Anonymous - 12/30/2011 12:10:25 PM

5-7 months, but do not breed your beagle when her heat hits after having pups. You're supposed to wait at the very least every other heat. To attempt to breed her each heat is harmful to the momma dog as well as the puppies.

QUESTION: We have a 5 month male beagle, are they good with a female master or a male master? thank u
Anonymous - 12/29/2011 5:38:44 PM
Respond to Question
NO breed of dog naturally bonds closer or responds better to one particular sex of person. Some dogs are more nervous of men than of women etc (or vice versa), but this is down to either a lack of socialistation when the dog was a puppy, or in some cases, mistreated of the dog by that sex in the past. Instead, the dog (beagle or otherwise) will almost always bond closeset to and respond best to whoever spends the most time with it. So, the person who feeds, walks, trains the dog etc will usually be their 'favourite' person in the household, regardless of their sex/age etc.
Anonymous - 1/12/2012 7:43:02 AM
My beagle male took commands from me better than he did from his daddy. It seems female dogs in general will bond closer to the male in the household, and boys are more receptive to the women in households. I've had terriers, beagles, ridgebacks, and mystery mutts... Always been like that.

QUESTION: I just adopted a beagle and it seems that she was mistreated and she scared for us to pet her. She seems sad all the time and she just lays around all day even though we encourage her to play with us. Is there anything we can do to make her more active ??
Anonymous - 12/28/2011 7:43:22 PM
Respond to Question
Give your beagle Nutri-Cal for a few days (large amount on your finger or mix in feed). She may be depressed missing her loving home who has spoiled her. Everyone and Everything is new to her. Give Lot's of love and make her feel safe first (Sometimes can take a few days) Then have Fun Playing!!!
Anonymous - 1/4/2012 11:44:47 AM
Contact the rescue group you adopted your beagle from and ask for help. If she was fostered she might have been with other dogs and misses them. Love and time will heal her wounds. Be gentle and very very calm around her. Try food treats that smell, like Bil Jack and get her to follow you around the house by keeping a supply in your pocket.

Anonymous - 1/4/2012 11:49:30 AM
Your beagle is not used to adult males. Be calm but assertive. If you are nervous she will know. If you allow her on the couch, bed or chair, sit next to her. Have your wife sit on her other side. Your wife should gently push her towards you. If she slides back toward your wife, push her back. Stay calm. Once she stays next to you, try to pet her. Keep doing this and she should begin to trust you. Don't act overly excited around her, just be calm and assurtive like you know what you are doing and it is no big thing.

QUESTION: I have a 4 month old beagle that has a little blood in his stool, what should we do? This is our first dog, so not sure if we should take him to the vet. He has had all of his shots.
Anonymous - 12/20/2011 11:27:39 AM
Respond to Question
Any blood in the stool is an EMERGENCY. This happened to my beagle, and he had Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia. Even though I got him to the vet ASAP, and we (vet and I) did everything within our power to save him, we still lost him. It broke both mine and my vets heart.

QUESTION: I've been thinking about getting a beagle pup. I live in a one-bedroom apartment and I go to school 3-5 hours everyday. I would of course walk it at least 3 times a day and make sure it got at least a good run everyday. But I am worried about the noise and if it gets too crazy if it doesn't get enough exercise? Can anybody help me answer if this is a good idea. Thank you :)
Anonymous - 11/28/2011 4:48:44 AM
Respond to Question
Any Beagle would make a fine companion in an apartment. I would suggest you contact your local Beagle's rescue group for suggestions as to the right dog. Unles you plan on being a breeder, don't buy a dog. There are plenty of full bred Beagles ready to be adopted. Beagle's are of average intelligence and are food motivated when training. As all dogs they should be walked. If your dog barks excessivly, use a small can of pennies, and shake it once and say no. Any abrubt noise int interrupting an unwelcomed activity will stop the dog. Never use the dogs name when telling them to stop an activity, only use the name in praise. All pets can learn to manipulate people, it is up to us to be in control. Calm and assertive is what any pet owner should be.
Anonymous - 1/2/2012 12:26:35 PM
I would say a beagle will not be very good in apartments because beagles need alot of space or else he will be very destructive
opencat12345 - 1/1/2012 10:47:24 AM
Beagles will bark ...extensively. they do it for fun, they amuse themselves and warn you at the same time. if you are firm with your beagle you will be able to minimize the barking/howling/non-defined third bark they do. Beagles are "working" better with the opposite sex... at least this is what i understood after 8 years experience and 2 beagles. furthermore, beagles have a character if you cannot take it for a walk he/she will force you. think obedience class, and stick to the program. think what suits you, beagles are very active and need good schedule. this breed it too smart and learns fast but also manipulates people even faster. think what dog suits you

