

Respond to Question

My Shar-Pei's biggest fear in life was water. He'd run around to the other side of the house when I filled his water bowl, and forget bath's. Rain caused him to try and chew through all entry and screen doors. No matter what I did, nothing could ever calm this fear. Sorry I couldn't offer any helpful advice, but I wanted you to know you aren't alone.

I have a shar pei shes a little over a year old; i take her to the lake every night after work! she LOVES it and loves swimming! So i dont think its the breed that doesn't like the water! the first time i brought her i got in the water with her and the second time i brought her favorite toy and threw it in reaching distance and she went in by herself! give it time im sure your pei will also love it!

QUESTION: i have 2 full bred chinese shar-peis, i have a cream colored male and a blue female. i have a question about their color. what does dilute mean? like if their apricot dilute or blue dilute what does that mean? ive asked several people and they have all given me different answers! so PLEASE HELP! thanks, Vanessa, KY

Anonymous - 8/1/2011 1:43:38 AM

Respond to Question

dilute means red dilute red nose red pads red anus, blue dilute, blue nose, blue pads, blue anus.....same body color as coat color dilute.

Anonymous - 2/20/2012 12:31:17 PM

Dilute means the muzzle is pinkish and the puppies are not likely to have that black muzzle. It also means that its not a pure color. The dogs puppies will have different colors which means your buyers will have more options to choose from. WOW you hav a blue chinese shar-pei ?? You should breed her with another blue since that color is rare and you can sell it even pricier.

Anonymous - 12/5/2011 2:20:15 AM

ok so when we breed our shar-peis, are they going to be any certain color...does dilute mean they have a dominent gene? im just so confused i know we have an apricot dilute and i think she is a blue dilute im just not sure if her nose is black or not? if she is or isnt a dilute what would be differnt about there puppies if anything? Vanessa KY again lol

Anonymous - 8/9/2011 1:26:57 AM

Basicly it means their pigment is the same color of the dog and not black. If it is blue they should have grey nose and pads and lavender tounge. It is also ressive to the regular colored pigment like black. Also do not confuse a snow nose on creams as dilute. Now apricot dilute will have an apricot colored nose and not black. Blue is the dilute of black and lilac is the dilute of chocolate.

The chinese shar pei breed description includes a dislike of water - make the first bath only feet deep in water and rub and massage alot. i have a rescue and we had to bathe her with soapy wash cloths add rinse while someone else massaged now shes okay with baths my 4 puppies i started a playful bath with them asap and are okay. i have had 1 that kept swimming in my koi pond i dont think she knew, her breed classes her as not a water lover

I have found that shar peis hate water except to drink. I have had them get in the water with me by calling and they whinned all the way. At the ocean 25-50 feet away from the surf. I have not meet one that likes shar peis and I have raised them since the 80's.

QUESTION: are kidney problems common in shar pei's

Anonymous - 7/16/2011 6:09:15 PM

Respond to Question

Unfortunately, YES shar pei's are prone to kidney problems and even oral cancer. It's all in the genes of this breed. Remember that this is breed is believed to have some chow chow (another type of breed) in their blood. The chow chow was used to help the breed from extinction

Anonymous - 12/5/2011 2:23:14 AM

Yes, very often so and little cure

QUESTION: I am very interested in getting one of these awesome dogs. The lab I had before has recently passed. My old dog and I often went to the dog park and always going on outtings with friends and their dogs. I see that normally the Shar-Pei breed does not do well with other dogs. Can this be avoided by early socialization?

Anonymous - 7/9/2011 3:06:15 AM

Respond to Question

Yes, they can be great with other animals. I have a 3 year old female Sharpei and six cats. She has never hurt one of my cats and she even sleeps with me and 2-4 cats on the bed at night. Sometimes she will chase them, if they stop running she stops chasing. I found that taking my dog to the dog park helped a lot in getting her socialized around other dogs. You just have to work with them.

