Overview

An intelligent breed, this dog does well in hunting sports. A gentle breed that is very obedience and very eager to please. Alert, lively, and independent, this breed is overall good-natured. The Brittany Spaniel is generally good with children and other pets if socialized properly throughout puppyhood.

Character

The Brittany Spaniel loves water. Described as a very friendly and loyal companion, this dog also does well in a country environment. Originally bred for hunting, this breed has natural protective instincts. This breed is considered a very popular companion dog.

Temperament

Happy and alert, this breed has a great presence. Easy to handle, and affectionate, this breed would make an ideal house pet if given the right care and exercise to keep him happy. This breed requires a gentle, yet somewhat firm hand, as they can be hyperactive.

Care

A relatively light shedding breed, this dog does require regular brushing to keep coat from becoming matted. Bathing once a month is recommended. Some trimming is necessary if to be used for show.

Coat

Silky, feathered beautiful coat is medium length and does not require much maintenance. Colors accepted are Orange and White, Liver and White, Black and White, Liver tri-color, and Black Tri-color.

Training

As this breed is rather hyperactive, they can become bored easily. Consistent training and a firm hand is recommended to keep you and your spaniel happy. This free thinking breed responds well in hunting or retrieving sports and is easy to train.

Activity

A medium sized yard is a must for this rambunctious breed. This breed has plenty of stamina to keep you on your toes and does require regular exercise. Would do best in a home with at least a medium sized yard, and an active owner.

QUESTION: Our 10 week old Brittney has blue eyes. We were told by the breeder that they would change to brown. Is that definite or could they stay blue? They have not changed a bit in 2 weeks.

Respond to Question

If you have a full blooded Britany it's eyes WILL turn to orange (brown). I have owned and bred Brits and Pointers for years.

QUESTION: should my brittany spaniel have a life jacket just in case she gets tired from swimming

Anonymous - 1/23/2012 7:34:03 PM

Respond to Question

Yes!! All dogs will get tired if swimming too long not being able to touch bottom will tire quickly. And if you have the worse happen they fall/jump out of a moving boat the jacket will help you find your dog and keep a other boater from hitting them

QUESTION: My family is considering a Brittany Spaniel. We do have a pet ferret. Is it likely that this type of dog would try to "hunt" the ferret?

Anonymous - 12/4/2011 9:47:39 PM

Respond to Question

He's going to hunt anything that isn't a dog or human, and is smaller than him. Birds, squirrels, cats, hampsters, etc., are triggers of his instinct. In fact it may drive him nuts trying to get the ferrit over time. My Brittany will become obsessed with a bush only because it saw a bird pop out a week earlier. So a ferret within his "home", will surely make for an epic showdown. I guess he could be trained to accept the ferret, but it'll be tough. Their instinct isn't to hunt and KILL the thing, just to spot the animal so that you (the hunter) can finish off the bird, squirrel, etc., he retrieves and gets a pat on the head and some jerky. My point is he's not going to kill the ferret, just chase him around the house almost without control. There in lies the issue and danger (especially to furniture, lamps, etc). They're amazing dogs and I love my boy to death, but that'd be like keeping a crate o' twinkles away from fat kid. It's just mean and not a good fit

QUESTION: I have a 5 year old Brittany Spaniel who is the sweetest, smartest guy in the world, except with other dogs. He seems to be getting worse as he gets older. At the dog park all he wants to do is run so when the other dogs start sniffing him, etc. he growls. He never bites but he growls and then the other dogs start fights with him. Any ideas to train a 5 year old Brittany Spaniel? Also he is absolutely crazy in the car! Wondering if getting him trained as a bird hunter might help with these things...? THanks!

Anonymous - 11/26/2011 6:52:55 PM

Respond to Question

Could be an issue with too many dogs at the same time - try keeping your Brittany with a smaller group of dogs and see what happens. We use a soft crate in the car with our Britt and she loves it!! It keeps them from jumping from seat to seat and can offer some protection in a crash we like the soft crate because they can get air and see out side make sure you get the right size for your Britt Unless your are a hunter and spend a lot of time training andf in the field don't

QUESTION: Are brittanys good around other pets?

Anonymous - 11/19/2011 5:05:17 PM

Respond to Question

QUESTION: I have a 2 year old male brittany. He is hyperactive and runs in and out of house 20 times a day. When he wants to come in from front yard/he jumps up and down till we open the door. He cant gain weight - he is 37lbs and you can feel his ribs. Any medication to slow him down?

Anonymous - 10/27/2011 9:50:25 AM

Respond to Question

I think this is a perfect case of hyperactivity. Basically, your brittany has not had a chance to be active in a way that would prevent this. Consequently, it has not only met, but exceeded your capabilities (or willingness) to excersize it enough to prevent such behavior. If you really loved to run and play but were kept in or around the house all day wouldn't you get a little (or a lot) crazy?

QUESTION: Why do Brittny Spaniels love water?

