Boston Terrier Breed Information

Breed Group: Non-Sporting

Weight: 10-25 lbs

Height: 15-17 inches

Color(s): brindle, seal, or black with white markings on muzzle, between eyes, and forechest, and possibly white collar and lower legs

Overview

As their name implies, this breed was developed in Boston, Massachusetts. Originally weighing up to 44 pounds, the Boston Terrier was bred down from the bull and terrier pit-fighting breeds. This breed has the distinction of being the first non-sporting dog to be bred in America.

Character

The Boston Terrier is compact, sturdy, and small but is not delicate or fragile. This breed has a kind and gentle nature and is often referred to as the American Gentleman. They are lively, high-spirited, and playful. This dapper dog is a delightful combination of determination, strength, balance, and gracefulness.

Temperament

Highly intelligent, alert, and enthusiastic, the Boston Terrier is affectionate and loyal. This breed is quite animated and has a lovely sense of humor. They thrive on human interaction and on being an integral part of the family. They do best in a home with children over the age of eight years and are exceedingly good with the elderly. They will generally get along with non-canine pets, although males may fight with other dogs. The Boston Terrier has a very sensitive nature and will be affected either positively or negatively by tone of voice or the home atmosphere and environment.

Care

Regular brushing with a firm bristle brush will minimize loose hair. This breed should be bathed only when absolutely necessary using a mild shampoo. The Boston Terrier has a tendency to drool so frequent wiping of the face is recommended. They eyes and ears need to be checked and cleaned on a regular basis. Boston Terriers are prone to such health issues as breathing difficulties, heart and skin tumors, and eye injuries. They do not adapt well to weather extremes.

Coat

The Boston Terrier has a coat that is fine in texture, short, glossy, and smooth. The color of the coat comes in black with white markings, seal, and brindle. Occasionally the coat will come in brown with white markings. This breed is an average shedder.

Training

The Boston Terrier is eager and quick to learn. They may be difficult to housebreak and the crate training method is recommended. Due to their highly sensitive nature harsh and heavy-handed methods must never be used. This breed responds to praise, fairness, firmness, patience, and consistency.

Activity

Relatively inactive indoors, the Boston Terrier is quite content to just be with the family at all times. However, regular daily exercise is a must to keep this breed fit and in shape. They benefit from and enjoy securely leashed walks, family play sessions, and free play in a safely fenced area. Boston Terriers do well in an apartment, condominium, or city dwelling provided they are given sufficient exercise, attention, and stimulation.

I have my boston for 7yrs now very calm love to snuggle we take 1/2 hr. walks 3 to 4 times a week. maybe your cousin should exercise his dog more to reduce his hyperness

Anonymous - 1/27/2012 8:54:50 PM

I have had Bostons for many years and they are one of the most loving breeds ever. I currently have a two year old male. He loves to play but loves to snuggle more. I have never had a wild and hyper one...actually they are just the opposite.

Anonymous - 1/23/2012 8:22:59 PM

I have had Bostons for over 17 years, and truthfully your cousin doesn't know what he/she is talking about. They do love to play and are wonderful at making fun for the entire family. Like all dogs Bostons need some direction from their owners. If you are clear about what you expect from a Boston you will have a grand pet. Get a book on Bostons best advice I can give.

QUESTION: Do bostons stink really really badly? I want one but dont know if they stink because my dog already has stomach problems so please help!!! Thanks

Anonymous - 12/22/2011 12:04:32 AM

Respond to Question

I have had Bostons for over 17 years. I never had that problem. I feed canned dog food that contains lamb and rice. Years and years ago I believe I read somewhere that lamb and rice was a cure for gas

Anonymous - 1/19/2012 12:46:35 AM

They frequently have really bad gas as they gulp their food. Boston's are known for their farts, actually. Other than that, they are very clean and easy to care for. If you feed a good quality food, it helps. My Bostie doesn't fart much, but he can still clear a room if he gets into something he shouldn't!

QUESTION: I am looking into adopting a boston terrier and i love the breed. but I live in minnesota and winters here are cold. I've heard that Bostons do not do well with very cold weather, and so I was wondering if i do adopt one how to handle when it gets very cold in jan-mid march? I would love to get one but I won't if the cold would make him miserable and there is no way to make winters easier on him

Anonymous - 12/7/2011 5:02:56 PM

Respond to Question

I have a boston and live in Wyoming, during winters it gets pretty cold here. I recommend getting him a warm doggy jacket and boots. They may not like the boots at first but it will help. If you're one of those people who find dressing your dog silly or prissy then you may not want a Boston because its one of the only ways I know of to keep them warm in cold climates. I hope I helped!

LYNCHPETS2012 - 11/27/2011 6:24:28 PM

Respond to Question

Absolutely!!! The boston is extremely smart and easy to train!!! They are great family dogs and are great with kids! Take it from me, a family member of mine works at a pet smart and encounters many different dogs! They do make many noises except for barking, i know it sounds weird but they rarely bark yet they snore, grunt ,snort, and even sometimes are known to have gas problems because of their short muzzles!