Anonymous - 11/10/2011 6:09:02 PM

I have had Shar Pei's for over 25 years. It's the only breed I would consider. I feel safe, confident, and loved. Please remember to socialize your pup. They are great with other animals providing you get them used to being around other animals. One word of caution - males can be dominant so be cautious around other male dogs (if you decide to purchase a male). We find that pairs are wonderful - they keep each other company, and are really very self sufficient and smart. They are easily trained, but you need to be firm - if you give in, you will have lost the battle forever :)

Anonymous - 7/19/2011 9:22:29 PM

Of course! Any dog can be good with socialization!

QUESTION: Hey, is it normal that my 2 month old pure shar pei is really shy? he barks at my mom sometimes, when she comes into the house, hes never barked at me, cz i am the leader, for some reason he doesnt like strangers, he will avoid them, anyhwhere, any time he sees a person he hides behind me or if we're at home he will hide under the table and bark. It this a normal behaviour? people tell me its cause hes still young, that once he gets older he will become less shy/scared of people. He sniffs them if they dont move or make eye contact, bt as soon as they move towards him he backs away.

Respond to Question

YOUR SHAR PEI IS STILL YOUNG, IT IS BEST TO ASSOCIATE HIM WITH WHOM HE WILL BE AROUND THE MOST THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE NOW WHILE HE IS A BABY. ONCE OLDER HE WILL KNOW WHO AND WHAT TO PROTECT AND GUARD. HE WILL WALK IN FRONT OF YOU AT ALL TIMES HIS TAIL WILL STAY UPWARDS, AND IF HE SENSES DANGER HE WILL GO STRAIGHT TOWARDS IT BEFORE IT COMES TO YOU. SHAR PEIS ARE THE BEST BREED IN THE WORLD. I AM A FORMER OWNER OF A BLACK AND WHITE FLOWERED SHAR PEI AND I HAD HIM SINCE HE WAS THREE MONTHS OLD. HE PASSED ON OCT. 24 2010 DUE TO CANCER BUT HE WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.. QUESTION: We have a two year old male Shar Pei he is a rescue dog.Tanner is a very lovable dog, and is great with people, his big problem is other dogs. Tanner broke loose from me on a dog walk and attacked another dog while it was on his walk. Needless to say Tanner is not welcome at friends and families homes, if they have pets.We are Trying to change this unacceptable behavior. Any suggestions?

Anonymous - 6/13/2011 3:17:51 PM

Respond to Question

Take your shar pei on daily walks and every time he see's another dog without acting up, give him a treat and praise him. Every time he does act up, turn around and walk away from the other dog. He doesn't have to like other dogs, he just can't attack them.

QUESTION: I recently adopted a pure bred sharpei - he's 18 months old and when the owners brought him they left him on a 5 acr farm with sheep...he is very friendly with my partner and myself not really many people. He has changed considering i've had him a week and he has become a full inside dog ..my question is how do I stop him from biting me??? He is NO good with dogs so I cant walk him and he will ask to go to the toilet but not always and goes all over my white carpet minutes after I take him out..I stand out with him for like 20 mins..I need a little help. So this week I have a dog trainer coming I would love any advice and help please thanks

Anonymous - 6/5/2011 3:10:06 AM

Respond to Question

I hope the trainer has given you help by now! Pei's are dogs that like to be in control, it is up to you to become the alfa person and make him listen! Go back to the basics as if he was a puppy, he need to learn the work "NO" and make the connection as to what it means. When you say "NO" he should stop what he is doing and look at you for advice. Say it firmly and loud. If your voice is not enough use a color and leash to enforce your words. The more he gets away with is the more he wins and feels in control. For housetraining you either need to have him with you at ALL times in the house...I mean on a leash next to you, or in a crate or outside. He needs to not be allowed to make a mistake inside. If he is attached to you inside, you can see what he is doing and correct him if he even thinks of going potty in the house. Pei's are VERY smart, so smart they easily control their owners.

QUESTION: I am wondering if I can find a purebred Shar Pei that is not inbred and does not have health problems.

Anonymous - 5/25/2011 4:20:07 PM

Respond to Question

we have a shar pei full breed that is 9 month old we r lookimg for a home good for our dog since we cannot have him in our appartment anymore we live in texas.