QUESTION: i have a 4 month old beagle, when will they stop chewing on stuff.
Anonymous - 11/24/2011 1:32:09 PM
Respond to Question
I have a 4 month old beagle too and she still chews on things. Make sure you have enough chew toys and rotate them regularly. I've noticed she gets bored of toys fast and then turns to my furniture to chew. I also tried the "no chew" spray and that works 70% of the time. Another thing that I keep hearing is that beagles chew when they haven't gotten enough attention or exercise.
Anonymous - 12/28/2011 1:57:19 PM
When you decide to be his leader. Beagles (i have one) have difficult personality and it is not good first dog. My beagle stopped doing that when i decided to become her leader. I eat, and walk first, and never share food. By doing these your dog learns to wait. the chewing is separation anxiety. be creative, do your preparation to get out of the house and get out for 1 min. Go back in again, Caution do not pet when excited. then out 2 min and repeat. excitement is anxiety in other words for dogs. 1 more thing, friendly advise, these huge eyes that looking at you ready to cry...yeap your beagle plays you. keep it away from woman of any age...if you are woman good luck :P

QUESTION: I have a one yr old Beagle who is very active and gets plenty of exercise. She demands a lot of attention, espcially when I am decide to relax in the evening. I am retired and can give a lot of attention but would like a little rest now and then. I was thinking of getting a second Beagle a little younger for a companion.
Anonymous - 11/23/2011 1:51:14 PM
Respond to Question
Beagles are quite rambunctious. If you buy another beagle, two of them would act weird and crazy in your room.
Juneka - 1/16/2012 11:54:00 AM
I think having two dogs is nice because they play with each other, leaving more time for relaxation. I have just one beagle and I live by myself. But over the summer, when I'm home from school, I live with my parents. They have 2 beagles and the three of them get along great! My beagle chews less when she's with them and gets a lot more exercise! I think it's beneficial to have more than one dog. They learn a lot from each other
Anonymous - 12/28/2011 2:01:04 PM
NO!!! if you do that, you will have double the headache. Dogs (generally) are like children (for ever) when you want to relax at night or noon children have to respect you as you are respecting them and take them out for a walk. same thing with your lovely beagle, put him/her to their relaxation space without any toys to chew and demand your relaxation. remember leaders never shout, confidently take him/her to their bed or space you have for them and tell them ONCE to stay there. i hope that you did not learn your beagle to use the couch because then you will need to claim it back. do not share with your beagle, he/she doesn't see it that way.

QUESTION: WHEN DID BEAGLES FIRST COME TO US
Anonymous - 11/22/2011 2:37:32 PM
Respond to Question
Actually, Beagles are originally from England, where they can still be found in traditional packs (though hunting with hounds is now banned in the UK, so they are supposed to follow scent trails instead of live quarry). The breed has absolutely NOTHING to do with Native Americans or any of the complete rubbish that the previous poster just wrote. They first arrived in the USA (from England) in the 1870's. Fact.
Anonymous - 1/12/2012 7:53:11 AM
Beagles were actually the original dog of the American Indian. They have been in the United States longer than those we now know as Americans, you, me, John Ashcroft and Stevie Wonder. They were once considered holy creatures by the Copper River Athabaskan tribe of the Southwestern United States. Beagles would often be forced to "mate" with the daughters of Chiefs following their first experience with intercourse. The intimacy with the dog was thought to be a good luck charm.

QUESTION: This will be my first ever pup that I am going to own. How do I teach my Beagle to potty and should I put him in a crate when he is asleep or on his bed or just leave him where he was?
Anonymous - 11/7/2011 2:16:47 AM
Respond to Question
To teach my beagle to potty train, I used potty training pads. When he learned how to use it, I took him outside alot. If my beagle did his stuff outside then I give him a treat and rewarded him. Beagles don't like crates because he needs a big space. I just put him on a leash and tie the leash to the weight lifter and put him next to a bed or the sofa
opencat12345 - 1/1/2012 10:35:45 AM
My Beagle is 2 now. I recommend crate training. All night long and when I was at work. I did this for the first year and had very few accidents in the house.