QUESTION: Is it normal for my boston to collapse after playing? She gets back up in a few minutes but she just lays there panting until she catches her breath. She's only 8mos. old.

Anonymous - 11/16/2011 7:10:59 PM

Respond to Question

It would be worth asking a vet, because they can have heart issues, but our 8 year old Boston often comes in from playing and just flops down on his side until he cools off and catches his breath...Keep an eye on play time though, particularly in hot weather because this breed doesn't really know when to stop and can overheat easily.

Anonymous - 11/29/2011 1:20:48 PM

That is normal for a Boston.

Anonymous - 11/24/2011 10:04:54 PM

QUESTION: I purchased my Boston Terrier 2 wks. ago. Today she is 2 months old. She plays and bites. I have marks all over my hands and arms! I don't know whether to yell "no" or swat her with a newspaper. Can anyone help?

Anonymous - 11/11/2011 7:03:13 PM

Respond to Question

If she bites, a firm no and walk away will stop it pretty quickly. Boston's love interaction with their people and will be very quick to learn that you stop if she bites hard.

Anonymous - 12/22/2011 11:47:17 AM

Don't swat her, but rather offer her a toy to chew on instead of your hands and arms. Puppies love to chew, and most of them love soft chew toys and rawhide is also good for them. Good luck...Bostons are worth all the effort!

QUESTION: I am interested in getting a Boston terrier for my boys--they are triplet 11 yr. olds. My questions are: how big will a full-grown male get? Female? And also: do they shed?

Anonymous - 11/5/2011 5:33:22 PM

Respond to Question

GREAT DOGS!!! Boston Terriers are perfect for 11 yr olds!! They love family and will range in size from 10 to sometimes even 30 lb, it depends on the parents size! The average weight for a male is around 16-25, females:10-15!! Good luck!!!

Anonymous - 12/15/2011 12:01:17 AM

I am 11 and I LOVE my boston she is a great dog!

Anonymous - 11/24/2011 10:07:12 PM

Boston Terriers are the perfect breed for 11 year old boys. They are the ideal size to go outdoors and play, run, catch a ball, they love water. But they are also small enough to stay indoors, sleep with them at night, sit in the chair, and they even love watching tv. There are many different sizes, ranging from 10-30 pounds. Parents size is a good indicator of the puppies grown weight. They do shed, but hair is very short, so it's not a huge problem. Good luck!

QUESTION: I'm looking for something to help with the black tear stains on my Boston's face and throat. Any suggestions?

Anonymous - 9/28/2011 1:16:10 PM

Respond to Question

There is lots of products available for tearstains. Call Revival (animal products company) 1-800-786-4751. I personally use Angel Eyes. It's a little pricey, but I feel it is worth it. It's going to take several months for the stains to go away, since Angel Eyes doesnt' remove the stains, but rather prevents the new growth from being stained. Good Luck!

QUESTION: I own 5 boston terriers - all are black and white but one. She is what they call a seal( she has a red high light in the sun and I have seen brindle ones). The question is brown/ red - is it a normal color for them?

Anonymous - 9/24/2011 5:14:43 PM

Respond to Question

It is normal. I have a bridle boston terrier (red) very sweet cute even better cuter

Anonymous - 12/21/2011 8:05:09 PM

There are a lot of colors in Bostons. Your dog with red high lights is the true AKC coloring of seal. The red or brown Bostons are also registered as Seal, as are other colors, such as blue, cream, fawn are sometimes registered as Seal. AKC doesn't acknowledge other colors, so that is why most breeders register their unusual colors as Seal.

logcabinpuppies - 11/16/2011 12:49:20 AM

Yes because most dogs have different colors and a boston terrier is one of them. The seal is a rare color to find so it is a normal color.

QUESTION: Are Boston Terriers born without tails or are the cut off at birth?

Anonymous - 9/7/2011 9:31:07 PM

Respond to Question

I would not have let anyone adopt one of my Boston's with that kind of attitude, she doesn't sound very kind. Also, if she has no money how will she be able to pay Vet bills?

Anonymous - 11/18/2011 2:54:04 PM

Boston Terriers normally are born with short tails but there are times they have been born with long tails. I for one have two litters that one litter had 5 puppies 2 with short tails and 3 with long and the other litter there were 6 it was half and half. To be hoenst I had never seen them with long tails until this happened and they are pure breed. Their father is an AKC/CKC brown and white, mother is CKC black/white. But I did not dock their tails as I do not believe in it. I believe if they were meant to have a short tail they would have not been born with a long one. I just wish the person I just sold one to and gave a deal felt the same. She accused me of deceiving her and I cut the price tremdously because she had said that she didn't have the money and she really wanted a dog and the papers didn't mean anything. Now she is going to have the puppies tail docked.

Anonymous - 11/10/2011 6:18:28 PM

The Boston Terrier's Tail is not normally cut off or "docked" at birth. They are born naturally with short stubby tails. Sometimes the tails are short and pointy or short and twisted or curled.

dextertrixie - 9/12/2011 3:10:02 PM

Boston Terriers are born with very short tails at birth that are just long enough to cover their bottom. Occasionally you will see one with a short point shaped tail or a short twisted tail.