Anonymous - 10/25/2011 8:55:27 PM

Respond to Question

Dont tell my Brittany that at 10 weeks I couldnt get mine out of the lake and even today at 7 months he makes my Neighbors lab(6 months old)look like a land dog. And they Do SWIM extremly well.

Anonymous - 11/5/2011 11:46:29 AM

Technically, they don't. They're bird dogs that don't typically swim. You're thinking of a retriever breed. If your Brittany loves water, it's just because they're the best dogs ever.

QUESTION: We have had our Brittany for 3 weeks, he is almost 10 weeks old, he nips constantly goes after our kids legs, just wondering if anyone has any tips to help us get this under control! We have tried a squirt bottle and sticking your hand under his tounge but then it seems to make him madder n nip more! He's doing well sleeping n going potty he sits and shakes, I just gotta get this nipped in the but and he would be great

Anonymous - 9/30/2011 8:31:35 PM

Respond to Question

Never, Never, Never use you bare hands to play with your pup any breed, use a toy if they want to grap your hand when you are playing with the pup stop them and give them a toy to play with this way if you need to handle your pup they won't think it is play time and want to nip. we all know it is fun to tussle with the pup I use a thick pair of work gloves when I tussle with my britt she has learned when i get out the gloves it time time tussle with Dad no gloves no tussle.

Anonymous - 1/24/2012 8:51:50 PM

Remember the dog is not a human. You must prove you are the pack leader. What would the mother do? GrrroooowwwwL at him. Your Brittany does not know english.

Anonymous - 12/17/2011 6:25:57 PM

My Brittany does the same thing nips 24/7 teething bones help and the kids running around just get them excited, my advise yell at the kids they understand better then the dog. Mine is 7 months old now and just now started to lay down and relax when he is inside. But I work him making him run for at least 30 mins a day before i even think about letting him inside, but it really does help.

Anonymous - 11/5/2011 11:33:19 AM

Likelihood is that your Brittany pup thinks this is a game. You need to make sure he/she differentiates between chewing and biting his toys and biting human skin. I think it would help a lot to watch this instructional video by Tab, he is very good, I highly recommend him. Hope this helps, good luck with your puppy.

QUESTION: What kind of stimulation does a Brittany need? What kinds of things do you have to make them happy?

Anonymous - 7/6/2011 6:44:39 AM

Respond to Question

We have a large backyard with an electric fence. I've had two Brittanys (one now, one in the past) and neither were good a leash -- we could never keep up! They'd walk so fast that they'd literally be choking themselves. Our present dog has been on it since he was a puppy, so he's very comfortable with it. He takes full advantage, too, running around the two acre property as fast as possible as many times a day as we let him.

Anonymous - 10/14/2011 9:44:37 PM

Brittany's love to explore, I suggest a walk in a park, or a place where it can run freely would be ideal. That seems to please my brittany

Im the same age as you. Brittanys are very loving and obedient. They are good with young children. And very cute too!!!!! I have one and shes 12. Mine has a lot of health problems but someone i know also has a brittany and theirs never had problems. Sometimes the breeder has something to do with the health. Hope this helps! Ps im making a website called brittanyspanielsunleashed.weebly.com

We bought a brittany 3 years ago. We absolutely love her. She is a great companion for our older children and ourselves, she is sweet, smart, gets along great with other dogs. Is very responsive to positive praise and a great watchdog. She loves to cuddle! I'd make certain to look for a responsible breeder but highly recommend the breed.

QUESTION: I have just rescued a Aussie/Brittnay Spaniel mix, 1 yr old male from Tenn., I have one big question to ask, will I ever be able to have him off a leash. He has showed me his strong instinct of smell and sight. I am willing to work hard with him, but my other Aussie is loose all the time and stays on the property. Would love any input. thank you

Anonymous - 6/13/2011 4:07:31 PM

Respond to Question

It is always possible to train a dog to do something, it is the amount of work required that varies. That is why a lot of people say their dogs 'can't' do something, when it is the owner at fault. From my experience with brittanys you will be able to have your off leash, but because that hunting instinct is there, you'll have to realize that the dog may not stay as close, nor automatically come with called. The greatest reward for any bird/game dog is running and hunting, as that is exactly what they were taught to do. I have taught my dogs to respond to a loud pitched whistle (it snaps them out of what I call 'hunting mode') in the field and come closer to me. Remember to keep everything VERY positive - it is what they respond to best. Best of luck!

QUESTION: Please tell me why my 12year old brittany spaniel would start barking in the early hours of the morning and carry on every hour even though I have let him out and he has water, I am at the end of my tether with him, as this is a new thing, will I have to start sleeping on the couch to get a good nights sleep!

Anonymous - 6/7/2011 7:52:15 AM

Respond to Question

Brittanys are bird dogs, and in your area birds may tend to be more active in the early hours. I suggest getting him something fun to chew on during this time - hearing bird noises may be pressuring the dog to feel like they need to get out and go hunt, and do something about all the birds. By giving him something else to chew on, this reaction is ignored, because food is ultimately the most important thing.