QUESTION: Are Beagles good Guard Dogs?
Anonymous - 11/3/2011 7:39:32 PM
Respond to Question
Beagles like new people or strangers so instead of fighing or howling they will just want to play with.
opencat12345 - 1/1/2012 10:48:23 AM
I say no because beagles tend to follow his/her scent. And they get distracted by smells and sound. So I would say no
opencat12345 - 1/1/2012 10:37:10 AM
yes and no. beagles will wake you up if they think that you are in danger. beagles will also defend you better than most breeds BUT they have a system. Beagles will only defend weaker members from them. for example my beagle is defending my wife but never me.
the plus side to that is the barking they do to warn you which sounds like 100kg mastiff.
when is alone at the house will warn the intruder but when the intruder is in (highly unlikely with that barking) they will become friends.... actually they will probably still your beagle. So, as i said yes and no

My beagles do very well in the snow here in Eastern Oregon, they LOVE it! They do have water proof coats though as their coats take SO LONG to dry. That's more a personal thing.

QUESTION: i have a beagle that is 6 months old, he recently started to pee all over the house even after i take him out, is there wrong with him or is he just going through a phase? I dont know what to do...
Anonymous - 10/28/2011 6:11:29 PM
Respond to Question
Get him neutured! He is not only marking your home he is being very disrespectful to you. Beagles can also be known to mark a LOT! I have 3 rescued beagles from different situations and abuse, neuturing and spaying helped this problem immensely. Also dog doors, so they can come and go as they please, they love to explore yards, particularly when they have trees and shrubs to sniff through and around. Good luck! :)

QUESTION: at what age can beagles have their first litter?
Anonymous - 10/25/2011 5:59:05 PM
Respond to Question
Beagles can physically become pregnant as soon as they have their first season, but this must NEVER be allowed to happen, as it is VERY unethical and could potentially kill the bitch. No bitch, of any breed, should be bred until they are AT LEAST 18 months old (though, actually, between 2 and 2.5 years old is perfect age for a bitch to have her first litter).
Anonymous - 1/12/2012 7:59:58 AM
Sorry, it I offend anyone, but there are too many unwanted and abused pets out there.
Don't breed any dog unless you are a professional breeder. If you have to ask this question, get your dog spay/neutered, you shouldn't breed your dog!
Please leave the breeding to professionals.
Anonymous - 1/2/2012 12:32:10 PM
Beagles can have their 1st litter after their 1st season, but would always recommend they have at LEAST 2 seasons before you breed them!
Anonymous - 12/6/2011 9:54:14 AM
QUESTION: How many times can Beagles have puppies? What is the limit for them?
Anonymous - 10/17/2011 10:58:45 PM
Respond to Question
No bitch should ever be bred more than four time in her life (with three times being a more ethical maximum), and many kennel clubs around the world will actually refuse to register a litter from a bitch who has had more than this. Despite what the previous poster says, it doesn't matter how 'well' a bitch copes with pregnancy, pregnancy takes a HUGE amount out of the bitch, and potentially, shortens her lifespan each time. Anyone breeding more than three litters from the same bitch is an unethical BYB/Puppymill. Full stop.
Anonymous - 1/12/2012 8:05:22 AM
There isn't a set limit, as many litters as a dam can handle while being healthy. For good litters, you can breed your beagle every other heat cycle (if her body permits that.) Of course, one should take her to a vet and make sure she is healthy and strong enough for breeding. Beagles can produce as many as their body allows

QUESTION: I have just purchased a condo. I am trying to figure out which breed of dog will be a good fit for my home. I am interested in a beagle but I am concerned about how much noise they make. Do they bark or howl much?
Anonymous - 10/16/2011 3:39:15 PM
Respond to Question
If the condo is big then yes. Beagles need big space to run around or they will get really destuctive. Beagles are pretty silent but if you have something that is loud then he might be scared and howl at it. Beagle's don't really bark, they just let out a short howl.
opencat12345 - 1/1/2012 10:41:12 AM
We had a beagle for 14 yrs. and he rarely barked. They are such a joy ... we are going to get a rescue beagle as there are so many dogs to be rescued. Maybe it depends on the lifestyle the beagle is growing up in as to the amount he will bark.
Anonymous - 12/31/2011 3:21:37 PM
My beagle is pretty quiet actually. It's all in the training and the dedication of the owner. Of course he barks now and then when he gets really excited, or when he hears a knock at the door, but he is mostly very quiet. He was crate trained right away and wears a shock collar when outside. All he ever needs is a quick vibration to remind him not to howl at the squirrels! Just NEVER leave them out when you leave the house, they can be quite destructive
Anonymous - 12/16/2011 3:03:40 AM
Beagles get attatched to their owners and seem to HOWL and CRY ALOT when leaving. We have a beagle who is 9 months and has bad seperation anxiety .
Anonymous - 11/2/2011 4:04:00 PM
beagles are naturally vocal dogs it is common for them to bark and howl some are noisier than others and some are not very noisy at all but most of them are noisy
Anonymous - 10/30/2011 7:46:49 PM
If you stay with them often and don't leave them unattended it should be fine. I know my beagle doesn't bark or howl much!