QUESTION: I have a boston terrier female that just came into heat. I have a male boston terrier also. The problem is that today she hooked up with the boston terrier. I also have a boxer/cow dog mixed, and she hooked up with him today also(hussey). Will the pups be mixed bred when she has puppies? She has only been hooked up once with the boston terrier and once with the other dog.

Anonymous - 9/4/2011 7:44:11 PM

Respond to Question

It is possible you will have two kinds of puppies in the resulting litter. Some puppies could be born mixed boston/boxer/cow and other puppies may remain boston/boston. It may be difficult to tell which is pure and which are mixed.

dextertrixie - 9/12/2011 3:13:24 PM

The puppies will be mixed breed.

QUESTION: I have boston terrier puppies and would like to know how old they should be till i feed them puppy food. They are three weeks old.

Anonymous - 9/4/2011 2:06:49 PM

Respond to Question

I have a boston puppy that when oreo cookie was 3 weeks old my vet said to get some soft puppy can food to get him 2 times a day until he starts gaining a little weight. Then 6 weeks start with alpo puppy in a bag 3 times a day. My weight 13ozs. was feeding by a vet bottle with baby milk from vet for 6 weeks. I hope this message will help you out.

Anonymous - 2/2/2012 12:01:50 PM

You can try and give them puppy food usually starting at 4 weeks. I give them puppy food mixed with milk sometimes I mix powder milk up and then once they start eating I start mixing water with it until they are eating really good then I give it to them dry.

Anonymous - 11/10/2011 6:25:05 PM

The mom may give signals if she is an attentive type and start avoiding the puppies as the time for them to have puppy food begins. Check the weight of the puppies each day and compare it to the day before. If the puppy stops gaining weight that may mean the mothers milk is no longer sufficient. This happens usually around 4 to 6 weeks.

dextertrixie - 9/12/2011 3:16:22 PM

You may want to try finely crushed dog food mixed with water and see what they do if they eat it is probably time to start weaning.

QUESTION: which one is better a boston t or a french bulldog

Anonymous - 8/22/2011 1:48:23 PM

Respond to Question

BOSTONS!!!!!:) PAWS DOWN!!! HA HA :D

Anonymous - 12/15/2011 12:04:05 AM

I would say a boston terrier because a french bulldog has a lot of health problemes and plus they dont live long to

Anonymous - 10/1/2011 12:42:03 PM

Definitely a Boston! They make wonderful companion dogs.

Anonymous - 9/6/2011 8:06:40 PM

I have considered bringing one or the other into our home. However, after talking to both Boston owners and Frenchie owners it seemed to me that the Bulldogs have more health problems, are higher maintenance, harder to train, and sometimes have issues with temperament. All I can say is do your research! Make sure you the breed is right for you before making the long term investment. There are exceptions to every rule. Talk to the owners of both breeds and do lots of reading about the breeds. The Bostons suit my household better. That doesn't necessarily mean a Frenchy would be out of the question for your household.

QUESTION: I have a 3yr old Boston and would like to get another dog. What other breeds get along well with Bostons?

Anonymous - 8/22/2011 11:27:00 AM

Respond to Question

i have 5 bostons and mine get along with my jack and my other dog. its not the breed your getting but the big thing is how well your dog gets along with new ones he/he meets. and being yours is three a young puppy may not be a good idea might be too active for an older dog

Anonymous - 10/4/2011 9:08:11 PM

i would say a pomeranian or a papillon.

Anonymous - 10/2/2011 11:13:04 AM

I have 2 boston terriers, a boxer, and a german short haired pointer. They all get along very well. My oldest boston terrier is the dominant dog of all 4, but they all get along very well. Just introduce them slowly, and if your boston is aggressive/dominant at all, be sure to choose a more laid back/docile breed to accompany her/him.

Anonymous - 9/22/2011 1:24:03 PM

Boston Terriers would prefer a dog as big or smaller than them. Also, a dog that would submit to them would be best.

Anonymous - 8/13/2011 11:36:31 AM

The Boston Terrier does well with large or small groups of people. A very active household is no problem.

dextertrixie - 9/12/2011 3:19:37 PM

Yes. Boston Terriers are actually very greatly suited for families with children and other pets. Mine was raised with 4 cats and now plays with a 90 lb pit bull. They are also great with kids but can get so excited they accidentaly nip but not to do harm.

QUESTION: can a pure bred boston terrier have a tail?

Anonymous - 8/11/2011 7:25:55 PM

Respond to Question

I have a question on my boston also but to answer yours a boston is typically born with no tail. My questions is I purchased a boston from i think a puppy mill and I have papers that say both parents are sired and my Meko is a pure breed however he has longer hair almost that of a collie but not as long but he is still fuzzy. When he was a puppy he looked like a baby chow. But as he got older he looks like a boston, stands like a boston, has standard markings except his hair is fuzzy and he was born with a defect such as 1 testicle so if you can tell me please feel free.
