QUESTION: Hi! I need to know about taping the ears on Chinese Crested. When should it be done? When is it too late? How long does it take to get the ears to stand on their own? What technique is required - is it just fold the ear vertically and encircle with tape? I hope someone will have an answer for me - I'm all ears!

Chinese Cresteds are hypo allergenic so they're great for people with allergies and asthma. Another cool fact about them is that they can jump real high.

QUESTION: I just got my Chinese crested he's 10 months old. He's a rescue pup. He's great with kids and females but not men he shakes and runs around to hide or peek around the corner to watch them. We are working with him but very slow going. My hubby takes his time and talks to him we sit together and I hold him while my hubby pets him.I then put him on his lap and he shakes but after a while he stops.Today he even let hubby pick him up to take him out to go potty. Are they all like that or do you think something might of happen to him.
Anonymous - 9/1/2011 7:22:44 AM
Respond to Question
I think his previous owner was a man that mistreated him,so he probably thinks that all men are bad. This happens to many rescue dogs that have been mistreated. I think you've done a great deed adopting a rescue pup and the way you and your husband are working with him is great. Just keep doing so and don't give up!
Anonymous - 1/17/2012 6:35:42 PM
I rescued a Chinese crested who had similar problems he would run from the men in the house and stuck to me like glue. I found him a home with female only residents.
Anonymous - 1/11/2012 5:08:10 PM
Well, I do believe something may have happened to him, seeing that these are usually not chinese crested traits. It sounds like what your doing now is working. Just keep taking it VERY slowly, let your puppy warm up to being around your husband. I suggest giving your husband treats, and rewarding your puppy everytime he gets even more comfortable with your husband. Have fun with your crested and good luck! Sometimes they can be a handful!:)

QUESTION: When do Chinese Crested's get their teeth in?
Anonymous - 8/11/2011 9:27:48 PM

It is really not a matter of when they GET their teeth, it's a matter of when they are going to LOOSE their teeth, Chinese Crested's loose their teeth a lot. So just be aware of that!!!

Hello,
I use soap with oatmeal in it. (They have regular dog shampoo with oatmeal.) It's good for their sensitive skin. And for sunscreen I like to use the kind for babies since it has the highest SPF.

Also how would i shave her do i shave her how we humans shave ourselves. And what is the best food for them because i hear they gain weight easily.

Respond to Question
Hey everyone with hairless cresteds that break out in comadones, blackheads and pimples.... I finally found that using the bar soap with this EXACT name "Cetaphil Antibacterial Gentke Cleansing Bar", and Thoroughly rinsing with a spritz perhaps of Humilac, helps tremendously,( even in their hair but NOT in their eyes!!!!)
One of my three has part dry part oily skin, she is best off with a bath every 5-6 days.
Up to you to do your own research and follow your own thoughts.

I like using Aveeno hydrosport it comes in a spray. I just put my hand over her eyes a lightly mist. It works really good and doesn't break her out. I also use all human products for her hair I like Sebastian that works.really good I also found a really good lotion the Naked Bee. It has no alcohol, mineral oil or lanolin it smells.really good.and leaves them soft not sticky. I also bought a small rechargeable clipper I like that much better then a razor. it gets a nice close cut without the worry of cutting them. Best advice. don't over use products and I.only use the sunscreen we she out for more then an hour at a time. Treat there skin like you would.yours a little bit of product goes.a long way and I learned the hard way not.to use pet products and don't go cheap. Besides the products last its worth it on the long run. Good luck with your new chinese crested puppy - they are one of the most loving dogs I ever had.

ALL THE PUPPIES COME AND GO AND NOBODY SEEMS INTERESTED IN HIM. THEY WANT $799! Your chinese crested puppy is probably poorly bred and more than likely ill.....puppies are just like all other breeds, cute and chubby. He may have worms, or he may be emaciated from some other source. But he should see a vet.

QUESTION: I am having a serious problem - my soon to be 5 year old chinese crested powderpuff has two major problems - he marks and barks constantly. This is causing tension within my household. Will getting him neutered help either of these problems?? he is otherwise a great dog, I need some serious help, as I cannot bring myself to give him away i love my dog so much...ANY ADVICE IS APPRECIATED..Thank you.
Anonymous - 5/17/2011 8:33:21 AM
Respond to Question
Neutering may help curb your chinese crested's marking behavoirs, but dont expect it to completely solve the problem, he will still need to be trained to not mark in the house. Neutering may make training easier tho.. he will be able to focus better on you, because he will be less driven by his hormones.

