Hi I’m a groomer and I love the Bichon. When was the last time he had his anal glands expressed? Most groomers can check them for you and express them if you do not know how. Also are his ears clean and free of hair? If it is not his glands or ears that you are smelling he could have a problem with his skin.

QUESTION: I recently was given a 2 year old male bichon, his family was lost in the alabama storms in april. I just fell in love with him and he has taken over - HE IS THE BOSS. Only one problem, he smells so bad I bathe him probably too much. I have tried every type of pet and people shampoo, but no luck. I know he has royal blood but at this point he smells like a royal goat. Does anyone know why he smells so bad?

Anonymous - 10/30/2011 7:17:29 PM

Respond to Question

Check his ears. Possible ear infection. Smell his ears. There should be no smell. His anal glands should also be expressed. Your groomer can do this. Hope this helps. Bichons should never smell. They are a great dog. RICK

QUESTION: I am the 3rd owner of my beloved 23 month old bichon frise (I had him neutered 6 weeks ago). He is totally not housebroken and defecates all over the house. He seems to know that it is "wrong". I desperately need help in training him. I adopted him in mid August 2011. Please---any suggestions?????? Madeleine G. owner of Taylor.

Anonymous - 10/30/2011 6:05:40 PM

Respond to Question

We adopted a male bichon when he was 10 months old. He was extreamly nervous and scared all the time. Every time we spoke to him he ran under the bed. He also had a tendancy to do his business indoors. We crate trained him for the first year and when we walked him outside we rewarded him with a treat and made a big deal when he popped and tinkled. He loved the attention and slowly but surely has gotten much better. Every know and then he goes inside but believe it or not he jumps inside the tub. Smart little guy:) He's sweat full of enery and I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world....

QUESTION: What are common names for a Bichon?

Anonymous - 8/31/2011 2:50:38 PM

Respond to Question

Pick your own name for your bichon. Watch your dog and his actions may tell you. We have Teddy. We changed his name after a few weeks because he looked fluffy like a polar bear. We have Jasmine "Jazzy) for short but use both. I took that from Aladdin. My grandkids watched cartoons alot. The very common is Casper, marsmelow, snow etc. But I think unique names are best.

Anonymous - 10/31/2011 5:22:38 PM

At 18 months, your bichon has her adult coat, so what she has is what she will have. Because she was the smallest in the litter, she may not have a thick coat. Coats can vary greatly. Using special shampoos may give her more volume.