Anonymous - 6/29/2011 7:00:51 PM

Of course you can! It has nothing to do with inbreeding, it has to do with selective breeding. You can inbreed dogs with no genetic issues and get completely healthy dogs. What you want to look for are parents that are selected for breeding that do not have any problems themselves. Even better all 4 grandparents with no health problems and hopefully longevity. Then you are getting a puppy that will have the highest odds of no problems.

QUESTION: I have an almost 4 month old Sharp Eagle ( shar pei/beagle mix) who is incredibly aggressive. We have him since he was about 2 months old, up to date on all shots and medical care and we work with an in home trainer. He hates handling ( being picked up, being pulled away from something he is interested in or when he first wakes up) and often will growl, snarl and attack with intense biting. Giving him up is not an option he is family and for every bad moment he has there is 50 good ones. He is good with children, other dogs, new people, cars, and travel- he just likes to be the alpha or in control of situations. My question is - any suggestions or techniques on how to help maintain or modify his behaviors? we are open to any and all suggestions. Thanks !

Anonymous - 4/10/2011 8:59:43 PM

Respond to Question

i have raised shar pei dogs since the early 90's and most are friendly and loving although protective of the family members but i have never encountered one that wakes up ill, snarling and biting i would suggest if he is an inside pet maybe make him a bed in the laundry room or in another isolated part of the house and teach people not to touch as most shar pei dont like being touched on the top of the head or by people they dont know other than that i have no idea on how to deal with a sleep head

QUESTION: We just found out our Chinese Shar-Pei dog needs to have an eye lift if thats what it is called. The eye lashes are folding under. Will we have to do this more than once? Will this make him aggressive? I know he will be in pain and we have other dogs, im just scared for him he is only 18 weeks old

Anonymous - 3/15/2011 11:12:58 PM

Respond to Question

EYE TACKS- WHAT is it? Eye tacks are simply stitches that are put on a shar pei's eyes. WHY? To let the dog grow into the skin. Shar pei's have wrinkles even thier eye lids and that means the eye lashs get in the eye and begins to scratch the eye ball creating an ulcer thus losing the eye. How does it work? So an eye tack is simply used to let the dog grow into its skin. DOES it hurt? No. Not really. It will bug the heck out of them. The stiches used are usally the disolve-able type. Just be careful that the dog does not scratch the eye. Hope this helps

Anonymous - 12/5/2011 2:37:12 AM

My shar-pei had 2 eye lifts.

Anonymous - 5/23/2011 11:35:12 PM

Vet can tack back Chinese Shar-Pei lids now. Surgery later. Do not let this go any longer for the lashes wearing on the eye itself will blind the dog!!!

Anonymous - 4/3/2011 10:48:00 PM

Shar-Pei's skulls grow til they are 18 months old, so you need to find a vet who knows Shar-Pei, no vet who does recommends surgery at this age. The most the puppy can need is tacking. Even with tacking, the anaesthesia is the most dangerous thing. Do NOT let them use Ketamine or Telazol. Both will kill a good 10% of the Shar-Pei they are used on, and yes I have lost dogs to both. Domitor and turbugesic are all that should be used, just gas is even batter. Vets love to do surgery and eye tackings on our dogs, think of the money. Be sure YOU can see the eye lashes rolling in. Thanks.

QUESTION: We have a chihuahua and a weiner dog, would a shar-pei be okay in this situation if it is raised with them, and would this situation cause any problems?

Anonymous - 3/4/2011 4:21:25 PM

Respond to Question

It really depends on the dog. Usually when raised together dogs will get along fine. However speak with the breeder if you have other older smaller dogs, you will want to make sure that you get a puppy who is not the dominant type. A good breeder will have observed the puppies and will be able to pair you with one who's personality best fits your family and lifestyle.

bathe with selsun blue shampoo and when you rinse add about one cup of white vinegar to the rinse water this usually works great i have raised shar pei since the early 90's

Anonymous - 5/27/2011 6:33:21 PM

First of all check for flees on your shar pei / shepard mix. If there are none, go to your local feed and seed store and pick up some prolate. Dilute one ounce to a gallon of water. Bath and then dip your pup. Let drip dry. Be sure to scrub dip on problem areas with rag or sponge.