Respond to Question
Well, has your Chinese Crested been in the sun? Chinese crested's DO sunburn REALLY easily and that could be your problem! If he does not go in the sun, there could also be a number of other causes. Just make sure you protect their human like skin, just as you would protect your own!:)

I HAVE BEEN WATCHING A CHINESE CRESTED PUPPPY AT A LOCAL PET CENTER. I HAVE 2 ALREADY AND JUST GO TO VISIT WITH HIM BECAUSE HE'S SPENDING HIS LIFE IN THAT CAGE. HE IS HAIRLESS AND 4 MON OLD NOW. HIS SKIN LOOKED TERRIBLE AND I HAVE BEEN TELLING THEM THAT NO ONE WILL BUY HIM AT $799 WITH THAT SKIN. THEY CONSIDER IT A RASH. RED RAISED BUMPS. DON'T SEEM TO ITCH. THEY THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE THE SWEATER THEY HAD ON HIM. aNYHOW, AFTER TRYING VARIOUS THINGS THEY STARTED USING A FOAM THAT I THINK IS A TRIAL THING THAT THEY GOT FROM THE VET. IT HAS SEA SALT IN IT. I ASKED THE GIRL IF IT HAD STEROIDS IN IT BECAUSE HIS SKIN IS LOOKING BEAUTIFUL! SHE SAID NO, BUT IF YOU ARE INTERESTED AND HAVEN'T FOUND A CURE YET I WILL CHECK OUT THE LABEL MYSELF AND GET YOU MORE INFO. HELEN

QUESTION: how long is a female chinese crested in term for having puppies and how long are they in labor for
Anonymous - 4/21/2011 12:12:36 AM
Respond to Question
Dogs are pregnant for 58-63 days. Labor can never be pin pointed on how long they will take. If you are planning on breeding, I would suggest getting books on the subject. Be prepared. Make a whelping kit. Nasal aspirator, dental floss, thermometer, replacement milk, scale, towels.

QUESTION: We bought a 2 1/2 yr female chinese crested. Everything they told me is LIES! She is not socialized (terrified of people, going through doors, jumping off/onto anything, car rides (we are gone to visiting family, parks, car rides, ect.) IS NOT HOUSE BROKE! Crate training isnt working (always been successful before) She goes out but also immediatley goes inside! This could be during feeding, cuddle time, few mins of play time, etc. She is taken out frequently and will still go coming in. I do not know what do do. I do not know if she can be re-trained at this age. I tell her bad/no when she pees and take her out. I praise her when she goes. We keep her in the kennel and take her out for walk, eat and potty runs, but she still will go in her crate. How can you crate train when they go in their bed?! All she does is pee! She doesnt even drink much . I need help from someone who can seriously advise me.
Anonymous - 4/3/2011 12:12:19 PM
Respond to Question
If your chinese crested potties outside and is still pottying in the house shortly after coming back in, I'd suggest a trip to the vet to rule out urinary tract infection. That may also be why she is peeing in the crate.
Anonymous - 5/26/2011 1:13:15 AM
We have a powderpuff that is 13 months old.He was very easly to train. The first day we brought him home , he was going to the door to go out when he had to use the bathroom. We also used bells hanging on the door knob so that we knew he was there if we weren't watching. We later installed a doggie door. He is social on his own terms. He loves to ride and does very well with that.
Anonymous - 4/17/2011 11:12:14 AM
You said your chinese crested goes in her crate? How big is her crate? If it is big enough for her to walk around then you need to put a barrier or get a smaller crate. Its not cruel its just that she wont go in her sleep spot! Try that. Do you use puppy pads? If so take them outside everytime she goes and praise her when she does! But DO NOT use them indoors if you only want her to use it out doors! Eventually she wont need the pads anymore..oh and you can cut them smaller for outside and just gradually make them smaller! Make it a BIG deal when she goes outside! And if she goes inside (take her outside asap!!!) set her down let her finish going then say good dog and praise her!
Anonymous - 4/14/2011 10:50:35 PM
I bought a dog that was about 8 years old that had been in a puppy mill. Was advised that training her would be hard if even possible. She was trained within a week just from the example of our other dog. I try never to scold my dogs. I do encourage and praise them. Also, after going out and doing their "job", they get a small treat when they come back inside. Also keeps it easy to get them to come when you call, treats work wonders. I have heard that putting a dog in a crate makes them think of the crate as their "home" and the rest of the house as "fair game." It almost sounds like your chinese crested was abused by the last owner???

Respond to Question
Hairless gene is a fatal dominate gene. PP have 2 PP genes one from each parent. Hairless have one Hairless gene and one PP gene. If you breed two Hairless you run the risk of having a double Hairless gene & dead puppy. Leave the breeding to those that want to improve the breed and know what they are doing.Unless your dogs have been proven to meet the AKC/UKC breed standards (in the show ring an expensive undertaking) and will improve the breed do not breed them. If you want another dog, there are enough dogs and cats in rescues all over the county, who are being killed on a daily basis for lack of someone to adopt them.If CC is what you want, adopt from a rescue who are doing their best to rescue the overpopulation from the High Kill shelters and puppy mill breeders. Or buy from a reputable breeder if you must, who is breeding to improve the breed and not for profit. We have a PP who is the delight of our family. All of our 4 d and 3 c are rescues.

thank you for Good Advice re breeding my itty bitty gairy hairless, who i have already spayed because she stayed so small, under 6 lbs. My hairless boy is getting neutered in less than a week because he is probably not a good genetic little guy. He would not even know the right posture for the process and to show me he is the big little guy, is peeing on everything, thinking i am sure, that it is the right thing to do. So although every cubic inch of him is an adorable white, some parts will be removed soon.
Thanks to all. PS , to the person whose cresteds are so well pottty trained, breed those dogs! So i can buy one. Just kidding.