QUESTION: How much do Brittany Spaniels cost? In case I save up to get one:-)

Anonymous - 6/6/2011 4:52:21 PM

Respond to Question

It depends on the location. I found a beautiful female Brittany Spaniel puppy from a farmer in WV which is about 2 hours from my house for $200.00. She is now 2 years old a great dog. Very good personallity and no health problems. Good hunting stock. Shop around, you'll find a good dog for a good price.

Anonymous - 8/22/2011 1:59:30 AM

I have seen Brittanys sold from $450 to $1700. It seems that $600 to $850 is common.

gretchen012 - 6/20/2011 9:55:43 PM

For a pure bred Brittany Spaniel, $500 to $800 dollars for a papered puppy with the females being about 100-150 dollars more than the males. Plan on spending a couple hundred more on the vet bill right away. Also if you plan to spay or nueter, another 5-600 dollars.

QUESTION: Why do Brittany Spaniel's shed so much?

Anonymous - 4/21/2011 3:02:41 PM

My Brittany shed more than usual for the breed also. I switched to a higher protine food and it solved the issue. Virtually no shedding now.

Anonymous - 8/22/2011 2:01:55 AM

Brittany Spaniel's do not shed much.

QUESTION: Are Brittany Spaniel's hypoallergenic?

Anonymous - 3/31/2011 11:00:06 AM

Respond to Question

A good vet will tell you there is no such dog, but some have a lot less pet dander. Also, it can depend on their hair.

Anonymous - 2/4/2012 8:14:58 PM

We were told that Brittany Spaniel's are when we got ours. Put to the test, with several very allergic people over the years, the verdict is, some highly allergic have a small reaction. Ie-they can tell they've played with the dog. But normally response is I've never been able to spend this much time this close to a dog before.

QUESTION: I got the runt of the litter of Brittany's. He's 3 months old. How big should he be at this age? he's prob not even 10lbs. still pretty small. Will he be as big as a normal brittany?

Anonymous - 3/18/2011 2:41:35 PM

Respond to Question

My first brittany was also a runt. For a runt, you're right on track. Just be sure that the dog is eating and getting all of the essentials in (food, activities, water, maybe even extra vitamins or meals to assure growth).

QUESTION: Does the Brittany Spaniel breed of dog have a lot of allergy concerns?

Anonymous - 2/21/2011 11:20:52 PM

We had allergy/dry skin issues with our Brittany Spaniel for years in winter. However we lived way north and now are down south, no more issues. Shampooing also made it worse.

QUESTION: What are the health problems of a Brittany Spaniel?

Anonymous - 2/20/2011 10:26:52 PM

Respond to Question

The Brittany Spaniel is prone to ear infections, arthritis, glacoma, and hip desplasia.

Anonymous - 5/30/2011 7:16:50 AM

The benefit to choosing a Brittany(no longer called Brittany Spaniel since 1982 per AKC) is that it typically has far fewer health problems than you would see in other breeds, especially those in the sporting category. Brittanys are not considered a large breed , mainly because they average between 30-40 pounds and their height averages around 171/2 to 201/2 inches (AKC standards), so in the sporting breed they are considered a light boned medium breed (AKC). While health issues are seldom a problem, the type you would see would be Hip Dysplasia, glacoma and spinal paralysis but it should be noted that these ailments are relatively an uncommon problem when considering other breeds. On the whole, Brittanys are hardier than most breeds.

1bandit - 4/6/2011 10:11:04 AM

Mostly hip displasia because the Brittany Spaniel is a larger breed of dog.

QUESTION: Do brittanys shed?

Anonymous - 11/14/2010 11:17:23 AM

Respond to Question

I agree with Bazer, My brittany shed more than she should. On the advice of my VET. I changed to a higher protine diet, now her shedding is very minimal.

Anonymous - 8/22/2011 2:10:01 AM

Yes. Some of my close relatives have 2 brittany spaniels and they do shed mildly. But not so much that you have to clean it every single day.

Anonymous - 3/6/2011 1:20:20 PM

If the Brittany Spaniel is crossed with something like a lab-they will constantly shed. Our pure brits dont shed much but my brit/lab sheds all the time. I also shave her in the winter.

blazer7586 - 2/21/2011 4:04:46 PM

Yes Brittanys shed but they are single coated breed so the shedding is minimal. Constant shedding can be directly related to heath and diet.

QUESTION: What is the life expectancy of a Brittany Spaniel?

Anonymous - 10/20/2010 1:00:52 PM

Respond to Question

My brittany was 16 years and we had to put him down one of the worst days of my life. He even smiled. I miss him always but my daughter has 2 and the male looks just like mine so I get my fix now and then but for sure would love to have another one of my own. I live in Maine and they are hard to come by here. Best dogs ever.