I love the chinese crested breed too. But breeding should not be done just to have puppies. Breeding should be left up to the people who breed dogs for quality not quantity. That is how the breed is ruined, poor breeding leads to poor quality puppies and that's how you loose what you love in the breed. If interested in breeding get involved in the dog shows find a breeder willing to work with you. I'm not a breeder I'm just a lover of the breed. There is no profit in proper breeding just the satisfaction of the breed. It's a lot of work time and expense in breeding. Then there's finding homes good breeders research where there dogs are going.
8656gabby - 7/5/2011 9:41:52 AM
You should not breed two hairless cresteds. You develop genes that cause serious problems. Breed a hairless and a powderpuff. Either way, you will get all puff, all hairless or some of each. It's a crapshoot. If you're doing it for money, there are a glut of cresteds on the market and it's hard to even give them away.
Anonymous - 5/29/2011 12:47:20 AM
You "can" breed them.. yes you would still get puffs.
I personally would not breed a female chinese crested that tiny tho. Most breeders I know prefer the female to be at least 8-10 pounds.
Anonymous - 5/26/2011 1:15:16 AM
Yes you can but there's is a much greater risk of birth defects, such as missing teeth and claws.

QUESTION: are Chinese Crested good country dogs?
Anonymous - 11/25/2010 10:39:49 AM
Respond to Question
Chinese Crested's could survive, but I can't promise that they would exactly thrive. These dogs are perfect apartment dogs and they really just want you! The country cannot be to hot or to cold because they can get sunburnt, and because of their hairless skin, can get cold VERY easily!!! :)
Anonymous - 11/1/2011 8:31:33 PM
Depends on what you are wanting out of the chinese crested. I live in a rural area and have a chinese crested. They are not ideal if you want a dog to spend a lot of time outside with, as the skin is prone to problems including sunburn.

QUESTION: Well, I have two questions. I have a 3 yrs old hairless named Pierre. I was wondering. Must he always wear a shirt of some kind at all times, or just when he goes outside? Second, he keeps getting these small pimple-like bumps on the back of his neck and front legs. What are these? and how do I treat them? Thank you.
Anonymous - 9/16/2010 4:54:58 AM
Respond to Question
Clothing optional. We use clothing only when the temps drop and it is obvous that our Hairless dogs are chilly. (puppies we keep warm with area heaters )
Bathing with a gentle soap and facial scrub glove or soft brush can help. Antiseptic spray after bath on back area can help heal pimple. Stay away from oils,or moisturizers that can clog pores. Cresteds can be prone to hormonal acne even after they are grown.
mama5863 - 10/16/2010 2:52:39 PM
AKC Chinese Crested breeder here. Pierre only needs a shirt when it's cold. A good rule of thumb is if YOU are cold, he will be, too.
The bumps you describe are most likely pimples. Just like humans, Cresties can get acne. Sometimes it′s hormones or a reaction to clothing / chemicals in the house, sometimes it's genetic (bad genes lead to major acne problems later in life!)
Almost all acne goes away on its own, but you can help by bathing Pierre 1-3 times a week, using a GENTLE salt scrub meant for humans, & tear-free baby shampoo. If his skin seems dry, can use an oil-free lotion for babies.
I must disagree 100% regarding consumption of bread. While some dogs will have an adverse reaction to certain foods, there is NO definitive scientific proof all Chinese Crested have a sensitivity to bread. In fact, when dogs are ill, many vets serve bland foods (plain bread, rice, or bananas.) Before removing or adding anything to your pup's diet, consult a veterinarian!
almostnakedpups - 10/11/2010 6:02:01 PM
This is Pierre's Dad. I quess the thing about the sweater is. Can I take him outside without it if I put some good sunscreen on? He's never had it off except when I'm putting lotion on him and changing sweater. I think the area around his neck is getting irritated. Thanks for your answers.

I have 5 hairless dogs. And all five of them hardly ever keep the shirts on. after they are warm they pull them off. They all like to snuggle under a blanket on my lap or just on the couch. Most the time the pimples are infected hairs. Just touching them makes them pop. They are pimples just like we get as humans. My husband gives ours a bath almost daily. This helps a lot. Also Don't give them bread of any kind makes the pimples worse. Dilla
